Anybody know? And if so, when?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I sure hope so! It's great! The lyrics to that album are AMAZING.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

I agree with Snrub. It is great and more people over here need to hear it. I have doubts that they'll break mainstream in the US like a Franz Ferdinand or whatever, because they're not really "pretty" people. But it's a fucking monster album.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Thirded! I didn't think I would like it, but the sneer and attitude really makes them endearing.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Whoa, haven't heard of these fellows before but seems interesting.

it's available on emusic

a banana (alanbanana), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

I just looked them up. I'm impressed.

"Formed a Band" is last year's "Losing My Edge"?

I wavered on them a bit, but the album's pretty good. I like "18,000 Lira".

"Enrique's got a head cold again, it's not his fault, he is a brave and valiant leader. He couldn't even get buspasses this time, just scooters. VERY FAST scooters. 18,000 lira, 18,000 lira (pause) SOUNDS LIKE A LOTTER MANNY"

M Annoyman (Ferg), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

The ability to sing is pretty low on the totem pole of priorities these days, ain't it?

Thanks a lot, Pitchfork.

darin (darin), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

We'll leave you alone to listen to you Michael Buble records, darin.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Har har

darin (darin), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

it's rare enough that an album makes me laugh once, but this one has done it repeatedly without ever feeling like a novelty.

rajeev (rajeev), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

It's kinda like McClusky if they shedded the pigfuck vibe.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Haha. That would be "Mclusky"

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

i've only listened to 2 songs and completely hated it.
maybe i'll give it a spin tonight.

That One Guy (That One Guy), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

This is something that, if it had come out about the time I was 14, would most assuredly have been some kind of "defining" album for me. At 31, it still makes an impact, though. It kind of seems bigger its peers.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Love love love the Brut. Aces live, and the album's splendid - as has been said, it's funny without being a novelty, and that's a tricky balance to strike. My review, for what it's worth:

Art Brut – Bang Bang Rock And Roll (Fierce Panda)

Art Brut are all we need. Five attention-seeking students who formed a band and then released a meta-song called ‘Formed A Band’ detailing their preposterous plans to “write a song as universal as Happy Birthday”. Singer Eddie Argos delights, like Justine Frischman before him, in enunciating in defiantly middle-class tones the often cringe-making details of his life – from hopeless schoolboy love (radio hit in waiting ‘Emily Kane’) to, well, hopeless erectile dysfunction on “Rusted Guns of Milan”. Eddie’s life was changed forever by Pulp’s ‘His’n’Hers’, but Art Brut’s delivery is closer to The Sultans of Ping bashing out Fall songs. Art Brut are all we need. They’re seriously hopeless. You’ll love them. You’ll hate them. And that’s exactly the point.
5/5

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

they're good live then? that's good. that's what i figured/hoped, but the BBC session i heard sounded flat.

rajeev (rajeev), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

oh no, you have to *see* them - just hearing them live ain't enough.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

It's weird how a band who sings about how they hate White Light/White Heat is so loved by indie people everywhere.

Even though I don't agree with Art Brut, I still like them a lot.

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

I love the idea of Art Brut and enjoy the :30 snippets at the iTunes store.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

It's kinda like McClusky if they shedded the pigfuck vibe.

Hm...this gets me interested, except the pigfuck vibe was a lot of what I LIKED about Mclusky....the only UK band I can think of in recent times that just rocked the fuck out....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

The lead singer has dyspraxia and claims to be LITERALLY UNABLE TO SING ON KEY.
I've only heard 'Emily Kane', but that one song along with the above info renders them classic unto me.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

just listened to half of it and it just pissed me off.
but that's the whole point right? these guys, the blood brothers, and the ex-models just want to piss people off

That One Guy (That One Guy), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

Art Brut is more like a Brit Thermals to me. Lovable and heading somewhere quickly.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

He could sing near key if he wanted to. I'm glad he doesn't. I'm all about this to near-teenage levels.

nabiscothingy, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

"...the blood brothers, and the ex-models just want to piss people off"

Those bands don't piss me off. They just encourage me to listen to something else.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

I keep trying to tell people they're a comedy band whenever they're mentioned on here. It's not my fault if you don't pay attention

DJ Mencap0))), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
According to a NY Times review of their Tribeca Grand show, US rel early next year.

I heard them for the first time live on WFMU Saturday and was quite pleased:

...but then, I prefer comedy to music, of late.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

I've seen her naked ... TWICE!

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Eddie Argos, last night at Spaceland:

"Now we're going to play a new song even though it's not finished yet - I mean, the band finished all the music, but I haven't finished ripping off Billy Childish yet."

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Yes, they really are wankers aren't they.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 18 November 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Raw Patrick, you should know that the Arts Bruts are very much of the popular in ESTONIA. So why do you do "diss" them? The only peoples that are "dissing" the Arts Bruts are the sexualhomos like The Party Block. You are not of the sexualhomo are you?

Piotr Skut, Saturday, 19 November 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

Bloc Party probably smell nice. Art Brut almost certainly do not. For me, that's case closed.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Saturday, 19 November 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Patrick Draw, The Party Block is from SCOTLAND! Do you know the Scotlandman eats? Fried Kippers. That is very smelling. Closed case!

Piotr Skut, Saturday, 19 November 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

I heard this album in a shop a few months back and I'm sorry, but it was absolutely appauling.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 19 November 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)
