charltonlido, I'm not actually from Wilmington, but I've lived in NC my entire life. Growing up in NC, it's pretty much mandatory to visit the beaches, often times at Wilmington, pretty often, so I've spent a decent amount of time there, and it's just a few hours from where I live now. I'll probably be going there a lot more in the near future since my sister is moving there this month.

As far as Wilmington goes, I'd definitely recommend other cities in NC over it if you're thinking about moving to the region. The beach is the only really great thing about it. Without that, it's pretty much an average small/medium size southern car-based city. Best places to live in NC, in my opinion, are Asheville and Chapel Hill/Carrboro, probably Greensboro coming in third, and then Wilmington. Anywhere else isn't worth living in for any extended amount of time.
