What do you think will happen if Bono dies?

What kind of thing do you think people will do when this happens?

That One Guy (That One Guy), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

I'll have to get the aliases ready.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

...oh man. Excellent question.

giboyeux (skowly), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Which U2 song is going to get the inevitable rerelease and eight week stay at #1?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

"Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

i'm confused as to what makes this an excellent question, but i believe the rolling stone front page copy will be "one man come in the name of love, one man come and go" and the inevitable rerelease will be "pride (in the name of love)."

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

silly rabbits... the rerelease with be "a day without me"

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Hi, Posted this topic in my brothers name again (sorry chris).

I think the song they'll play is "Where the Streets Have No Name"

All the world leaders will be at his funeral.

There will be a Bono Day in Ireland (probably on the day he was born).

And He will be buried with all his sunglasses and leather jackets.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I'd wait three days just in case and then celebrate.

from What would different rock stars do if they found out they had six months to live?:

IMAGINE THE GRAMMY TRIBUTES! Compare the fame of Joe Strummer to Bono's and remember how over the top Strummer's was. It's highly possible that the entire audience would sing "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" while Bono cries IN PURPLE SUNGLASSES with an all-star band (including Sting, who would let the Edge's hall of fame crack slip in the name of a greater cause) jamming behind him. THE HUGGING DEAR GOD ALL THE HUGGING.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

u2 may or may not break up

a banana (alanbanana), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

replace him with Ian McCullough!

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

or however you spell his name. Mr. Funnyhair or whatever.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

John Lennon will rise from the dead and smite Ned & Anthony

m coleman (lovebug starski), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

I agree with M Coleman

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

ZOMBIE BONO

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Interestingly enough, Bono strikes me as a guy who will leave behind almost no unreleased demos or other posthumous-release fodder.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Well I think they're releasing the unreleased stuff on tha Complete U2 box set that's going to come out soon. That's probably going to be good.

But on the Death thing again.

The Grammys that year is just going to be "The Bono Tribute Show (Including some awards)"

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

"of course Jim Sheridan, my wife, Harvey Weinsten, Simon Pegg - you WERE the Edge and as every singer needs a good sideman, this is yours as much as mine. More than anyone I would like to thank Bono, for if he had not died I would not have gotten to celebrate his life and win this award. Thank you, all."

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

The sunglasses should be on the Oscar as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

methinks there's no way he's winning that oscar unless he finds himself a bigger pair of shades.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

it would be cool if everyone at the funeral had their own bono glasses on.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Done.

They'll elect a new one. Or so Bono would like to think.

Chris Martin will slip on the shades and cackle quietly to himself.

elwisty (elwisty), Monday, 6 June 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

would it be like the end of the Godfather? with Gwenyth watching from the hallway as some A&R men and Paul McGuiness close the door on her?

miccio (miccio), Monday, 6 June 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Except with a cut over to ILM which will be rendered like the final shot of The Empire Strikes Back....

endless.. AND BONO HAS LEFT THE BUILKDING jokes.

j-x, Monday, 6 June 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

Rolling Stone cover - check.
Rerelease of "Where the Streets Have No Name" - check, but it won't make a difference which song it is because most rock/adult contemporary (or whatever the fuck it's called) will play U2 all fucking day anyway.
Elton John rerecords "Candle in the Wind" and dedicates it to Bono - check.
Time's Man of the Year - check.
Some ridiculous campaign to canonize him - check.
Coldplay covers at least one U2 song (possibly a medley) at that year's Grammys - check.
Bono Day in Ireland - question mark. I do know that it would be on May 10th, because it's my birthday as well.
Two months after his death, musicians who have always gone "against the grain" come out saying that U2 was trash and Bono was a jerk (I believe some years ago Damon Albarn actually did criticize his charitable posturing) - check.
Five years after his death, the Edge reveals their torrid love affair - check.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 6 June 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

You speak as if this isn't already the case.

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 6 June 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

Bono will probably survive Elton John. He is older, and there is no way one would expact that such a straight edge person as Bono will not become an old man before he dies.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 6 June 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

With Or Without You. Has to be.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 6 June 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

When Bono dies he will be greatly mourned worldwide and remembered as the greatest rock artist of all time, because he changed the world and not just his vest. No one has ever done rock music as better as The Joshua Trees. Fact.

Comstock Carabinieri (nostudium), Monday, 6 June 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

"I'd wait three days just in case and then celebrate."

Brilliant!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 6 June 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

I liked Achtung Baby better than The Joshua Tree.

That One Guy (That One Guy), Monday, 6 June 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

I think the song they'll play is "Where the Streets Have No Name"
"Where the Streets Have Propane (Epoch-calypse Mix)"

nine years pass...

Bono might never be able to play guitar again after a motorcycle accident in November.

In his A to Z of 2014, a round-up of his year posted on U2’s website, Bono writes: “Recovery has been more difficult than I thought…”

“As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again. The band have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilization are depending on this.”

Bono started out playing guitar for the band, but now plays the instrument for U2 only rarely.

I was going to get in a lazy 'did he ever play guitar before the accident?' zing, but he beat me to it.

You are swimming in spaghetti. Without a paddle. (snoball), Friday, 2 January 2015 12:58 (eleven years ago)

I was in a band rehearsal when our guitarist decided he'd like to try my guitar, so I said OK. He then did a note (and sound) perfect of "One", I was like "damn! " I mean it's not my favourite or anything, but he was good.

Later I saw a live vid where Bono played the guitar and sung it, and it was the same make/model/etc of guitar. So, I didn't feel so bad then.

Kinda poetic that the one song he used to don a guitar for in the early days was 'I Fall Down'.
