Trout were the most extraordinary band I have ever come across in my entire life .They were not a power trio ,but there were three of them. They were……….William Rogan (vocals , guitar): Wore eye make up to make him look like a superhero. Had hair like Keith Richards before the Str***s made mullets trendy. Sang lyrics such as “I’m a lizard in a blizzard , I’ll never be wizard , don’t try to find me , I blew myself up ,I tried my own luck , I told my guardian angel to get to fuck!!”
One time I met William and I said that I hadn’t seen him in a while ,he told me that he’d lost his shoes. As well as being an enigmatic front man he was also the worst guitarist in the group.
James Steenson (bass): Closet intellectual. Never ever had a lead for his bass.
Kenny Beattie (drummer): Also the best guitar player in Trout. Once hid in a bush on Great Western Road for an hour thinking someone was trying to kill him when it was actually me trying to give him a lift. He used to despair at Trouts lack of traditional musical proficiency.
We put out Trout"s “Three Wise Men EP” in conjunction with Tom Worthingtons Bosque label. It was recorded in Mark from Starstruck and Yummyfur (who is sadly now dead) and his girlfriend Phillipa"s (who was in Dick Johnson and Lungleg) front room.
Trout also used to do amazing acoustic shows which were especially good as people used to hear what William was singing. They did this under the post-Kenny name of TV Disturbo at our last show in Birmingham in 1999. When they played as a full band they were somewhere between the Butthole Surfers, Joy Division and Syd Barrett.
I miss Trout.
intrigued.
