i bought this long time ago and finally listened to it this weekend. thought more fake country...but its undeniably very gorgeous. even though the melodies are totally completely predictable its nice. NICE, bitch... hmmm not really relaying well whats good ...not just nice, but got some unusual subtle stuff going on - more inside the recesses of the instrumentation than anything else. i don't think its the singer's ideas either. it sounds like someone crashed the band and saved it. also sounds like they use odd instruments to get there. i smell a semi-genius maybe. curious about others opinions and any background on them.

I like this one a lot... pretty and spare, nice electro accents. You should check out South San Gabriel Songs/Music - more of the same. I think Will Johnson is very talented, although he needs an editor sometimes. The new SSG was going OK for me until I found out it is a song cycle about his freakin' cat.

He also records solo, but his main outlet is Centro-matic. They started off as a cross between Son Volt and GBV (to my ears). I liked their last one, Love You Just the Same - start there if you haven't already.

otm on him needing an editor - think if they had one they'd have less of a sonvolt/wilco issue and more uncle tupelo good thing going...in my opinion. i must hear the feline inspired song cyle - it sounds awesome! i think i somehow have a centromatic cd somewhere - will definitely take a listen if i can find it.
