Seriously, because I want to know. I just ordered it, based on the comparison to Fun House somebody made in a thread a while back.

THIIIIIIIIS much!

Seriously, it's raucus, funky, aggressive and just great on every level. I bet it was PDF who compared it to Fun House, no?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if I would compare to "Fuhhouse" exactly, but it is pretty great nonetheless

chris besinger (chris besinger), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

dude, i cant wait to half-own this album.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

somebody compared it to "fun house?" weird. i guess i can hear it, tho, in a way. it is a great record, for sure.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Right, no, I don't think it's going to sound exactly like FH, but the comparison was made based more on the overall effect & singularity of the sound. Records that try to sound exactly like the Stooges are rarely worth listening too b/c the imitators almost never have enough groove.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

i feel like the sax on "fun house" is more deliberately gutbucket. "nation time" is a bit different, and certainly less nihilistic in many ways.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

"funhouse" wants it more

chris besinger (chris besinger), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

deliberately gutbucket:

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

no that's "deliberately poor fashion sense"

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

whateva it's all about juez

xpost

I don't think it was me compared it to Fun House; it sounds more like a ramshackle Afrika 70 to my ears. But it's a killer album no matter what references you apply to it.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

it's pretty fucking heavy, that's fer shure. one of the few free albums with serious groove. if i ever get my free jazz balls back, i think i should give this another spin

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

it sounds more like a ramshackle Afrika 70

that sounds just as good to me! (possibly better)

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

dude it isn't a free jazz record!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

well it's pretty fucking squanky

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

maybe i'm thinking of Trinity? it's been a while since i've listened to either

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Trinity is much skronkier and harder to take.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

this is really good but yeah, hardly free jazz - more loose funk to me

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 9 June 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

It starts with an audience call and response, viz.:

McPhee: "What time is it?"
Audience: "NATION TIME!"

How can you not love an album with a beginning like that?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

weird, i ordered about ten albums that were recomended in that thread as well. am expecting this one any day now.

ppp, Thursday, 9 June 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

this album inspired my stycast at stylus (hence it's name), which has since only been interviews (the first installment was intro music by chinna smith, mcphee's nation time, sharrock's brute force, and cliff thornton's huey is free.

damn my new job; i wish i could do more podcasting!

one year passes...

Just been listening to that 2 track If You Have Time album he did with Konstruct last year, it has this great spoken intro and is a perfect little recording that wouldn't sound out of place on Big Fun. He did a few great albums last year - the one with Corsano and the Survival Unit one as well. I am not familiar with any "peak" McPhee but plan to check some out.

two years pass...

Local record store guy recommended the Superior Viaduct reissue recently, loving it a lot!

Nation Time is so good. Still crazy that it was recorded at Vassar!
Need to get my hands on the complete session set: https://www.discogs.com/Joe-McPhee-Nation-Time-The-Complete-Recordings/release/5161214
