TS: SLEEP vs HIGH ON FIRE

im listening to HoF's blessed black wings for the first time right now, and while it's certainly good, it doesnt come even close to any sleep stuff. i hear really awesome things about HoF, though - am i missing something? SLEEP, in a landslide for me.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Vs. OM?
I choose Om.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

ehh. i love sleep but i'd go with high on fire - better songs, better riffs. i'd also take OM over sleep when it comes to the extended doom mantra workout stuff on jerusalem.

(btw, is it just me or does high on fire = volume one, OM = holy mountain+jerusalem?)

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

oh man - i hadnt even HEARD about OM. that sounds totally great!

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Get it. It's great.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

High On Fire are easier to like than Sleep. Faster, harder, better drum sound, better guitar solos (because they're born of better riffs). And it's too hot, and I'm too lazy these days, to pursue difficulty. So HOF for me, thanks.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I like High On Fire, still i prefer Sleep's heaviosity. And I don't even smoke dope.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

whazzis OM?

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Bass + Drums from Sleep, new record
Here's a review

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Sleep better in theory; High on Fire better in practice. I love 'em both.

ng, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

I LOVE THEM BOTH...BUT ID GO WITH HoF.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

thats weird that you say it that way, pdf! i find that sleep speaks DIRECTLY to my hot weather self - that feeling of being totally baked and covered by the sun/humidity. HoF is too busy to give me that same feeling, and so far (more time required, im sure), none of HoFs riffs stand up to anything on holy mountain or dopesmoker/jerusalem.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

i just $l$ked OM - report forthcoming!

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

after 30 seconds, its clear to me that this OM album fucking rules.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

High On Fire puts me to sleep. Sleep gets me high.

- (smile), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

that feeling of being totally baked

haha pete

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

I go with Sleep, doods. The second HoF album is pretty weak. At least, the production makes it sound like it was recorded in Matt Pike's asshole. I haven't heard the OM record, but saw it at the store a few weeks ago. Was tempted, but wanted to hear what people said about it first. Anyway, Sleep is great. Holy Mountain is even better than Jerusalem! (Which I think I am going to put on right now, even though I have no buds.)

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

ian, it is GREAT.

you know what band i cant quite get into? sunnO))?)!@) - nothing ive heard has really grabbed me - i think what distinguishes sleep for me is that their riffs are fast enough to actually be recognizable as riffs (distinct from earth/sunnO)))), but the riffs are still slow enough to have the lumbering-stoned-behemoth-ogre-effect (distinct from high on fire). i hate to say it this way, but sleep is fast enough to actually ROCK, but slow enough to be super-super-heavy.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Om - "Variations On A Theme"

Amon (eman), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

The production on the 2nd HoF album does blow. The new album is amazing, it's not as doom-y as the other two, but it's got big riffs. Production is grebt too.

As for Sleep, I love Dopesmoker but I never listen to it.

The Om album is one of my faves. I can't stop listening to it. When the drive to work ends before one of the songs I just keep driving around the block til it's done.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

i as yet unconvinced by the Om disc. i've only listened to it a couple times, but it doesn't do it for me in the Sleep way. It seems more stagnant, but not meditatively stagnant like sunn's good stuff (00 void).
Jerusalem is really the only one out of all of these (Sleep, Om, HOF) that i think i really need. i wish i had gotten to see Sleep live, because HOF live is like a thousand times better than on cd.
verdict: Jersalem>Dopesmoker>Holy Mountian>High on Fire live>Volume One>>>Om>>all High on Fire cds

deru, Thursday, 9 June 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

typo: i am as yet unconvinced...

NAZARETH!

peter smith (plsmith), Saturday, 30 July 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

It's really hard to choose between HoF & Sleep. The OM album is really good too.
Dopesmoker is prob the best album but I think I prefer HoF to the other Sleep albums apart from maybe Holy Mountain which is on a par with Blessed Black Wings. The 1st HoF I definitely prefer to the other remaining sleep albums.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Saturday, 30 July 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

for me, its dopesmoker > holy mtn >= variations on a theme >>>>>>>> all HoF; havent heard jerusalem or volume 1.

peter smith (plsmith), Saturday, 30 July 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

You just need to hear the first two High On Fire discs. The new one's not as good.

New albums pretty damn great!

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

Fucking fuck. Money = water.

Bob Standard, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

ehh. i love sleep but i'd go with high on fire - better songs, better riffs.

i'm reversing myself. after extensively relistening to the sleep albums i think sleep is better than high on fire (i was listening to much more of the latter when i posted).

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Friday, 17 August 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't heard much of HoF but from what I have, I think I prefer Sleep. But as others have mentioned above, I think Om is better then both of these bands.

Mark Clemente, Friday, 17 August 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

HOF over Sleep by a hair, and both slay OM.

Bill Magill, Friday, 17 August 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

SLEEP rules all. The best damn doom band not called Black Sabbath. Dopesmoker is cool, but Holy Mountain is just monstrous, brobdignagian, without peer or equal. Very nearly as good as Master of Reality, Paranoid, etc. Combines High on Fire's raspy punk attack with Om's lidded krautmetal and easily betters both. When it's playing, it's the best damn rock & roll record in the world.

Bob Standard, Friday, 17 August 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

I need that Sleep's Holy Mountain lp reissue for sure.

Trip Maker, Friday, 17 August 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

Ok I think this new High On Fire album may just be my album of the year. Can't wait for Relapse to send my vinyl. This album just bludgeons. Some of the songs are definitely the doomiest they've done.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 17 August 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

I'm glad to hear that. I am really looking forward to that.

Bill Magill, Friday, 17 August 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

If I was vas djiferens, I could say something about how wolves will rip the flesh from their bones if it doesn't destroy Christian babies. As things stand, I'm just looking forward to it.

Went to see some local metal a couple months ago, and among three bands playing, there were four HOF T-shirts. I was wearing one too, which make me feel creepy.

Bob Standard, Friday, 17 August 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

CD out in UK today, USA next tuesday. Wonder when Relapse will ship the vinyl pre-orders. Can't wait for mine.
This album is killer. It gets better each listen. Matt Pikes vocals have definitely improved.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 28 March 2008 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

Chances of a Sleep reunion are even more remote now sadly.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

is it just me or is his guitar going WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 02:52 (eighteen years ago)

that cartoon makes matt pike look like a humorless bastard, which i'm pretty sure he's not, because of "yeti" and "razorhoof". also the last time i saw them (SBT tour) he introduced his songs like this:

"this song's called yeti, it's about the yeti"
"this song's called razor hoof, it's about a deer"
"this song's called speedwolf, it's a ... diiiiiirge ... a dirge for the fallen brothers"

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 02:56 (eighteen years ago)

Somebody got a translation? pike is anything but humorless, he's fucking great.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

translation? i don't speak french but i think it's just

"if sleep were to get back together"

"they would break up again!!"

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

from wikipedia:

In March 2008 OM recorded a 7" for Sub Pop records. The song "Gebel Barkal" is the first to feature new drummer Emil Amos.

!

69, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

i'm excited to hear it. i made note of the release on the om/pilgrimage thread, btw

Mark Clemente, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

ah i didnt see!

69, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

i find high on fire sorta tiresome. great live, but tiresome on record. i listened to "surrounded by thieves" yesterday as well as "jersualem" and "come my fanatics" and for some reason pike's tireless riffing just put me off after about 10 minutes.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

maybe at the end of the day i'm just not very heavy metal?

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

Probably, cuz I don't find it tiresome at all-I like working out to it and getting high to it. Serves a lot of purposes.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

high on fire is some get pumped up and punch dudes in the mouth and/or clean your bathroom music.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 10 April 2008 03:35 (eighteen years ago)

Legendary stoner rock band Sleep split in 1998 after two hugely influential albums and members went on to form underground heroes High On Fire and Om. They reform for two performances at ATP as a world exclusive that will never be repeated.

They will perform the album Holy Mountain as well as selections from Dopesmoker and more.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 31 October 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

I finally got a copy of Sleep's Holy Mountain. I guess a record store in New Orleans bought up all of the cassette copies of the album. My buddy picked one up on tour and when i told him that I'd never heard it he gave it to me, said he was going back to NOLA before the end of the year, anyway. He was really taken with the store, can't remember the name of the place now. They only charged three bucks for the cassette.

Trip Maker, Friday, 31 October 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sure they will kick much ass in this reunion.

Oakland, CA metal band HIGH ON FIRE has announced that it will be forced to miss this summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival as front man and guitarist Matt Pike enters treatment for alcohol rehabilitation. The award winning power trio (also featuring drummer Des Kensel and bassist Jeff Matz) will put its scheduled touring plans on hold indefinitely as Pike takes the necessary steps towards regaining his health.

"High on Fire would like to thank everyone involved with the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival for the opportunity to be a part of this year's tour," said the band in a statement. "We regretfully will have to bow out as our friend and bandmate begins his recovery, but very much appreciate having been asked to be a part of this summer's festival run."

BBW would be all time classic for "Brother In The Wind" alone - not many bands can ruminate on mortality and the death of a friend while also pummeling your skull into dust.

DEATH PUPPET (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 7 October 2018 21:05 (seven years ago)

Cor, Steps of the Ziggurat is immense. As with Sleep, you get the sense Pike is enjoying the shit out of the music.
