(How come there isn't a dancing topic?)

Cool Hand Luuke (ex machina), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Also, what do I wear when I dance to drum and bass?

Cool Hand Luuke (ex machina), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

No answers yet, and it's already thread of the month!

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Drum'n'bass is really fun to dance to!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

I mean, how do you dance to anything?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

It's not like it's in a weird time signature or anything. (Except Stereolab's "Parsec," which is D&B in 5/4.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

I find my body knows what to do.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

It's the "what do I wear" question that does it, though. Is there an identifiable d&b fashion? Are you looking for an answer like "wear loose-fitting, breathable clothes" or a brand suggestion? I dunno, wear last season's diesel.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Do I just thow my hands up and kind of thrash around?
xpost...
OK SO I DRESS LIKE A METROSEXUAL?

Dance like that crazy bitch that was in that one car commercial that Dave Chappelle made fun of!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and get one of those expando-contracto glow-in-the-dark ball dealies!

At least one part of you should GLOW.

"Dance like that crazy bitch that was in that one car commercial that Dave Chappelle made fun of!"

Hahaha I bet know which car commercial this is (even though I've never seen this bit.)

Why do you care - D & B is so 10 years ago. Learn how to dance to Reggaetron and grime instead.

It's not like it's in a weird time signature or anything. (Except Stereolab's "Parsec," which is D&B in 5/4.)

Or every Venetian Snares song ever, which is in 7/4.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, how would you dance to Bombs Over Baghdad?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

dance to the bass* (and feel it)
pay attention to the drums

easy ;)

usually ends up being some appaling ffwd version of reggae skanking but then I'm not exactly much of a mover.

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Dude HUGE D&B revival now. Grime sucks and D&B has certainly incorperated new elements into it.

It's like breakdancing, but mid-air

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Just nod your head to every other beat/bass note and go from there.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

You might try throwing your hands in the motherfucking air and waving them around like you just really aren't that concerned about anything.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Do I just thow my hands up and kind of thrash around?

no thats trance dancing. if you ever do that at a dnb party they stab you in the face

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

seriously though, most of the dnb dancing ive seen looked like lightning-fast tripping over shoelaces, regaining balance, tripping again, etc. amphetamine is key, or so ive been told

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I've heard of Reggaeton, but Reggaetron?! Is that like the bobsleds from Cool Runnings mixed with the cycles from Tron?

So what do I wear while bob-cycling to Reggaetron?

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

The interesting thing about drum and bass is that the beats are musically complex and intellectually interesting, which is a lot more important than danceability anyway.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

There goes the neighborhood.

Cool Hand Luuke (ex machina), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Uh, Jon, I don't think Travis Morrison invented that trope.

It's so easy to dance to D&B. But I prefer watching my husband dance to it.

OTM.. dance to the bass. Otherwise, can take a while to catch on. I found at first something totally unnatural about it, different than what I'd been used to from dancing to like hip hop or other club music.

I used to see some kids with crazy crazy moves but always this completely militaristic precision, I don't know how they did it.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

If you can do it dancing to the beats are a lot more fun though, although rather tiring so you either need to be in a really good mood or on good drugs.

I was thinking the other day that we should have a thread where ILXORs who have seen other ILXORs dance should try to describe the other person's dancing style

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

In my case, how can you describe the wind? (If it were a miniature cyclone defying the laws of physics, aiming to destroy all around it.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

this used to be fun

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

i've seen good d'n'b/jungle dancing, but it's the type of shit that is not for the "layman" dancer. i'd suggest standing in front of a throbbing bass cone with a joint and nodding your head.

Amon (eman), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

BACK AND FORTH

Cool Hand Luuke (ex machina), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

When I dance to drum'n'bass I usually begin by dancing to the beat, but if/when I get tired I can switch to "half-beat", i.e. reacting only to every other beat (I guess this is roughly the same as dancing to the bass) - and later on go back to full beat, if I feel like it. Drum'n'bass is definitely danced with your legs and waist; you can make hand movements, but they should be breakdancey (quick, sharp and not too dramatic), not trancey/housey.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

If you are holding a baby, the dance is the same for every kind of music - a kind of gentle swaying.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure if I was quite clear about the "half-beat"... I meant, if a song is in 4/4, you can choose to move either to the 2nd and the 4th strike, like with other club music, or to the 4th only.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

bouncing them on yr knees is even better - apparantly scientific tests have concluded that this makes them superior dancers when they are older!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

Dance on the half-step. Dance like you would to hip hop only the it's twice as fast, presenting you with more opportunities to throw in an extra step should the need arise. Easy.

ninethirtyfive, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

Anything that involves sitting down gets a very low approval rating at the moment.

The good thing about drum'n'bass is that the rhythm is meant for the brain rather than the feet. Just like prog rock songs in 5/4, 7/4 or 11/4.

Good music is supposed to be aimed at the brain, not the feet.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 23 January 2006 13:10 (twenty years ago)

i must assume you havent clicked the youtube link

Yawn (Wintermute), Monday, 23 January 2006 13:13 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I've been anywhere where dancing takes place since drum'n'bass was invented.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 23 January 2006 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Is that video supposed to be funny? (I'm at school so I couldn't listen to the soundtrack.) That's pretty much the way I dance to d'n'b too.

Not quite right Geir,

Good music is aimed at the brain, good music is aimed at the feet, but great music is aimed at both.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

That's not quite right either.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Maybe Geir doesn't have feet, did any of you dolts consider that.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Good music does what it's supposed to do. If it supposed to make you dance like a motherfucker, and it succeeds in that A+, then it's good. If it's supposed to take you in a different place while you lie in your bed, and it succeeds in that, that's good too. Some musicians try to do both, and sometimes they succeed (though I have to say the fail more often than not), and that's also good. But there's no qualification that says this type of music is more worthy than the other two.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

good music is aimed at the pancreas

Good music is aimed at the brain, good music is aimed at the feet, but great music is aimed at both.

You mean, ABC, Human League, Pet Shop Boys, Saint Etienne and Scritti Politti is the only great music there is? :)

dont think about what to wear to how to dance at a d n b night there's usually such a range of people doing and wearing different things. You get your classic black floppy haired emo's in their tighter than tight drain pipe jeans, your ghetto gangsters and your skaters in their baggys and your preps in their normal straight legs all doing their own thing but by end of night everyone looses all their quarms, style and dignity and forces together in one massive sweaty raving gang. Thats the beautiful thing about D n B raves, the music goes over all genres and you get such a mix of people all hanging out together. I usually go for a pair of baggys and a boob tube and rave lik theres no tomoro, my moves sometimes involve a little break dancin in the drops cos im cool like that.

katie628, Wednesday, 19 April 2006 09:58 (twenty years ago)

The secret's in the off beat, unlike evry other genre of 'dance' music. Think reggae and double it.

dr lulu (dr lulu), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 23:25 (twenty years ago)

My friend jokes about how dancing to drum n' bass is usually nothing more than shodowboxing a lot of the time.

Not that I have done it much, but in dancing to drum n' bass I always imagine like, making X patterns with your body, it's wierd but drum n' bass dancing is all X's to me. Basically it's just crossing your arms and leg over each other like an X. That's all I can really say for the most part.

reading VV thread all day, had to butt in on this one.

you're right, the secret is in the off-beat. my friends make fun of my drum and bass pogo-sway but i can't help it, it's very relaxing. a spin now and then doesn't hurt but i do it with less flair than i used to and more in stages, to get a different look at the crowd.

i echo what tuomas said about it being a legs-and-waist-centric dance, which i really love, because even after 8 years of raving i haven't figured out what to do with my hands. other than put them in my pockets, or hold a drink.

it sounds like you dont have enough confidence to boogey down, just dont give a flying fuck about what anyone thinks and then it doesnt matter how you dance because youre not out to impress anyone, youre just here for that grimey fat bassline... and thats what DNB is all about my wanna-be raving friend... i hear aswell that perhaps dropping a few pills might make u not able to stop dancing, till 6am ....of course, not that i would know...............................

Serious answer: Move your fists up and down like you're milking a giant cow (or you're milking a cow while standing in a trench). Do not attempt to synchronise foot/leg movements with your fists. Legs are to be utilised in a stepping backwards and forwards motion that results in you gradually turning in the spot. To add variety, every so often you should suddenly and no warning walk backwards without looking where you're going, so as to collide with someone else on the dancefloor.
