As far as Wilmington goes, I'd definitely recommend other cities in NC over it if you're thinking about moving to the region. The beach is the only really great thing about it. Without that, it's pretty much an average small/medium size southern car-based city. Best places to live in NC, in my opinion, are Asheville and Chapel Hill/Carrboro, probably Greensboro coming in third, and then Wilmington. Anywhere else isn't worth living in for any extended amount of time.
