Indv songs too many to mention, but Fleetwood Mac, Everly Bros, and Beach Boys probabl hold the top three spots.

PB, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Cunga (Cunga), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

Geir, seriously, acquire Funkadelic's America Eats Its Young. I can honestly envision you liking large portions of it (it's a double album & not entirely Funque Musick)!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

The Everly Brothers - Love Hurts (Very hard to pick one)
Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris - The Angels Rejoiced Last Night
(I'll come back later when I can figure out which actual Louvin Brothers to pick)

fire "fathers name is dad" (demanding that the harmonies be added to this is the best thing paul mccartney ever did for the world)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

The Roches, "Hammond Song"
X, "White Girl"
Multitracked Lindsey Buckingham, "That's All For Everyone"

Those are the ones that gut me every time.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

( i kid, i kid. some of these do indeed have lovely harmonies)

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

Christ, I forgot Gram Parsons/Emmylou Harris on "Hearts on Fire," which is better than all of those.

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Moody Blues - Have You Heard
War - The World Is A Ghetto

Bee Gees - You Don't Know What It's Like
Todd Rundgren - Something to Fall Back On

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

I think your Bee Gees pick is called "To Love Somebody."

Critics of the thread so far such as oops, show us what you got, list some (more) songs.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm really bad at remembering and singling out specific songs. (had to google 'congos' in order to list that upthread)
but if you're talking about groups known for their harmonies (not even touching on solo artists who almost always were backed by superb harmonizers or duos like Marvin and Tammi), you've got your Techniques/Uniques, Stylistics, Delfonics, Temptations, Wailing Souls, Gaylads, Royals, Impressions, Melodians, MIGHTY DIAMONDS, Ethiopians, Paragons, Shirelles, Chi-Lites, the SUPREMES, the Shangri-Las, the Spinners the Drifters, the Heptones, the Gladiators...

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

Not to nitpick, but. . .Four Seasons' orig. of "Silence is Golden" is WAY better than the Tremeloes version.

JAS, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

And as far as a Beach Boys song, I'd probably have to go with "Wendy."

JAS, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

Wire, "Outdoor Miner".

scriblerus (mike lynch), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

the two that come immediately to mind are:

flamingos, "i only have eyes for you"
zombies, "time of the season"

...both of whose harmonies i would describe as otherworldly, maybe even otheruniversely.

somewhat strange, in that more than anything i go for two-part harmonies (beatles, everly, marvin and tammi, that sort of thing). but those are the songs that are at the front of the line for me.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

O-o-h Child - Five Stairsteps
I Can't Let Go - Evie Sands
Hold Me - Fleetwood Mac seconded
Beat of the Drum - Homestead & Wolfe

aw fuck, I can't do this.

babyalive (babyalive), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

(Actually, I had no business kidding Geir above, considering how monochromatic and overwhelmingly WHITE my own list is. I think many of 'em are in the same minor-key mode too, Aolian or whatever. I really wish I wasn't so inarticulate/ignorant about this stuff.)

Alphabetically:

1.Beatles, "Baby's In Black"
2.Buffalo Springfield, "Go And Say Goodbye"
3.The Byrds, "I See You" (among DOZENS of contenders!)
4.The Coasters, "Charlie Brown"
5.Funkadelic, "Good To Your Earhole"
6.Go-Gos, "Our Lips Are Sealed"
7.Poppy Family, "Where Evil Grows"
8.Rolling Stones, "Mother's Little Helper"
9.Yes, "Yours Is No Disgrace"
10.Neil Young, "Cinnamon Girl"

TJ Ghul, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

I like it when good singers harmonize with themselves via overdubbing. Buck Owens, George Jones, Prince, Elvis Costello and Todd Rundgren were all really good at this.

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Everly Brothers, "Cathy's Clown"
Fleetwood Mac, "Think About Me"
Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris, "In My Hour of Darkness"
Beach Boys, "Don't Worry Baby"

PB, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

Geir - if you haven't heard him, you should check out Louis Philippe.

As for songs, erm, maybe 5 random Turtles Songs ... ditto The Association (inc. You Baby and Cherish, respectively).

Jez (Jez), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

I don't have the energy to P X, but the best thing about Yo La Tengo is the harmonies. The way they sing the big numbers on "I Can Feel the Heart," I find it tricky to figure out where one voice ends and the other begins. (Maybe they're toggling between harmony and unison?) It's a creepy effect.

Derek Krissoff (Derek), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Beach Boys - "Heroes & Villains", "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring"
ABBA - "Head Over Heels"
Beatles - "Paperback Writer", "Taxman"
Queen - "Killer Queen", "Dear Friends"
Offering (Christian Vander's band after Magma in the 80s/90s) - "Cosmos"
Paul McCartney & Wings - "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five"
Fleetwood Mac - "The Chain"

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Holy crap I forgot to say:

Animal Collective - We Tigers
Talking Heads - The Great Curve
Paul Pena w/ The Persuasions - Gonna Move
Common w/ Cee-Lo, Bilal, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu - Heaven Somewhere
They Might Be Giants - Kiss Me, Son Of God
Funkadelic - Standin' On The Verge Of Gettin' It On
The Fairfield Four - Lonesome Valley (from the Oh Brother...? OST)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

This thread makes me wish I was way more familiar with gospel music!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit, and sacred harp/note-shape singing!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

this thread needs some bluegrass.

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

it's not a proper harmony, per se, but BFBF and Kim on 'Hey' by the Pixies deserves some kind of honourable mention somewhere.

Lee F# (fsharp), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

The Association, Under Branches

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

some bluegrass:

Stanley Brothers - "White Dove"
Bill Monroe - "In the Pines"
Old & in the Way - "Wild Horses"

Keith C (kcraw916), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

The Association - Cherish (as previously mentioned)
The Beach Boys - In My Room
ABBA - Slipping Through My Fingers (the harmonies in the chorus are so unexpected)
Amerie - 1 Thing (just that little bit of vocal stacking makes the whole track seem so lush after the bare drums)
The Left Banke - Walk Away Renee
The Mamas & The Papas - Monday Monday
Belle & Sebastian - Step Into My Office, Baby
Stars Collide - Cinnamon (or many things with Bertrand Burgalat's involvement)
The Brothers Johnson - Runnin' For Your Lovin' (simple, but really immaculate)
The Divine Comedy - Songs Of Love

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Daniel, exactly. Low have *so many* amazing examples of this though. Mimi is of course a goddess. Just think of stuff like "Embrace"!

I made a Muxtape with a "vocal harmony" theme, but I'll be damned if I can track down the playlist now.

sad-ass Gen Y fantasist (jaymc), Thursday, 9 July 2009 23:26 (sixteen years ago)

If someone could remind me of some of those mid-80s big-harmony songs, I'd be greatly appreciative. Like I said before, Journey (along with some hair-metal bands) is the template for this sound.

(I'm trying to remember what I should download from the Sony drop on eMusic, and this thread will help).

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 9 July 2009 23:29 (sixteen years ago)

I'm listening to some great vocal harmonies right now:

Better Days / Graham Nash

Turangalila, Thursday, 9 July 2009 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

Oh wait I think I found it (or some version of it):

1. Les Baxter and His Orchestra, "Moon Moods"
2. Beach Boys, "'Til I Die"
3. Kelley Polar, "My Beauty in the Moon"
4. Stevie Wonder, "Too High"
5. Steely Dan, "Peg"
6. High Llamas, "Checking In, Checking Out"
7. America, "Ventura Highway"
8. Cornelius, "Drop"
9. Field Music, "Working to Work"
10. Fleetwood Mac, "Rhiannon"
11. Midlake, "Roscoe"
12. Aluminum Group, "Rrose Selavy's Valise"

I think there was another version that had a Kings of Convenience song and a Free Design song.

sad-ass Gen Y fantasist (jaymc), Thursday, 9 July 2009 23:43 (sixteen years ago)

The Supremes - It Makes No Difference Now
The Supremes - How Time Slips Away (This may have had Adantes assist them)

They covered country songs earlier in their career and this was when Diana was much rawer and "soulful." Their voices have this interesting clash as if they are struggling with sharing the spotlight (as much like they did in real life). It's also strange how soul musicians and country musicians covered each other a lot during this time.

Thank you for this thread's existence. I'm such a sucker for these. Many great suggestions, already; I'll just add three:

Fleetwood Mac, "Second Hand News". When Stevie raises her voice over Lindsey's on the line "I've been tossed around enough"... good lord ...

X - "We're Desperate". Just the harmony on "some people give me the creeps" (and later, "our whole fucking life is a wreck!") can make my day.

Beatles - "Because". Because.

I always come back to "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" when thinking of these. That chorus is just so great, with that unexpected perfect fifth on the word "love"
