Visiting this weekend and haven't been there in years. I remember Eide's had a good selection, but was a bit pricey. Paul's also rings a bell, but I think they were more orientated towards CDs. Any suggestions? Thanks

Eide's and Paul's are more oriented towards CDs and new vinyl. Try:

*Record Rama Sound Archives
*Jerry's Records (2136 Murray Ave)
*Dave's Music Mine (1210 E. Carson)
*Record Graveyard (333 N. Craig)

Of these, Jerry's probably has the largest selection of used vinyl. I spent wayyyy too much $$ there in high school.

My girlfriend took me to a place called the Record Exchange when we went up there. Nice selection of CDs, but I don't recall seeing much vinyl.

i thought Jerry's closed a couple years ago.

Actually, it crossed my mind that this might be your thread.

xpost: I haven't been to Jerry's for a few years, though I recall they moved spaces (consolidated some stock) 5-6 years ago. Contact info -- info@jerrysrecords.com.

The Record Exchanges in Pgh are the chain/franchise which originated in Cleveland -- as Vinnie said, decent selection of used CDs (with good $5/$2.50/$1 bins) but little vinyl.

being a native i'm continually disappointed by the state of record stores in the 'burgh. paul's is the only place i even remotely found new or used cd's that i really wanted. eide's is great if you like metal and its myriad shades. jerry's is still good but they keep odd hours. everything else - including dave's on the south side (which used to have a kick-ass electronic section) is total shite. it was WAY better in the early 90's...

If you want vinyl, you HAVE to pay a visit to Jerry's in Squirrel Hill. It's easy to find and has an enormous selection. If you want new CDs (especially if you aren't looking for something in particular), Pauls on Liberty Ave is the best place within several hours. The various Record Exchanges around town have a decent used CD collection at some of the lowest prices possible...especially the one in South Side (though which one to choose tends to be more chance depending on what each has in stock). If you just go into the Record Exchange trying to find a couple mid-quality CDs for 2.50 or 5.00, then you might have some luck, but don't expect anything in particular...used or new. The Record Exchange's vinyl selection isn't great, but occasionally you can get lucky. In one trip, for instance, I got an Ian Dury and the Blockheads album and Harry Nilson's Nilson Schmillson in good condition for .99 each.

And don't bother with Dave's unless you're over there anyway. It's far better than anything around where I live, but in the Burgh, there's much better options.

thanks everyone. sounds like Jerry's is my best bet.

six years pass...

for those in the area, jerry's records (in squirrel hill) will give away 33,000 records this weekend.
