On July 27, the White Stripes will turn in another thrilling new album, "Get Behind Me Stan" (Third Man/V2/BMG). Completing the job of dismantling the band's goofy mythology, it will create a new replacement mythology of reverence for the retro by being cut on a wax cylinder. It's such an unexpected development that it may change the way people hear all its predecessors. And that's just a start. The album might just change the way people hear lots of other bands, too, inspiring a clamor for wax cylinder-recorded analog product.

In an interview from Srebinica, Jack White revealed the moment when the idea for recording "Get Behind Me Stan" on wax cylinder hit him.

"I was driving along in my supercharged antique car, the one that sounds like a jet roaring down the highway, with a picture of Rita Hayworth sitting on the dashboard," he said.

"And it came to me, a 'Eureka' moment! Rita Hayworth was everything to me, the crystallization of all my conceptual work, and she probably listened to her favorite music on wax cylinders."

Will Stan himself provide me with a copy?

It's my impression there will be special promotional tour featuring Stan. There will be surprises like Stan signing the cardboard box containing the wax cylinder player. Economies in nation's reduced to penury and slave labor make it cheap to make the players, 25 cents a pop in Indonesia, for instance.

Stan will also raffle off a large number of the cylinders, each one containing a ticket to an invitation only concert for which the Stripes will play the album live once and only once. The mobile facility will be out back to burn on demand CDs for those lucky to be in attendance.

i was listening to some last year. maria's great aunt still plays her edison cylinders. it's like listening to people on mars. if mars were a freaky ghost planet transmitting the unearthly sounds of turn of the century america.

Will Stan himself provide me with a copy?

We waited in the blistering cold for you, four hours and you just said, "No digital."

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

I was waiting for that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 6 June 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

(Of course these days Eminem would be all, "Um, do you still like me? Please?")

I went to see Ray Price at the Bottom Line a few years back, his first NY appearance since 1962, and it was like a time machine because he had this weird Frank-and-Sammy race-baiting relationship with his Mexican bandleader. There was one point, scripted no doubt, when the bandleader got back his own, when he said "Do you remember when we recorded our first single? [Agreement is voiced.] And do you remember the name of the engineer on that session? Thomas Edison."

I cram to understand you, Stan.

"I was driving along in my supercharged antique car, the one that sounds like a jet roaring down the highway, with a picture of Rita Hayworth sitting on the dashboard," he said.

Well well well, Karen Elson will surely want to know more about his Rita obsession.

Hey!!!! People will finally be able to set the "Media Type" ID3v2 tag on their MP3s to Wax Cylinder!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's another great day for XML-based metadata embedded in digital media!!!!!!

Well well well, Karen Elson will surely want to know more about his Rita obsession.

Stan would be happy to get behind her if things fall to pieces.

Harry Klam, Monday, 6 June 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Man, that's so stale. If they were cool like me, they'd only release their music on a Phonautograph recording, making the soundwaves visble only. Who needs to hear music anyway?!

Love,
Leon Scot(t)
