What and who is it?
Would How We Used To Live by Saint Etienne count? Or is that not pop enough?

Graef, Sunday, 5 June 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

literally, it is something that is before pop.

Why not: Dr. Buzzard, 'On the Corner'-era Miles, Yoko Ono, Missy Elliott and Timberland, Momus, the Dandy Warhols and about a thousand other things I'll be embarrassed I forgot next time I see this?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 5 June 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Stereolab, Cornelius, The Flaming Lips, Pulp, Stereo Total, My Bloody Valentine (sometimes), Saint Etienne (only occasionally), Art Brut, The Avalanches...all my favourite bands, basically!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 5 June 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Ahhh.

I wonder how old this term is. I first heard it from the DJ Deirdre O'Donoghue, who had a show in the mid-80s on KCRW in LA called SNAP (Saturday Night Avant-Pop). I remember one band she championed as "avant-pop" was The Blue Nile.

Avant pop is pop where funny noises replace tune and melody.

Comstock Carabinieri (nostudium), Monday, 6 June 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

You sure bought a lot of those Crazy Frog CDs, huh.

Negativa, True Believer (You know you love it when I'm dressed in drag) (Barima), Monday, 6 June 2005 07:22 (twenty years ago)

At least Crazy Frog has a recognisable melody, even if it is a 20-year-old one by Harold Faltermeyer.

Comstock Carabinieri (nostudium), Monday, 6 June 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

The Shortwave Set seconded with pizazz.

Xiu Xiu

Avant pop is a dead end because when you run out of the funny noises you have nothing to fall back on, where is if you have melodic gifts you can take your music anywhere, like the new Coldplay album.

Comstock Carabinieri (nostudium), Monday, 6 June 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

Heh heh.

Bronze Age Fox, Eel, Valvola, Mum & Dad, Fab Cushion, Macdonald Duck Eclair, Max Tundra, Micro Mach Machine, Minotaur Shock, Lemon Jelly, Capsule, New Buffalo.

Best umbrella genre ever.
