i really enjoy it. i'm still working on a longer explanation for my blog, but i'm pleasantly surprised by this one. certainly not the "return to form" some have claimed it to be, but nowhere near as horrid as others would lead you to believe. "Let There Be Love" is a fantastic Oasis tune, about the only one on the album that would hang with the '94-'97 peak stuff. i'm also enjoying "Mucky Fingers" more than i expected to. the best sign? the fantastic b-sides are finally back.

jonviachicago, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm looking forward to playing it again! Which hasn't happened with an Oasis album since, umm,

ok Heathen Chemistry. But before then, not since Definitely Maybe.

They're playing here (NYC) in under a month at Madison Square Garden....begging the question: who gives enough of a damn about them in the States anymore that they should be playing such a big room? Seriously, none of their albums since What's the Stor?... have made the slightest impact here, and that was full on DECADE ago.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

"I Can See It Now" is absolutely fantastic and trumps anything on the album.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Umm, what's/who's that from?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

i'm also curious to know where that song comes from. are you maybe confusing it with the "Won't Let You Down" b-side from the "Lyla" single?

i am still astounded that they sold out MSG, i always thought that the American public dumped and promptly forgot about them with the pop explosion of 1999.

jonviachicago, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

i listen to it and it gets better n beter so i'll keep listening - simply - nothing crap or annoying but nothing as exciting as "wonderwall" or "shakermaker".it sounds like a first album by a band yet to discover their sound

dameron ciaz, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

"I Can See A Liar" from "standing on the shoulders of giants"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

ahh, thanks for clearing that up mark. anybody have these and able to YSI them by chance? or does anyone know if they are slated for b-side status with the next single?

jonviachicago, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Bsides of the future, no doubt.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

There is a massive big poster at Maidenhead station.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I heard about four tracks in a record store yesterday, and it sounded pretty good. I haven't really paid attention since Be Here Now made me yawn.

Yeah, but they sold out the Garden in ONE HOUR in February, so maybe there are more hardcore fans that we think....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

How dare bands persist after their moment of glory and keep having fans! Only new groups and acts from this year are to be loved.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

I quite like all of their albums. "Don't Believe The Truth" is no exception.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

I reserve love only for bands that don't yet exist.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Futurist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

I bet Ned calls Nick a futurist. Xpost honest.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha.

I'm sure I read somewhere that there's a smaller room at MSG, and which was supposed to be the one that Oasis were playing.

Ben Dot (1977), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

No, I'd heard it was the full-on venue, but if someone wants to correct...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

They still hold a nice place in my heart from the summer of britpop way back when. I really like the new record, by far my fav since What's the Story. I always thought they had it in them if they would stop being so lazy with the songwriting.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

That would be what they used to call the Felt Forum back in the day (I saw the Fixx and General Public play there), then they changed its name to the Paramount Theatre (named after Paramount Chicken) at Madison Square Garden

I'm pretty sure they're playin' the big room, though, no?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Arent they playing the Hollywood Bowl? Or am I crazy?

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

Yup, they are.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

It's not that big, is it? I bet Oasis will make some reference to boxing to show how hard they are (as I have just done).

I prefer Carnegie Hall.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Thursday, 9 June 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

I always find Oasis albums perfectly acceptable even if I never listen to them after the initial two weeks of owning it. Certain albums that get praise are no where near as good as some would have you believe and the ones that get slagged off are not as bad as they would have you believe. Just depends what your expectations are and I'm sure this new one is no different. Lyla is dull but a couple of tracks I heard on the radio were ok. Not going to buy it though. To be honest I'd be perfectly happy if they never made another album but every 2 or 3 years they just came out to do the press for one, the interviews being more entertaining than any music they make.

mms (mms), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:04 (twenty years ago)

I checked the website. THey're playing the big room at MSG, not the theatre. Who knew?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 June 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Oasis isn't showing to be sold out at MSG either. My guess is they had the Theater At Madison Square Garden (which maybe seats a couple thousand) originally booked, then moved up after the sellout.
