Cyndi Lauper - "True Colors" C/D?

Hoping to find something redeemable, I whipped out my cassette copy to hear on my way to work. The two big singles ("Change of Heart" and the title song) are crappier than I remember, there's a dreadful Marvin Gaye cover, and some overproduced filler. "Maybe He'll Know" is the only song to evoke the charm of the debut.

Will anyone defend this debacle?

I think its sweet she'd always have her goofy boyfriend in the vids.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 6 June 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

To remind her of the goofiness she lost. She should have kept Captain Lou by her side.

I can do without "Change of Heart," personally, but the title song needs to exist, or else the terrorists will have won.

The Mad Puffin, Monday, 6 June 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

The song somehow worked better as a Kodak commercial.

My wife and her sister will be around to kick you at about sevenish.

You know, the title track was number one in the States on the day I was born, and yet I've never heard it.

Well, I don't remember ever hearing it, although apparently it was playing in the hospital cafeteria after I was born.

Missy Maerz just informed me a few weeks ago that it was about coming out. But then, it took me a solid year to figure out that "She Bop" was about self-pleasuring...

"Like a wainbow..."

This may seem silly but I like the Aztec Camera cover of this.

T/S: "True Colors" versus "Time After Time".

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 6 June 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

I saw the thread title and was coming to say classic just for Roddy Frame's version. Which means, I think, Cyndi Lauper is a bit on the dud side, but the song itself is lovely.

Impossible! the song was a Kodak commercial jingle for like 10 years!

Time After Time eats True Color's lunch. but I still kinda like True Colors.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Cyndi Lauper's voice + Kate Bush's voice = The Knife

Seb (Seb), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

I like the song, never heard the album. Classic as a gay rights anthem, if nothing else.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

"gay rights anthem"? I had no idea. I've never heard it in gay bars. If Cyndi showed her true colors with this song, it's no wonder I'd prefer the "you" stayed closeted.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

I don't know about gay bars, but it was all over the place in the late '80s/early '90s along with rainbow flags and "Silence = Death" sidewalk stencils.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 6 June 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Gay rights anthem doesn't necessarily mean 'It's Raining Men', Alfred ;)

She wrote it for a close friend who was battling with AIDS. She's been a pretty vocal supporter of gay rights since her sister came out, but she always seemed to move in those circles anyway, being the free-thinking gal she is. I loved the song even before I knew the story behind it, but
it does change the way you hear the song. I don't have this album, but I
have a few of her others and I think she kicks ass.

"true colours "is brilliant 11/10 (phil collins cover is really bad).
"change of heart" is good but not great.7/10
"maybe he'll know" is brilliant and shoulda been single.9/10
"The Faraway Nearby " weird and wonderful 6/10
"911 " takes a few listens 5/10
"One Track Mind " another sex song, nice chorus 5/10.
nothing else .

lyndi cauper, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

Alfred, "Maybe He'll Know" is a remake of a tune by her pre-"Girls Just Want to Have Fun" band, Blue Angel.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

The song=Classic
The album=dud

Gay rights anthem doesn't necessarily mean 'It's Raining Men', Alfred ;)

Oh, I know. But the song always seemed mawkish....I'm in the minority.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

twelve years pass...

Still in the minority, I presume.
