Computer music advice please! I just bought reason!

Ok

So i have Cubase SX, and i just bought Reason 3.0, Recycle and the other one (Logic?). I got all three on the cheap.

Now, what else do i need to make my computer able to handle all this recording? I notice when im recording in to cubase there is a delay on recording in (E.g through the moniter i hear the vocal i just sang into the mic about 1-2 seconds after i sing it.) Does this mean i need a new soundcard or what?

And what of those Midi Controller keyboards? Are they any good?

I'm completely clueless on what i need to plug in stuff like my Guitars to the computer as well. If someone could explain this to me it would be incredible

Thanks!

David the Owner to thread NOW for a vulgar, condescending explanation of the concept of "latency"!

Seriously, though, most sequencers have a latency setting in "Preferences" (usually under "advanced" menu or some such) that you can tweak to minimize the delay. This is blind advise, though, because I've never worked with Cubase (just Cakewalk, Logic and Vegas).

Oh i thought you meant latency as in, i had some kind of creative talent that would lie dormant as long as i fiddled with Reason.

Hahahaha

Is your soundcard PCI or USB?

It's like some kind of echo. I turn the moniter function on and say something and 2 seconds later i hear it repeated and then it echos.

Not sure what the hell my soundcard is.

Ok...I opened up a VST instrument in cubase and it has the same delay thing on it. If i work out how to get rid of it then i could record some crazy things.

Found the latency setting. I need a new soundcard i guess.

Check out the m-audio cards. the 2492 is great for the price.

PCI = internal, with a breakout box
USB = external (like most, if not all, M Audio cards)

External sound cards have more latency as a rule, although with today's speeds and Firewire, it's ceasing to be a problem altogether.

Ah, i need a soundcard that i can easily install to my Laptop. That doesn't look possible with that M-audio one, but i could be wrong!?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

it is most certainly possible. i would advise you strongly to get a midi controlling keyboard as well. probably one of the m-audio ones with knobs and/or sliders, if it is within your budget. yesterday i officially divorced myself from reason to now work primarily within ableton live, as i've only recently begun to realize that it is capable of seriously sophisticated compositional elements. of course, when i'm feeling nostalgic and lonely i'll probably take reason back as a mistress.

also depending on what sort of thing you want to do... there are many vst instruments out there that /can/ get crazy sounds, but most are just stupid imitations of existing hardware. i would highly recommend getting reaktor so that you can build your own vst's. no, not max/msp unless you want permanent heart palpitations.

I'm mainly trying to build something i can use to record songs next year when i'm at uni. At the moment i use a digital 8-track but i won't be able to take it with me :(

I'm excited about making more electronic music as well.

you need a card that supports ASIO drivers for low latency audio.

theres lots of options..usb, firewire or pci card. or you could try this on the soundcard you already have.. http://www.asio4all.com
