Stuff I've found great (so far).

Barbara Morgenstern - Fjorden
Michaela Melián - Baden-Baden

Also, Quarks seem great, fun pop, but I only have the odd song here & there.

They have a lot of compilation/sampler type things too!

Raumschiff Monika, Musik Fürs Wohnzimmer, Santa Monika, Monika Force and a live label DVD 'Monika's Himmelfahrt/Monika's Ascension'

Should I look into any of these at sometime in the future?

In the catalouge I think I can take or leave Masha Qrella, Cobra Killer and Figurine seem a little too twee on the material I've heard so far... this is all based on some downloads, but no full-lengths.

This thread is also my roundabout, not wishing to shout about every single CD I buy way of saying, that the "4 Women No Cry" compilation I just bought is absolutely kicking my ass. SO good. Please talk about it!

Seconding Baden-Baden as well as their comp from earlier this year, plus 4 Women No Cry -- definitely agreed it's an excellent album. The Gudrun Gut reissue was a kick as well. I've been appreciating them more and more the more I listen to their work and love writing about it, since so many of the artists on the label have such elegant takes on electronic and techno.

Yeah, I've slowly begun to be aware of her influence behind the scenes in Berlin since watching the 'Berlin Digital' DVD. I even bought one of her WMF mix cd's (Ocean CLub) but it frustratingly came with the wrong disc. Oh well.

What is "The Gudrun Gut reissue" though?

The only thing I have of her actual music is Gut/Humpe - "Butterfly (Ellen Allien Remix)" on her Remix Collection. And whatever Malaria! songs Chicks On Speed decided to cover.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

also agree on baden baden - terrific stuff. "tesri" by lippock / morgenstern is great as well, toning down the dryness of the to rococo rot sound with some humour and fun. the 1st track is one of my favs of the years.

One day I'm going to get round to finding the whole Gudrun back catalouge just for the hell of it. Ned I guess you're taking about Moabit & the Malaria! reissues?

I don't know it too well so far though :(

I read there's a second volume of the "4 Women No Cry" in the works? Google is failing me on finding out any more.

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I heard the same about 4 Women, don't know details yet. Gudrun is touring with Barbara in America :) The "Move Me" single is excellent.

I still haven't convinced myself I need a third BM album :(

Even though I loved the lead-off single (and started the thread). I need to sort that out really.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 01:54 (twenty years ago)

I really didn't like it initally! But it has grown a great deal on me lately.

*initially

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 01:58 (twenty years ago)

I will get round to hearing it... I've just been getting picky to extremes lately.

lawd... busy first half is 2007

can you say any more of this Ned?

I regret, still not picked up new Babs, or new 4 Women No Cry comp, but will probably get new Gudrun regardless. Yay! for German renaissance women of a certain age... they get me kinda hot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdLzlvv5SR0 (see? HOT!)

fandango, Friday, 23 February 2007 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

Moody, mysterious, a tribute record of sorts (most of the songs are specifically noted as being inspired by other musicians), almost kinda makes me think of Siouxsie in Creatures mode meets early Laurie Anderson (sonically and vocally), but it's hardly limited to that.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

was really disappointed with 2nd "4 Women" album.
loved the gudrun "move me" 7" though, so have high hopes for an album.

I liked 4 Women Part 2. If you can find the Eglantine Gouzy record ("Boamaster") it is also worthy of your time. Gudrun Gut run over by a reindeer also sounding good.

I wish they'd release more stuff by Mico/Mieko Shimitzu... The tracks on 4 Women No Cry, as well as the couple of others by her that I've heard are really good, but her solo material seems to be sparse and hard to find. AFAIK her album catalogue consists of one CD released in Japan in 1998, and one self-published(?) that came out in 2006. I managed to locate a used copy of the former, but I can't find anyone on the Internet that would sell the latter.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 10:22 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah. i think i only ever heard i see a soul, on that sampler. or maybe heard some others but just in passing. that one song is so great, strung out and slowed down.

john-claude van donne (schlump), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 12:15 (fourteen years ago)

This comp has a cool track by Shimizu released under her Apache 61 drum'n'bass moniker. The sleeve notes also have a mini bio of her that says she's been involved in music since the late 80s, but sadly her solo releases seem to be few, and most of them are Japan-only, I think.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 12:49 (fourteen years ago)

Just got the Apache 61 album in the mail, and it's a pretty awesome piece of experimental drum'n'bass/electro/whatever. Elastic and hard-hitting, kinda like Squarepusher without the IDM wonkiness. I really wish Monika or whoever would put out more of her music, she deserves to be known wider.
