What was the biggest openly obscene/vulgar song in pop music history?

I was trying to think of this the other day but couldn't figure it out. The criteria is that the choice has to be "openly" explicit (songs like Yummy, Yummy, Yummy don't count because of later-revealed sexual innuendo, nor can it be just highly suggestive). The song has to be both "in-your-face" vulgar and a big chart topper (or the closest thing to the combination as you can think of). What song best represents this? Is there even one?

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

start me up by the stones--for the line: you can make a dead man come.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

it's not a chart topper by any stretch, but peter wyngarde's unfeasibly groovy and completely and utterly offensive "rape" deserves a mention.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

The album/12" version of "Let's Pretend We're Married."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

Not a big hit as a single, but on a multiplatinum album.

Oh yeah, "Erotic City" got a lot of airplay.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

Start Me Up is a good choice but many people are unaware of that last line so that it's almost a throwaway. I'm trying to think of a song that made radio programmers wince and think "How are people tolerating this?" and more amazingly people did.

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

something by the red hot chilli peppers

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

snowballing (snowballing), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

My Neck, My Back by whatever her name was. Like duh, right?

Atnevon (Atnevon), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

Nine Inch Nails - Closer

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

My Neck, My Back > Closer in vomit-worthiness

Though one time I was in the car with my mother and Closer came on and she was like now this man wrote this song with anger in his heart and he wants to hurt people. So it is kinda a neat song or whatever.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

Surely we mustn't forget Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Relax"

"relax, go to it, when you want to come" complete with gushy splashing white noise spray on a synth . . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

i second 'Relax'

Robin Goad (rgoad), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

how about "bobby brown" by frank zappa? at least in sweden it became a huge hit and people were like "but doesn't anyone understand what it's about?!!"

peter danielsson, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

'switch'

N_RQ, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

2 Live Crew's "Me so horny" apparently snuck into the top40.

Bibelen (Øystein), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

"Sugar Walls."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

to the windows! to the walls!

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

DON'T LIKE NO SHORT DICK MEN!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

The answer's still "Relax".

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

How's Relax "openly" obscene?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:18 (twenty years ago)

Not that big worldwide, but here in Norway, "Bobby Brown" topped the singles charts for weeks.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

"Walk On the Wild Side"? All that stuff about giving head. Also, what about "Apeman" by The Kinks, how on earth did they get away with the line, "The air pollution is fucking up my eyes"?

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

er, 'relax' is openly obscene cos it's about delaying ejaculation, yes?

N_RQ, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

How's Relax "openly" obscene?

"relax, go to it, when you want to come" complete with gushy splashing white noise spray on a synth

And we won't even mention the video...

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

"Touch Me (I Want You Body)" by Samantha Fox had a lot of quite obscene elements in it.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Christ, not a single '50s R&B track yet? "Sixty Minute Man" topped the R&B chart for like, 17 WEEKS back in '51!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

http://www.anticoemoderno.it/Antico/Vinile/ingrandimenti/Donna%20Summer%20-%20Love%20to%20love%20you%20baby.jpg

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

that Fuck You I Don't Want You Back song that was number one for a bit last year was pretty obscene, obscenely bad that is! ba boom! kertish!

elwisty (elwisty), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

And we won't even mention the video...

but there were two videos, weren't there? the other being an amusingly clean one? (cf also soft cell, "sex dwarf".)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I certainly don't think they'd've shown the Golden Showers version on Saturday Superstore.

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

AHem. Ying Yang Twins.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

The "make a dead man come" line certainly wasn't penned by Jagger. It's been used in many old blues songs, including perhaps the most obscene/vulgar song ever: "Shave 'em Dry" by Lucille Bogan.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

The chart topper criteria would rule out Marianne Faithfull's "Why'd Ya Do It" then. Pity...

Michael Collie (Sans Sushi), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

yeah 'Wait' seems like the winner.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

What about "My Ding-a-Ling," the original version (Dave Barthalomew, I believe)? It was definitely at least a regional hit in New Orleans in the early 50's.

Keith C (kcraw916), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I know it's suggestive and not really explicit, but it's DIRTY!

Keith C (kcraw916), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

"Great Balls of Fire"

Beta (abeta), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Louie Louie, of course.

PDAS, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

it might not be the single most obscene song ever, but surely that a la la la la long, girl i want to make you sweat song deserves a mention

robin (robin), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

It seems like there should be a modern track that wins - "Milkshake," for example - but I have to go with "Sugar Walls."

mike a, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

50's "Candy Shop" would have been very dirty if it weren't so... juvenile.

Ahh, "Shave 'Em Dry." I still have nightmarish flashbacks to those lyrics. AND THE CRABS WALKS IN LIKE PEOPLE, people!!!

And I don't even understand exactly what "shaving 'em dry" means.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

I like how lukey mentioned "Get Low" and no one even blinked.

Is "Wait" bigger than "Oochie Wally"? What about "Do You Really Wanna Touch It?" "How Many Licks"? "Doin' It"? "Me So Horny"? "Freak Me"? "Bump And Grind"? "(I Like The) Crotch On You"? "Lick It"?

I kind of wonder about the hermetic bubble that ILM lives in sometimes.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

well it's definitely more "obscene" and "vulgar" and straight NASTY than any of them.

"What's your fantasy" has got to be a candidate too.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

[Sisqo]
Hold up
So what you're saying is, oh
(Niggaz got me pissed like Lil' Kim)
You want to get freaky again, aight
A-ooh-ah-ooh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

[Lil' Kim]
I've been a lot of places, seen a lot of faces
Ah hell I even fuck with different races
A white dude - his name was John
He had a Queen Bee Rules tattoo on his arm, uh
He asked me if I'd be his date for the prom
and he'd buy me a horse, a Porsche and a farm
Dan my nigga from Down South
Used to like me to spank him and cum in his mouth
And Tony he was Italian (Uh-huh)
And he didn't give a fuck (Uh-huh)
That's what I liked about him
He ate my pussy from dark till the mornin
Called his girl up and told her we was bonin
Puerto Rican papi, used to be a Deacon
But now he be sucking me off on the weekend
And this black dude I called King Kong
He had a big ass dick and a hurricane tongue

[Sisqo]
So, how many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Cause I've got to know)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Tell me)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Oh, oh)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh)

[Lil' Kim]
This verse goes out to my niggaz in jail
Beatin they dicks to the double-X-L; Magazine (uhh)
You like how I look in the aqua green? Get your Vaseline
Roll some weed with some tissue and close your eyes
Then imagine your tongue in between my thighs
[*Moans*] Baby.. ohh.. yes ohh!
Jailer.. open up.. cell, block, eight
[*sexual sounds*]
Alright nigga, that's enough
Stop, look and listen; get back to your position
Kim got your dick hard, startin fights in the yard
Hotter than a Pop Tart fresh out of the toaster
Niggaz do anything for a Lil' Kim poster
Eses, Bloods, Crips, all the thugs
Up North in the hole, they all wanna know

[Sisqo]
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Tell me, ha)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Tell me, oh yeah)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Oh, oh)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Oh, oh, oh, oh)

[Lil' Kim]
If you drivin in the street, hold on to your seat
Niggaz, grab your meat while I ride the beat
And if you see a shiny black Lamborghini fly by ya
(Shoom!) That's me the Knight Rider
Dressed in all black with the gat in the lap
Lunatics in the street - gotta keep the heat
Sixty on the bezel, a hundred on the rings
Sittin pretty baby with a Cash Money bling
12 A.M. I'm on the way to club
After three bottles I'll be ready to fuck
Some niggaz even put me on their grocery lists
Right next to the whip cream and box of chocolates
Designer pussy, my shit come in flavors
High-class taste niggaz got to spend paper
Lick it right the first time or you gotta do it over
Like it's rehearsal for a Tootsie commercial

How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Tell me)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Let me know, let me know)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Oh, oh)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Oh, oh yeah)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Yeah)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Oh, oh)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Baby tell me)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?
(Oh, oh, oh)
How many licks does it take till you get to the center of the?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking "chart hit", too! "Oochie Wally" peaked at 33 and "Doin' It" was the #9 song of 1996 but lyrically not in the same league as the other songs I listed. "How Many Licks" appears to have stalled out at 75, which shockes me because Boston radio was playing it every other song in its heyday.

"Me So Horny" was the #26 song of 1989.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

what about "Apeman" by The Kinks, how on earth did they get away with the line, "The air pollution is fucking up my eyes"

because the lyric is actually "The air pollution is FOGGING up my eyes"

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

DADAISMUS! i thought those were the lyrics to "apeman" for a long time, too, and used to talk about how that was one of the first pop songs ever to blah blah blah, but its actually "FOGGING up my eyes."

"working class hero" for simple obscenity

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but doesn't have to actually describe a vulgar act to be considered obscene? "working class hero" just uses fucking as a cuss word.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

"Brown Sugar" is quite vulgar: slavery, eating pussy, heroin...

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

"Sugar Walls" is impressive.

But can we get an honorable mention for "Do that to me one more time / once is never enough with a man like you"?

The Mad Puffin, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

not that vulgar, but I always loved ZZ Top for slipping "SHIT I got to have her" into "Legs".

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Probably not the winner, but an honorable mention at the very least for going to #1 on the US singles charts:

I got a taste of the real world
When I went down on you, babe

"Miracles," Jefferson Starship

But, wait: was the single an edit of the album version?

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Afternoon Delight!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm still in awe that "Oochie Wally" cracked the top-40.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Seriously! And note that the much-discussed "beat that pussy up" turns up in it - twice.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Norah Jones I Dont Know Why

US: 10x Platinum
Billboard peak: # 1 (for 4 weeks)

...

Something has to make you run
I don't know why I didn't come
I feel as empty as a drum
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

I want to second Tim Finney's nom of "Closer" in part because its vulgar sexual obscenity is tied to sacrilege in the chorus.

Two tablespoon's of cinnamon,
and two or three egg whites.
A half a stick of butter?. Melted?
stick it all in a bowl baby.
Stir it with a wooden spoon.
Mix in a cup of flour,
you'll be in heaven soon.

Say everybody have you seen my balls
they're big and salty and brown.
If you ever need a quick pick me up
just stick my balls in your mouth.

Oooo suck on my chocolate salted balls
stick em in your mouth, and suck em!
Suck on my chocolate salted balls,
they're packed full of vitamins, and good for you.
So suck on my balls.

Quarter cup of unsweeten chocolate,
and a half a cup of brandy.
You throw in a bag or two of sugar
and just a pinch of vanilla.
Grease up the cookie sheet.
Cause I hate when my balls stick.
Then preheat the oven to three fifty
and give that spoon a lick?

Say everybody have you seen my balls
they're big and salty and brown.
If you ever need a quick pick me up
just stick my balls in your mouth.

Suck on my chocolate salted balls.
Put em in your mouth, and suck em!
Suck on my chocolate salted balls,
there packed full of goodness, high on fiber.
Suck on my balls.

[sniff, sniff, sniff]
Hey, wait a minute.
What's that smell.
Smell like something burning.
Well that don't confront me none.
Long as I get my rent paid on Friday.
Baby you better get back in the kitchen.
Cause I got a sneak'n suspicion.
Oh man baby, baby!
You just burned my balls!
Help me, my balls on fire
????? baby
my balls are burning
give me some water!
Pour some water on me!
my balls are burning
oh my goodness,
I'm blow'n
I'm blow'n
do somethin

Oooo Suck on my chocolate salted balls.
Put em in your mouth, and suck em!
They'r on fire baby!
Suck on my chocolate salted balls,
put em out baby, blow
ohh
Suck on my balls baby
Suck on my balls baby
Suck on my, red hot, salted, chocolate balls
come on baby
woo, woo
suck on my balls.
[blow blow]

i would like to point out that fancys narrative featrures a mother selling her daughter into white slavery, to rescue her from grinding poverty.

has there been any song on the charts whos main narratives view selling a daughter as a feasible, genreally positive, hortio alger tale?

i think it is sooo easy for people to write trashy lyrics now, but as far as when it was a little more risquee i would have to say "head" or "let's pretend we're married" by prince or maybe... "nasty girl" or "wet dream" from vanity. i won't even go into her solo lp. i miss vanity being a tramp!

ebenoit, Thursday, 9 June 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

I always thought "Butterfly" by Crazy Town was really dirty, though it's probably more suggestive than obscene. Also, the new Eminem song about how assorted celebrities give him a woody.

But neither of those are in Li'l Kim's league.

"she never lost her head, even when she was giving head"

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Sunday, 12 June 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Stagger Lee as trad. arr'd by Nick Cave. Not really the stuff of Top 40 radio, of course, but nonetheless a jaw-droppingly violent and obscene single that received plenty of late night airplay. "I'd crawl over fifty good pussies just to get to one fat boy's asshole" remains the most hilariously vulgar lyric I've ever heard.

Palomino (Palomino), Sunday, 12 June 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I say "Erotic City" because it was played unedited on Top 40 radio around NYC. All. The. Time.

Though I tend to think "Oochie Wally" took the crown in those stakes a few years back.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 12 June 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

"Wait" wins. "My Neck My Back" takes 2nd. "Openly" vulgar is the key - most of the songs being mentioned are not quite as obvious as these 2. Vulgar? Yes, but not nearly as obvious and in-your-face.
