Bands More Insufferable Than Coldplay

I'm tired of this kneejerk shit. In the Sunday Times, Jon Pareles calls Coldplay "the decade's most insufferable band" or something very close to that. I just got the new album today (my local record store put copies out early) and I fuckin' like it. A lot. Their sound has changed just enough from the last record to maintain novelty (for those non-AC/DC-fans who give a fuck about novelty) while still being very recognizably Coldplay, for the vast hordes who like what they do.

So let's have 'em: bands more insufferable than Coldplay. Go.

Dashboard Confessional.
Taking Back Sunday.
System Of A Down.
Superjoint Ritual (okay, mostly just Phil Anselmo).
The Rolling Stones.

I don't find Coldplay particularly sufferable or insufferable, but it was interesting to read that Pareles thinks Coldplay "spawned" Travis, when in fact Travis came first. Isn't this the newspaper of record? Sloppy.

southern lights, Sunday, 5 June 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

dude, jimmy bower in in superjoint ritual. he is my hero. not that i listen to superjoint ritual. and you are right about phil.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 5 June 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Also, to answer the question, U2 is far more insufferable than Coldplay.

southern lights, Sunday, 5 June 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Travis. They were dreadful. Posh twits though they are, Coldplay piss on Travis.

snotty moore, Sunday, 5 June 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

southern lights OTM

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 5 June 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but U2 have had years to become insufferable. I'm probably more insufferable than Coldplay, if less omnipresent.

snotty moore, Sunday, 5 June 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Does Coldplay count?

Travis predated Coldplay, and Embrace DEFINITELY predated Coldplay- they put out their first album, which was not entirely unColdplaylike, in 1998. I think maybe Pareles, who I admire very much as a writer, was trying to suggest that those bands have found new life in the post-Coldplay world where before CP they didn't fare all that well. But factually it is rather sloppy. And while I admire Pareles taking a stand, it's not like Coldplay bashing is exactly going out on a limb. His points were rather obvious and, ahem, Coldplayed out.

Simple Plan
Blink 182
Good Charlotte

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 5 June 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

coldplay are fine. they're completely innocuous. 99 percent of bands are more insufferable than they are.

Coldplay: couldn't get arrested -- but ought to be EXECUTED!!

Aaron A., Sunday, 5 June 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Not insufferable, just innocuous. Which is worse?

Anthony Lombardi (CCPO), Sunday, 5 June 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

insufferable.

to let - flats (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 5 June 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

Blur. But I still love them.

Pareles wrote a rant, not an article, although I applaud the sentiments. Parachutes failed to interest me & I haven't bought any of their albums since then. Mainly because hearing Coldplay fans talk reminds me of hearing DMB fans & I instinctively start to shudder. Santimonious comes to mind....

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 5 June 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

I admire his sentiment, but I don't think he followed through. Coldplay as most insufferable band is maybe a defensible position, but he didn't really defend it, just asserted it.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 5 June 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

Funny, I was discussing this last night. I'd say Keane are more insufferable than Coldplay and Athlete are about as insufferable.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 5 June 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

I think maybe Pareles, who I admire very much as a writer, was trying to suggest that those bands have found new life in the post-Coldplay world where before CP they didn't fare all that well.

But even that ain't true - "The Man Who" already was a Big Smash Hit Record when the first Coldplay rec rolled around.

I'd have much prefered Travis to become the bigger band than Coldplay - better sense of humor, less bathetic, plus Tintin hair is always a good thing (tho "The Invisible Band" really *was* crap.) But yeah, I agree, Coldplay are nothing to get worked up about. And "Apple" is a nice name actually.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 5 June 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Coldplay are not insufferable, just simply boring as hell.
Neat background music, nothing more.

PAPA ROACH

(Also, RATM)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 5 June 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

chris martin gained some respect in my estimation for his performance on jonathan ross on friday, during which he inserted an impromptu impression of the crazy frog "ding-ding-der-ding-der-ding" noise into the middle eight of "speed of sound".

coldplay are less insufferable than they have been in the past, i think, but since they're on the cusp of being Absolutely Fucking Gigantically Enormously Ubiquitously Huge, that may swing back again. Keane have stronger songs than Coldplay, Embrace, Athlete, Snow Patrol, the lot of 'em. Just a shame the singer's funny-looking.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 5 June 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

"I'm tired of this kneejerk shit."

Why is this kneejerk? Those of us who, to put it kindly, just don't get it, have had four years to make the decision. And when I hear the new record, if I find it honestly changing my mind, I promise I'll post here and you'll be the first to know.

4 Non-Blondes

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 5 June 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

Dan OTM, though Chris Martin has yet to redeem himself by writing with Pink and Gwen Stefani.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 5 June 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Keane, Dave Matthews Band, Ashlee Simpson,

True. (I missed where the Papa Roach hate came from! But I'm not surprised by it.)

That's fantastic!

Ian Riese-Moraine forever! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 5 June 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Currently, there are only a very small handful bands in the world that are less insufferable than Coldplay.

Can't get enuff of the precious wit and wisdom of Serj Tankian

Beneath a splash of white light, floppy-fro'd frontman Serj Tankian crooned the song's chorus, "Everybody's going to the party, have a real good time

-- SOADFans, Egypt

It also featured the band's most grating trait, singer Serj Tankian's mile-a-minute shrieks and screams, juxtaposed with an operatic sing-speak

-- SOADFans, Egypt

You can feel lead singer Serj Tankian's brain spinning in irony on the war-questioning track “BYOB” as he sings “Everybody's going to the party

-- The Connecticut Day

But still, singer Serj Tankian and guitarist Daron Malakian — one half of the eclectic metal quartet — fiercely resist...

-- Asbury Park Press

Take System of a Down. They're undoubtedly the first band in recorded history to think of slinging together arias, speed metal beats, bubblegum pop and - oh, yes - Armenian folk tunes.

In the song "Revenga," their triple-timed metal riffs fitfully morph into a kick dance that would wow 'em around the Black Sea,

System delivers its shtick in earnest. That's obvious from their lyrics, which address subjects like the war in Iraq (they don't like it), TV violence (they think it's bad for you)

If System's music often sounds too imbecilic to believe, at least they should be commended [for something not worth reprinting here]...

-- New York Daily News

With his benign smile, tumbling ringlets and air of spiritual calm, Serj Tankian could pass for a New Age healer

-- Ultimate Guitar.com

The band played Irving Plaza on Monday night fresh from its appearance on "Saturday Night Live," where its leader, Serj Tankian, used a four-letter word

-- Akron Beacon Journal

Their frontman Serj Tankian has published books of peace-loving mystical poetry and, before joining the band, was the head of a computer software company. ...

ryan adams

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 5 June 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

The Bright Eyes guy. He's a genius. I read it in my local newspaper.

Devendra Banhart. He took inspiration from a muse found travelling around the world and living out of a dogcart. The New York Times said so.

George Smith, Sunday, 5 June 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Bright Eyes. I like Bright Eyes but Conor is a bigger twat than Chris Martin.

Actually, I don't get all the Chris Martin hate - he's always come across to me as a pretty likeable guy in interviews and shit. Coldplay on the whole are kinda boring but I don't find their music irritating even when its played to death everywhere.

Madonna.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

I can't tell if this thread is basing its choices on the singer/band or the music.

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Roz OTM, Chris Martin seems a decent guy and a pretty funny one - i also find him extremely sexy.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

This Coldplay-liking is like some weird Ebola of the brain.

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

I think Chris Martin's got elephantitis of the ego, but there are far worse characters out there.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I think if Coldplay were anyone else current I would just ignore them because they're crap, but such is their omnipresence and the assumption that as a skinny white English bloke in his early 20s I should like them that I really do despise them. I can't do the "don't listen to them then" because they seem to be everywhere.

However, before this was the case I remember just about hating the Stereophonics more, but particularly Kelly Jones. They luckily are ignorable though.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Coldplay don't irritate me ANYWHERE NEARLY as much as the Black Eyed Peas.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Outkast I would normally think were OK but Andre 3000 is very annoying, especially with "Hey Ya" which you cannot escape from still.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Coldplay don't irritate me ANYWHERE NEARLY as much as the Black Eyed Peas.

Any band with Fergie can only irritate me so much....

PB, Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Audioslave

Dhi, Monday, 6 June 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

It was kind of oddly amusing to me to see the featured article (biggest photo) on the front page of the NY Times website was a take-down of Coldplay. Surely the Times has more important things to write about? The band can't be that hard to ignore, can they? How insufferable can they be if you never pay any attention to them? It works for me.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 6 June 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

Coldplay is like the Elton John of the millenium--that's when they're not being the Human League of the millennium. I don't mind them, and actually like a few songs. What's all the hate about?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 6 June 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

coldplay are so boring they aren't even fun to make fun of. i don't hate them, but....yeah, see, i got nothing. when people bring them up i usually say: "well, i can see why people like them." and i can. i just don't dig their brand of sadsack. i got lots of sadsacks i love though. coldplay just don't do anything for me.

that Times thing was silly. and not funny. which it shoulda been. they shoulda called up klosterman or joe queenan. there mighta been one joke worth reading.
