what will it take them to actually shift some records and be as big as critics want them to be? is it possible?

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Sunday, 5 June 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

they're about as big as they deserve to be.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 5 June 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

what will it take the strokes to really get huge?

Lots and lots of pizza. Also, donuts.

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Sunday, 5 June 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

They could start sounding like Coldplay. That seems to work.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 5 June 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

a dozen or so?

oops, misread the title

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Sunday, 5 June 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

an act of god.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 5 June 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

new wave duds that match their dinky sound ("12:51" was a step in the right direction). singing lessons and LESS pizza for Julian, actually.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I think the Strokes are going to have to shed their too cool for school attitude to get anywhwere. Unless, of course, they want to stay under the radar, which is fine too. But in terms of going global, they'd have to drop a lot of their shtick.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 5 June 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

A miracle

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

jed OTM upthread.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

i thought they were about as big as possible anyway.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

they were pretty big in the U.K.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Critics want them to be big?

Every critic I know wants them shipped of to an island somewhere. Fashion magazines want them big.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

xxxpost

Gear! 100% OTM

rogermexico (rogermexico), Sunday, 5 June 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Were they ever "under the radar"? Certainly not with the last album. They were on more magazine covers than Britney. The secret to Coldplay's success is chix. And while I know several chix who dig the Strokes, it's a way more limited demographic than Chris Martin's.

But yeah, a big swoony ballad would help.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 5 June 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone really think the Strokes are going to do anything other than fade away into VH-1 special in 20 years obscurity?

Also, I want pizza.

Cool Hand Luuke (ex machina), Sunday, 5 June 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't think they've merited a VH1 special yet. They aren't even a one-hit wonder.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 5 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

"Last Nite" is kind of a small-stakes "My Sharona," if you're feeling nice.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

The Strokes brought back exciting, sexy guitar music to the mainstream at a time of Coldplay and Travis. The problem is that they just were not especially great but, in utter desperation, people latched onto them because they were better than everything else around.

Now, of course, you have The Libertines/ Babyshambles, The Killers, The Raveonettes, Kasabian, Razorlight, The Tears etc etc etc etc

There's a lot of great guitar bands around now, with a lot more presence and better songs than The Strokes.

Unless you were in the UNITED FUCKING STATES OF AMERICA - the GREATEST FUCKING COUNTRY in THE FUCKING WORLD where your "British" "boys" "Coldplay" emerged LONG after TEH STROKES and TARVIS.

And where Staind, Linkin' Park and Limp Bizkit still were selling loads of records.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Sunday, 5 June 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

I do remember reading an interview round the time Room on Fire came out in which one of them stated they didn't really wanna be massive if it meant changing what they did. It could have been a lie though. Crafty face saving blighters.

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

I hope they were telling the truth. That they love to make dinky music with guitars and drums instead of keyboards and machines while the singer moans about girls like Eeyore Pop.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

"We have a vision!"

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

My statement was, of course, correct. And it has been as such in music journalism and will continue to be seen as such. The Strokes were as important as Suede were (in the UK) in bringing about a revival of exciting guitar based music which was severely lacking. Julian was the new pin up for NME readers that hadn't had a proper 'idol' since Jarvis.

Music Mick, Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Um. Actually "Yellow" became an mtv/rock-radio hit in the summer of 2001, way before "Last Nite" became anything that fall/the following winter. For some reason unknown to me, "Yellow" evn made it to #3 on the P&J singles list for '01...so see, once upon a time you crits liked Coldplay too.

To answer thread title: nothing will make them huge now, if all that Spin magazine cover-one stroke kissing the other thing didnt work (and seemed like rock-crit jack off material at the time...

the only possible thing that _might_ do the trick is a SEXX TAPE of Drew Barrymore and her stroke leaking to the internet....with their next album serving as the score

Vichitravirya XI, Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Coldplay never had any verve or spunk and widely lambasted (at least in the UK) by the indie contingent and still are. I remember Yellow coming out and myself and my friends wept at the fact there were no fucking worthwhile new bands to go and see and no CDs really worth checking out. We wanted a new explosion of exciting guitar music and The Strokes brought that on for a lot of people. I never worshipped them, they had very few good songs, but when they came out it was a breath of fresh air and led to much better bands...

Music Mick, Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Raise you aspirations, please.

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but who are these better bands exactly?

snotty moore, Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

somebody told me?

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

oh come, on smile like you mean it

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

it's obviously glamorous indie rock 'n roll for Music Mick!

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

I listed them up thread but, yes, I would say that The Libertines were one of the finest bands ever and The Killers have released the best single in a decade (done that thread already) and one of the best LPs of all time. FACT.

Music Mick, Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

...or FICTION?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

50-60 Rocks: FACT.

< 50 Rocks: FICTION.

YOU CAN'T ARGUE WITH SCIENCE!

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

is this C-man again?

Vichitravirya XI, Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

They could start with not turning down offers to play at MTV award shows(which they have). I really do think it is because they dont play the corporate game unlike White Stripes, The Killers and (now) Modest Mouse.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

sorry, I've seen them on TRL. You don't get points for only kissing the left ass cheek.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

I put no value judgement in that. I was just stating what I thought was the reason. I may be wrong, though.

They never made the top 10!

Lovelace (Lovelace), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Room On Fire debuted in the top 10

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

um, I'm talking about trl which you refered to.

rof debuted at number 3 or 4. it was a week when no popular artists released albums and rof sunk waaaaay low the next week anyway. they got a gold album for rof recently.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

oh I had no idea where they placed on TRL, I just remember them hyping it around there - may have just been another MTV show, I just know I saw them tell me you're watching MTV in a non-120 minutes capacity.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Coldplay never had any verve or spunk

The existence of Apple Martin disproves that theory surely.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

...And they surely had (as in pwned) Verve

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

The only thing worse than The Strokes is this thread.

cdwill, Monday, 6 June 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

Julian was the new pin up for NME readers that hadn't had a proper 'idol' since Jarvis.

They should've kept Jarvis, for real. Imagine how awesome the world would be if all the stoic indie kids listened to Pulp.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Monday, 6 June 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

does snow patrol sell more records than the strokes cause they clearly are going for the "hey we sound just like coldplay" niche.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 6 June 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

They need to change their name for that one word effect. snowpatrol sounds better than atherleet already.

snotty moore, Monday, 6 June 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but who are these better bands exactly?

Oh, just a bunch of tuneless MC5/Stooges copycats who cannot play nor sing nor write good songs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 6 June 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

Well, that would be fine, but distinctly unexciting names like Razorlight (the Boomtown Rats de nos jours) and Kasabian (the new EMF) were mentioned further up the thread.

snotty moore, Monday, 6 June 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

Viagra

Kasabian (the new EMF)

This is totally unfair.

EMF had at least 1 memorable song.

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Monday, 6 June 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

Coldplay never had any verve or spunk and widely lambasted (at least in the UK) by the indie contingent and still are.

Fuck british indie kids up the ass!

The Strokes = past their peak, and it wasn't that high a peak anyway.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 6 June 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

I always through Kasbian were kind of like EMF if they sounded an indie band and played guitars!!!!
