or rather, it hasnt stayed up to date with developments in black music has it? or rather, with any other music but itself. or even more rather, something has been lost since it started being so self referential and stopped drawing from anything but itself. this is why most rock sucks today or sounds like it could have been made about two decades ago.

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday, walking my son home from school. He's in third grade.

"Dad, we learned about Robert Johnson in music class."

"Oh, really? What song did you hear? (starts singing 'Crossroads')"

"ENOUGH! I don't remember what song, but the teacher said that rock and pop music wouldn't exist today if it hadn't been for him."

"Hmmmmm..."

"was this 'Diamond Dogs'? i heard it was bad."

Expose your kid to Leadbelly.

Brother Builder (Unfortunate Prankster), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Do Not expose your kid to Michael Jackson.

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

it wasn't timba's finest hour, or beck's, or bowie's, imo.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

I keep reading the thread starter's question, but no matter how I try, it just doesn't make any sense.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Uh, right, if you conveniently overlook that whole nu-metal thing.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

This was a really boring question.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

maybe the "since rockers stopped borrowing from black music" part should be erased from the title.

Bloc Party even went as far as borrowing a black man to front them -- even so, their music sounds like Coldplay and Interpol but far more lifeless than those two groups.

It's true about Kid Rock's rock music at least.

james k polk, Thursday, 29 January 2009 00:50 (seventeen years ago)

Rock never stopped borrowing from black music. But it didn't get really good until it started borrowing from European music in addition.
