Son Volt "Okemah and the Melody of Riot"

Okemah has leaked onto Soulseek.

Anyone else heard it yet?

On one listen, it's much better than "Straightaways" and "Wide Swing Tremolo".

Liking it better than "Terroir Blues." The guitars are back with a vengeance. And there's some killer melodies.

i've got it and going by a few listens, i'm tempted to say it's his best since Trace. there are plenty of lyrical clunkers, but Farrar sounds like he's getting his ass kicked into gear by the new lineup. though it really doesn't sound very different from the old lineup. if i didn't know otherwise, i'd say it was the same old Son Volt. nice guitar sound all the way through--sounds pretty loose, in a Crazy Horse-kinda way.

I'm actually intrigued. Can't wait to hear it. Jay's needed a kick in the rump since Straightaways.

And what's a Son Volt album without lyrical clunkers?

is that really the title?

Yeah, that's the title. Check out the freaking rekkid cover:

I actually like the album cover! At least it's not their usual super boring cover...looks like the woodstock poster kinda.

hmm...they really lost me after the first album, but Tupelo was once one of my favorite bands...I might have to check this one out...

Are the Boquist bros. still in Son Volt? (or back in Son Volt?)...I thought I heard that.

The original line-up was supposed to record this record. Something happened along the way, though.

The band on this record was:
Jay Farrar (vocal, guitar, piano, harmonica), Dave Bryson (drums), Andrew Duplantis (bass, backing vocal), and Brad Rice (guitar). Guest musicians include Eric Heywood, John Horton, and Mark Spencer.

I don't be knowin' any of those dudes...are they from any other bands?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

I know Andrew Duplantis... He's a fantastic guy and an incredible bassist. Bands he's played with? Here are a few:

Alejandro Escovedo
Bob Mould
Tia Carrera
John Dee Graham
Meat Puppets

He also has a new solo record out called "only funny the first time." Duplantis rules. Let's start a fanclub. -chadly con Queso

Alejandro Escovedo

sweet....I've seen some stellar Alejandro shows....hm...could I be getting excited for a Son Volt album in 05? perhaps...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

add Richard Buckner to that list. Duplantis has backed him up on a few tours as well.

Dave Bryson is in Canyon, Brad Rice played with Whiskeytown (hey who didn't), John Horton with Mike Ireland among others and Mark Spencer with the Blood Oranges.

Re "something happened": The original lineup asked for fairer terms of employ than the had the first time around ... when nixed they declined the invite.

Oh and favorite clunker from this one: "I'm thinkin' about the ozoooone..."

What Pretenders song am I thinking of when I listen to "Bandages and Scars" off the new record? HELP!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

fwiw, Mark Spencer accompanied Jay Farrar on his recent set of live dates, and absolutely ripped.

Wow, this record is really good. Love the first song, where Jay actually tells us he's "thinking about the ozone."
