TS: SLEEP vs HIGH ON FIRE

(btw, is it just me or does high on fire = volume one, OM = holy mountain+jerusalem?)

you know what band i cant quite get into? sunnO))?)!@) - nothing ive heard has really grabbed me - i think what distinguishes sleep for me is that their riffs are fast enough to actually be recognizable as riffs (distinct from earth/sunnO)))), but the riffs are still slow enough to have the lumbering-stoned-behemoth-ogre-effect (distinct from high on fire). i hate to say it this way, but sleep is fast enough to actually ROCK, but slow enough to be super-super-heavy.

As for Sleep, I love Dopesmoker but I never listen to it.

The Om album is one of my faves. I can't stop listening to it. When the drive to work ends before one of the songs I just keep driving around the block til it's done.

ehh. i love sleep but i'd go with high on fire - better songs, better riffs.

i'm reversing myself. after extensively relistening to the sleep albums i think sleep is better than high on fire (i was listening to much more of the latter when i posted).

I haven't heard much of HoF but from what I have, I think I prefer Sleep. But as others have mentioned above, I think Om is better then both of these bands.

HOF over Sleep by a hair, and both slay OM.

SLEEP rules all. The best damn doom band not called Black Sabbath. Dopesmoker is cool, but Holy Mountain is just monstrous, brobdignagian, without peer or equal. Very nearly as good as Master of Reality, Paranoid, etc. Combines High on Fire's raspy punk attack with Om's lidded krautmetal and easily betters both. When it's playing, it's the best damn rock & roll record in the world.

I need that Sleep's Holy Mountain lp reissue for sure.

Ok I think this new High On Fire album may just be my album of the year. Can't wait for Relapse to send my vinyl. This album just bludgeons. Some of the songs are definitely the doomiest they've done.

Went to see some local metal a couple months ago, and among three bands playing, there were four HOF T-shirts. I was wearing one too, which make me feel creepy.

CD out in UK today, USA next tuesday. Wonder when Relapse will ship the vinyl pre-orders. Can't wait for mine.
This album is killer. It gets better each listen. Matt Pikes vocals have definitely improved.

i find high on fire sorta tiresome. great live, but tiresome on record. i listened to "surrounded by thieves" yesterday as well as "jersualem" and "come my fanatics" and for some reason pike's tireless riffing just put me off after about 10 minutes.

maybe at the end of the day i'm just not very heavy metal?

Probably, cuz I don't find it tiresome at all-I like working out to it and getting high to it. Serves a lot of purposes.

high on fire is some get pumped up and punch dudes in the mouth and/or clean your bathroom music.

Legendary stoner rock band Sleep split in 1998 after two hugely influential albums and members went on to form underground heroes High On Fire and Om. They reform for two performances at ATP as a world exclusive that will never be repeated.

They will perform the album Holy Mountain as well as selections from Dopesmoker and more.

I finally got a copy of Sleep's Holy Mountain. I guess a record store in New Orleans bought up all of the cassette copies of the album. My buddy picked one up on tour and when i told him that I'd never heard it he gave it to me, said he was going back to NOLA before the end of the year, anyway. He was really taken with the store, can't remember the name of the place now. They only charged three bucks for the cassette.

I'm sure they will kick much ass in this reunion.

Fantastic news, I was listening to Holy Mountain this morning.

Oakland, CA metal band HIGH ON FIRE has announced that it will be forced to miss this summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival as front man and guitarist Matt Pike enters treatment for alcohol rehabilitation. The award winning power trio (also featuring drummer Des Kensel and bassist Jeff Matz) will put its scheduled touring plans on hold indefinitely as Pike takes the necessary steps towards regaining his health.

"High on Fire would like to thank everyone involved with the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival for the opportunity to be a part of this year's tour," said the band in a statement. "We regretfully will have to bow out as our friend and bandmate begins his recovery, but very much appreciate having been asked to be a part of this summer's festival run."

I love Sleep and OM rule but I've somehow managed to bypass High on Fire almost entirely. It is time to remedy this.

BBW would be all time classic for "Brother In The Wind" alone - not many bands can ruminate on mortality and the death of a friend while also pummeling your skull into dust.

Cor, Steps of the Ziggurat is immense. As with Sleep, you get the sense Pike is enjoying the shit out of the music.

I vote Sleep if it’s a choice between physical states.
