The Rocket Girl label. Rose phoenix-like from the (subsequent) ashes of Ché records with a clutch of fab 7" singles and an increasingly brilliant roster. Discuss. Likes n' dislikes. etc.

Fave RG moments: Coldharbourstores "all that matters now" 7", "Where The Fuck Is Kevin Shields".. Low/Piano Magic/Transient Waves 7"...

Plus I've been hearing good stuff about the Pluxus album (which I have yet to hear)

I love Vinita What Runs the Label dearly, she's a most friendly person and I've had a chance to meet her several times now. I should say, "Where the Fuck is Kevin Shields" -- a brilliant song -- was actually licensed from another Stateside label. ;-) In terms of what she's put out that's her own baby, as it were -- search for the Spacemen 3 tribute, if only for the Low track alone, as well as all that there groovy Piano Magic material, plus Gnac and the EAR.

As a side note, does anyone know why Ché shut up shop?

Didn't Ché/Che/Ché merely have hella cashflow issues?

would be classik for low birth weight alone, but i'm relatively unfamiliar otherwise. anyone care to expound on the rest of the roster a bit?

RG has put out records by Füxa (far from essential these days but still occasionally worthwhile), Mazarin (fantastic psychy indiepop), Coldharbourstores (reminds me of that first Hood album on Domino), State River Widening (pretty acoustic-y instrumental post rock thingy), the oft-mentioned Gnac...

Is Slipsteam still there, or did they break up. I hope they release another album.

Slipstream were never on Rocket Girl. I think their last release was a 7" on Enraptured a couple of years ago, and before that the "Be Groovy Or Leave" LP from '97.

It appears Mark Refoy is now in The Sunny Valley Dance Band with the rhythm section from the unfortunate Ultrasound.

Pluxus Pluxus Pluxus. I love Pluxus. Yes indeedy. I also really like the Fuxa stuff that I've heard, which is of course made even better by the Telescopes connection, wooha. I will have more to say on this after Tuesday, when I attend the Rocket Girl night.

Help help! Is the Coldharbourstores record out yet? Is it any good?

Andy K, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I quite liked the Mazarin album.

The Coldharbourstores album came out last week (or this week). It's in the mail, haven't heard it yet..

Curious, unexpected urge to play this:

(Possibly prompted by hearing Morrissey's "Boxers" on a compilation).

Wow, thanks for that! No second thoughts about ordering. Tracklist looks great. Rocket Girl was a very formative label for me, bring to my attention artists like Füxa, Transient Waves, the SP3 comp, Azusa, Piano Magic.

Yeah, same here, such a high concentration of great music from one little label.

one month passes...

The book arrived today! And it's a stunner. She even threw in two 7"'s from the back catalogue for free. There's two 7"'s inside the book as well, along with the cd. Can't wait to play with this after work.

Weird - I wonder what I had a curious urge to play two years ago (and if the link disappeared or if I never actually posted a link and everyone was too polite to mention it)?

I'm guessing this:
