I dunno, should we?

I'd go if the kids could get in too, but it seems to be "over 18's only".

Not fussed about the bands really.....

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

it's free in philadelphia -- go see jay-z and fiddy!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

We saw fiddy at Reading last year. It was famous.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

you reading people threw bottles at him -- that wasn't nice!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

It wasn't us. (i.e. Me, Dawn, Amber or Alice)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I'm just being the most frightful old Mr. Cynicy-Trousers, but I can't help but feel that if Mr. Geldof and Mr. Ure seriously wanted to encourage "the kids" to rise up and seize the opportunity to force the need for some major global changes onto the political agendas of the most powerful countries on the planet; then they really should have done so 21 years ago when they had the opportunity.

I'm afraid I'm not at all convinced that anything like enough of "the kids" care enough these days to get involved in anything like this at a level much more profound than it providing an excuse for them to party - and most of the people who actually do care, have too many commitments with kids of their own.

Of course it should go without saying that I really, really, really hope I'm proved wrong.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

i just wanna see fiddy, jay-z, and stevie wonder for free.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I heard them talking on the TV today and saying there would only be one stage at the London event... I presume this means a fair few collaborative performances or some bloody short sets.

Adam Park, Monday, 6 June 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

The Sun are running a campaign to put The Quo on the bill

Michael B, Monday, 6 June 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Radio 1 (Colin and Edith anyway) were/are doing the same thing...

I dunno, 1 song and off, from the looks of things.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

IIRC last time they had a revolving stage so as soon as one act finished, they just had to turn the stage 'round a bit and all the next band's kit was there set up ready and waiting.

(x-post)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

The Quo thing is pathetic. They should be campaigning for Orchestra Baobab.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

There's something about the politics of this that makes me feel a little queasy, surely there's a simplification of the situation going on, I mean dropping the debt won't solve all the problems of a continent will it? Seeing Claire Short describe it as "trivialising" and Midge Ure's best reply being something along the lines of "well she can't write or play songs", makes me a little aprehensive. What I don't get is how going to see a bunch of phenomenally popular bands means people are signing up to the Geldof doctrine; surely the majority will be going to see Coldplay rather than out of deep sympathy for Africa.

elwisty (elwisty), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

mark - Go to Sail 8 instead! Whaddaya mean you don't own a boat? Every family owns a boat, don't they?

(seriously, has Geldof finally lost the plot entirely?)

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Very disappointed that Muse, The Killers and Razorlight are taking part in this fiasco. Expected better.

The rest of them are publicity hungry, overpaid, undertalented wankers anyway so I'm not shocked in the slightest.

I'm sure Madonna's bank account could wipe out Africa's debt anyway. Which makes this all, uhm, a bit silly really.

Music Mick, Monday, 6 June 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

The Queen is still richer than Madonna right?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Shouldn't we judge people by the company they keep?

Anyway, if people want to go, fine, who are we to psychoanalyze their motives? I shall enjoy the day as I did the first Live Aid: by staying as far away from a TV set as possible.

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

this line up is the driest lineup for an event like this ever. who cares about live aid when we have all the other festivals anyway? obv those arent free, but this lineup just looks dull and corporate sponsored. i suspect about as much interest on behalf of these artists for the cause as i dunno, abi titmuss has for a bra.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

i cant wait for philadelphia to begin rioting.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

yes!

the leglo (the leglo), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

How will you tell?

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

"The Queen is still richer than Madonna right?"

I'm not sure to be honest - however, with Freddy dead and the new lead singer and everything I am not sure why you think Queen would need to be brought back for the 2005 event.

Music Mick, Monday, 6 June 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

"Shouldn't we judge people by the company they keep?"

Does that include the company we keep in cyberspace?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Yes, God help us. I was just questioning Mick's logic. I don't why I bother, it's like shooting whales in a goldfish bowl.

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Monday, 6 June 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

razorlite, the killers and that other one would go to the opening of a matchbox if there was some publicity to be had. those bands have no credibility at all.
you dont see radiohead, the pixies, or the white stripes on there, do you? its all tired old sods and short term chancers after a bit of attention.

mike hunt, Monday, 6 June 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh come on. Does anybody know if The White Stripes were asked?

Music Mick, Monday, 6 June 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 13 June 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

N_RQ, Monday, 13 June 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Rock band Pink Floyd's classic line-up will be reunited on stage

That means that Syd's back right?

NickB (NickB), Monday, 13 June 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

yes. Syd will be there. Singing. And um, playing guitar. AAaaaan effer-vescing elephant...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 13 June 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
the more I think about Live8 the more annoyed I am. What does it prove that a bunch of people will go see a bunch of celebrity filled free concerts? What the hell does that prove about people's opinions about world debt? What is this bullshit?

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

when the fuck did OASIS become the voice of reason?

from pitchfork:

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but they hoping that one of these guys from the G8 is on a quick 15-minute break at Gleneagles and sees Annie Lennox singing 'Sweet Dreams' and thinks, 'Fuck me, she might have a point there, you know'."

"Keane doing 'Somewhere Only We Know' and some japanese businessman going, 'Aw, look at him...we should really fucking drop that debt, you know'. It's not going to happen, is it?" .

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

you dont see radiohead, the pixies, or the white stripes on there, do you? its all tired old sods and short term chancers after a bit of attention.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

Muse and The Cure are now doing the (free) Paris Live8. No reason to attend at Hyde Park. Pfffft.
