I just got me a twenty disc Boredoms collection... where do I start?

Seeing them live popped a blood vessel in my skull, so now I'm ready to drink the Koolaid. Loved 'Vision Creation Newsun' and 'Super AE', but now the floodgates open; a friend is lending me her Boredoms/Boredoms connected shelf o' music. Here's the collection:

Superroots 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8
EYE- 48 song short EP
Soul Discharge
boretronix 2
OOIOO - Green and Gold
psychobaba
psychobaba: on the roof of kedar lounge
The Hanatarash 4
EYE: Planetary Natural Love Gas Webbin' 1999999
DJ Carhouse and MC Hellshit Live at Disobay EP
Z Rock Hawaii
Pop Tatari
Vision Creation Newsun Bonus Disc
Pipeline: 24 Smash Hits By 24 Puzzle Punk Bands
Budub: Puzzle Punks
Super GO!
EYE: DJ Live in Japan 1-25-01

The owner is going to help walk me through and show me around but I thought I'd front and ask if anyone here has info or suggestions. Also, Super Roots 4+5 worth hunting down? Play nice and I'll YSI tracks. Help?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

one of the super roots doesn't actually exist. i think it has something to do with a number in japan being the equivalent of our 13.

anyway:

Superroots 7, 8
EYE: Planetary Natural Love Gas Webbin' 1999999
Pop Tatari

and then the rest.

*plays nice*

I'm still a Boredoms noob, but am interested in what you think of these.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

put em on teh bYrd, yoooo

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Good lord, I am impressed. I only have about half of these.

EYE: Planetary Natural Love Gas Webbin' 199999

I must ask after this. More info?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

that's his DJ mix or remix set, right? I remember Douglas Wolk loving that one, too. I've never come across it.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

i paid something ridiculous like $30 for it back in 2001, which was too much, but it's a good record.

strng hlkngtn, Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Wow. I only have Pop Tatari, and I find it to be a lot to listen to at once. That's a good album too.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Dj Pica Pica Pica is amazing! How I which I could have a copy of these CDs!

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

I'll be getting in the pool shortly and I'll use this thread as a place to post reactions to tracks and the occasional YSI. I'll likely start with the DJ EYE disc, so keep an eye (HA!) out for a cut or two here, shortly.

Incidentally, on the holy shit tip: according to the liners, the Z-Rock Hawaii is a collabo with the Boredoms and Ween. First time I've heard of this; is their working together a common knowledge thing that I missed?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

The Japanese equivalent of 13 is 4, if a couple semesters of freshman Japanese serve me correctly.

Telephonething, Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

OTM Telephonething. There is no Super Roots 4.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Monday, 6 June 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

these are great imo:
Superroots 6
OOIOO - Green and Gold
The Hanatarash 4
EYE: Planetary Natural Love Gas Webbin' 1999999
Pipeline: 24 Smash Hits By 24 Puzzle Punk Bands
Budub: Puzzle Punks

the collab. w/ Ween is fairly well-known and pretty entertaining. Pop Tatari and Soul Discharge are from their older jump-cut ADD spazz rock phase, which i'm not really into anymore, except for Chocolate Synthesizer (which she apparently doesn't own?) The rest of the stuff on the list are things I haven't heard, but are probably good.

Amon (eman), Monday, 6 June 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Where the hell is Chocolate Synthesizer?! Listen to that one first.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 6 June 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

I love a lot of those, but probably love Soul Discharge most, just for total out-in-its-own-territory-ness.

And you've already got Super Roots 5. (Hint: the way you count to five in Japanese is "ichi, ni, san, shi, GO!!!!!") Also, before (or after) you hear Super Roots 7, you might want to lend an ear to the Mekons' "Where Were You," which they thank for giving them the riff.

There are two different MC Hellshit & DJ Carhouse records, a 3" and a 5". One is called "Live!," and the other's called "Live!!" I forget which is which.

The 48-songs thing is credited to Destroy 2, and is... really just a joke, but a pretty good joke (read the track listing). I believe when Yoshimi got married, they played a final gig as Congratulate 2.

Agreed that Chocolate Synthesizer is essential. "ACIIIEEEED!" "POLITZE!"

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 6 June 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

Here's the real explanation of the skip from Super Roots 3 to Super Roots 5:

There is no Super Roots 4 due to copyright problems (or so they attribute to the record company), not because of the superstition many Japanese people have towards the number 4 (one of the ways it is said, "shi," also sounds like their word for "death").

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

The amount of purposeful obtuseness displayed here is line of funny. That live DJ set sucks kind of: I found several way better ones via persistent soulseeking. I will torrent some of those eventually. Gold & Green is among the best ooiøo. Omoide Hatoba and Rovo are other worthwhile side projects. I saw Sei'ichi last weekend with the Rovo violinist. Special guest vocalist was Miho from Cibo Mato! Boy, cell phone typing sucks!

Jw, Monday, 6 June 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Is that why there is two ways of saying four? - I always thought it had something to do with the Chinese language influence/overlap.

Super roots 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8
1: Kind of similar to Pop Tatari, but slightly sparser. not terribly essential
2: same story (only available w/original japanese edn of Choc Synth)
3: 30 mins hardcore track. supposed to be trance, but IMO not that interesting except in theory, and as bridge to late period Boredoms sound
6: ambient/beat songs. pretty cool, kind of a sickly sound, and very distinct in Boredoms catalog
7: Mekons cover turned into epic motorik groove. great
8: cover of Japanese cartoon theme. very short, not essential, but good tropical groove Boredoms

Soul Discharge
early Boredoms sound. splice punk, cut up rock, post modern experimental rock, whatever. messy, loud, fast, jagged - what they used to be known for

OOIOO - Green and Gold
the best OOIOO

psychobaba: on the roof of kedar lounge
Psychedelic-tropical dance music. feat Yoshimi and Atari from Boredoms. good

The Hanatarash 4
Eye solo. Pretty messy, cut-up collage. Not the best Hanatarash, but you'll have a good idea of how chaotic Eye can be

EYE: Planetary Natural Love Gas Webbin' 1999999
Great DJ mix by Eye. This is a must-own for Boredoms fans, especially those who love the VCN period stuff

DJ Carhouse and MC Hellshit Live at Disobay EP
I've never thought this was very good. Loud, brash, but kind of old-hat when you hear them enough.

Pop Tatari
my fave of the early Boredoms. Sabbath+hardcore+Zorn+hip hop=******

Vision Creation Newsun Bonus Disc
Good. features lengthy live track that sort of reminds me of Vooredoms

Hi dere. SR six was recorded with the entire band lying on their backs in the complete dark. I think of it as bizarro VCN.

Jw, Monday, 6 June 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Damn SR6 is good. I hadn't payed much attention to it before.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 6 June 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Super Roots 5 is also good. I reccomend those two for bugging out in a k hole with headphones on. I would really like to wear a survival suit and listen to SR 5 in a blizzard tripping my ass off.

Wait that's three years ago. Sounds about right.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

my first boredoms was rebore 1, 2 and 3 (unkle, ken ishii and dj krush mixes of the back catalog) which i bought all in one go. still my favorite way to ingest boredoms.
