I have recently bought Os Mutantes' compilation "Everything Is Possible". It was released by Luaka Bop label and it has the title "World Psychedelic Classics 1: Brazil". ¿Can anyone tell me if that series have continued? ¿Is there any World Psych Classics 2, or 3?

Luaka Bop have an excellent and well maintained website as I remember. I've visited it for info on Jim White, cos I love his corny old ass. Si Se are great as well, least my girlf finks so.

i've got World Psych Classics 2 - Inspiration Information by Shuggie Otis - not listened to it enough to form a firm opinion

Jim White is old? I thought he was like 20 something, or 30 something. Then again, maybe he HAS gotten older, his last one with Morcheeba was so much weaker than his first really weird one with Ralph Carney.

Mickey Black Eyes, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There was only one song with Morcheeba. I dunno if I rather Wrong Eyed Jesus (if thats the one you mean) to No Such Place but they're both pretty good.

I have both volumes, and they're both pretty blah. Not bad, mind you, just not compelling enough to make me want to play them again. I'll trade them both away soon.

Os Mutantes and Jim White CDs have the same striped spine pattern. That's not a Luaka Bop corporate motif, is it? Anyway, I just wanted to say I like that song on Wrong Eyed Jesus where Jim sings "I always did pretty good in school", but I wouldn't be surprised if somebody else posted that's the worst cornball piece of dogshit ever. And I haven't been able to get into his new album at all.

No such place was very blah--it smacks of that weird smoothed over non-r&b-but-hop-literate sound that also contaminated David Sylvian's last one and Joe Henry's last one. It's like they all found these weird filtered drum-loops and decided to make polite, gentleman crooner records. I much prefer the rambling oddness of the first-- much akin to Greg Garing's wonderfully odd release way back when. I wonder what happened to him?

"Everything is Possible" is a fantastic compilation. I must get round to buying the Shuggie Otis album too. Luaka Bop is a great label.

Mark Dixon, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't have No Such Place, but Wrong-Eyed Jesus is great, especially the first half-dozen songs or so. I wish the intro to "Burn the River Dry" would go on for ten minutes instead of 45 seconds, it's gorgeous. I'm not normally into music with this particular inflection (country elements, "I've seen trouble" narrative, fairly hi-fi recording), but it's just so good that it wins me over easily. Really nice production, warm and clean without being dead or dull or overly bright.

Phil, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Shuggie album is GRATE. If it had been a new release instead of a reissue, it would have made my Top 20 of the year. And it's 27 years old, even!

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jim White: Wrong eyed jesus pisses over no such place into a cocked hat, but 'God was drunk when he made me' is a great track. Overall the second album suffers from too many producers and too much production.

three years pass...
Has anyone heard the World Psychadelic Classics III? It's a pretty sick comp of West African funk, psych, rock, etc. -- there have been a bunch of comps like that in the wake of the Fela renaissance, but this smokes all of them.

i reviewed it for stylus, and joe tangari reviewed it for pfork. fire at will.

i thought it was excellent, but there were a few things that might've made it a better cross section.

It's very good, and a nice attempt at an all-encompassing West African pop comp, but it could have a better track selection in places. There's a whole lotta great stuff there, and it'd make a strong intro for someone interested in this sorta stuff. I still think Nigeria 70 is probably the single best afro comp so far.

You might like Ghana Soundz I & II -- both are great.

TRG (TRG), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

"the definitive story of ghana in the 70s" i think is one i got with maybe the single greatest track to come out of that time/place 'allah wakbar' by ofo the black company.... sounds like these dudes had a funkadelic record or two...

jack dee, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

hey I saw Vol 3 the Afro stuff on vinyl yesterday. Does anyone know if volume 1 Os Mutantes has been released on vinyl?

eBay Item number: 7358717916 (mookie wilson), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

i pretty much got into afropop b/c i was looking for another afro song that sounded as heavy as "allah wakbarr." never found it, but that was ok because i ended up liking the other stuff a whole lot in its own right.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

adam, i have that Daktaris album if you wanna borrow.

i also have this and it's pretty great.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

adam! ethiopiques 4!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

that Blo comp only has 3 good songs on it.

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Everyone says Ethiopiques 4, but really 3 and 13 are better. VOCALS!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I went crazy this weekend and bought every Mahmoud Ahmed album too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, i think the blo comp is good for at least two thirds - the early psych stuff and then the funky stuff. the disco tracks aren't so hot.

and lemme emphasize the excellence of ethiopiques 9. alemayheu eshete is a golden god.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

That T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo: Kings of Benin Urban Groove is amazing.

TRG (TRG), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Ethipiques 5 is still the one I swear by.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

But no, really, let's talk about Jim White some more.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Somebody upped a song from The Fuzzy Funky Sounds of West Africa that's just killer. It's by Guajira Van. Anybody got more info on that comp/artist?

js (honestengine), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
Js, most of the music on the comp is far better and far more far-out than the Guajira Van track, imo - Sorry Mamba by Porry (?) is crazy, ahem, desert-funk. Possibly.
