"I had a really nice Memorial Day. There was a Drag City barbecue at Zach’s & Dan K’s (they live upstairs/downstairs from each other). Whole lotta fun."

"Me and Eric played badminton for awhile too, with Bettina from Thrill Jockey and Liz from Town and Country."

"I was going through a box and ran across a letter I got when I was seventeen, from the late great Quentin Crisp."

"I’m such a bagaholic."

"I went on a pilgrimage to Filene’s this morning but went away disappointed, just couldn’t find anything that spoke to me. "

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 5 June 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

oh, I hate Joanna Newsom.

Edith Frost has some nice songs. I wouldn't say "classic," but she's nice.

babyalive (babyalive), Sunday, 5 June 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

telescopic = the country my bloody valentine = absolute fucking classic

she may not be a young pretty thing like joanna newsom but she can write circles around her.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 5 June 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

that last one, Wonder Wonder, has some great tunes. Classic. Very genuine, nice person also.

Calling Over Time and Demos: classic. Telescopic and Wonder2: only slightly less than classic.

Her website's got a full CD of demos free to download, so everyone can judge the music instead of the blog..

Fflaneur, Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

She has the voice of an angel. An interesting juxtaposition with the noisesome Trux production on Telescopic. I saw her play solo recently, just her and her acoustic guitar. One of the most moving performances I've ever seen.

On her blog Edith does write alot about getting monetary gifts from "Daddy", and buying gadgets with it, that burns abit. But Wonder Wonder is amazing.

tom2, Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Her and Rennie Sparks should do an album together.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Rennie does half the lyrics and the backup vox, Edith handles the music and the other half of the lyrics!

I first saw her at Spaceland several years ago, a show I attended based on a couple of songs she'd done on Bloodshot compilations. It was a great show, so much so that a punk-rock obsessed ex-friend (who was too much of a MAN to listen to THE SLITS!) started going around wearing an Edith Frost t-shirt because, as he put it, "I need to advertise her!"

Her two early EPs, Edith Frost and Ancestors, have some really good songs similar to her Calling Over Time stuff, but recorded like the demos. A couple of them later appeared on one of the Shanti Project compilations.

Edith posted on her site:

"Why are people so mean to me sometimes? What did I ever do to them? Why do they want to tear me apart just because I choose to open my mouth and be who I am instead of being silent on the web? And what does 99% of my stupid blog have to do with my frickin’ music? Nothing. And even if it did, why do they want to pit me against other singers, what the fuck does it matter and isn’t there enough room in this world for two singer-songwriters? Fuck that dickhead. Dammit. Why do I get so upset when I read dumbass shit like this? I shouldn’t let it bother me but it just almost ruined my morning. Grrrrr...!!! "

But, what exactly was so mean about the original post? Perhaps the title "Dud or Dud" was a typo? And the rest are Edith's words herself. Also, it's not suggested that Joanna is better than Edith, just that there should be a "death match".

Admittedly, I too and a "bagaholic".
