it's cool...some omissions...

i've just barely skimmed it, but what the fuck is UP with choosing Strength, BY FAR THE WORST SONG on Let's Go Scare Al over Boys WIll Be Boys, She's Fucked Again, or Heavy Metal Boys?

I would like to publically ask for an explanation on that one from a CP staffer. For real.

more thoughts to come later....Cool idea though.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

woah...no Information Society too..would have thought that would've made it...

also, left off Sicbay's "Who Wrote the Night?" prolly the best Mpls rock song of past 10 years....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

"hitting the wall" by the cows, classic tho

chris besinger (chris besinger), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

word...that was cool.

also, no Rifle Sport...Hammerhead....the Odd...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Nothing by The Jets????

(NB: I have no idea if I'm being serious or not.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

oooh "street fuck" by odd would have been good, the list does have "slack" by nnb tho

chris besinger (chris besinger), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

No "Urban Gentleman" = CRIME!

asl, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

plus points for mentioning "knife in the marathon" by breaking circus (which I believe was written and recorded when they were still in chicago, but whatever), which is awesome song and not even the best breaking circus song (that would be "takes a hammering")

chris besinger (chris besinger), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

"Chemistry Set," not "Love is the Law". Huh.

Ryan Pitchfork, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Those Terri Sutton blurbs are obfuscated beyond belief.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

before i even clicked on it i thought "i bet they'll get matos to write about prince" and then i looked and...aha!

geeta, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

The process of coming up with this list was about the least centralized I've ever seen. Dylan Hicks asked a bunch of dedicated local music fans to submit lists of favorite tracks, and kind of deduced some consensus picks from that as far as artists. But when it came to songs, at least in my case, he left it up to the writer to choose, so you can blame me for any choices I wrote about.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 9 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

By the way, Information Society and The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group are both in the sidebar headlined "How could you idiots forget..?" Though I chose a different Ruiz song:

http://citypages.com/databank/26/1279/article13397.asp

I also threw 8 more R&B tracks and 22 more hip-hop tracks on my blog:

http://babelogue.citypages.com:8080/pscholtes/2005/06/08

And Corey Anderson added his own picks at his blog:

http://babelogue.citypages.com:8080/canderson/2005/06/08#a526

We both cited the Jets.

No Walt Mink? Not bitching, just surprised...

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 9 June 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

The lack of Walt Mink was a definite surprise. And Matt's comment about "Strength" was OTM. I really don't think "All the Right Reasons" is the highlight of the Jayhawk's career either.

Also missing:

- something off Polara's s/t debut
- kinda surprised there was no Balloon Guy or Smattering

don weiner (don weiner), Thursday, 9 June 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

I only take comfort in the fact that "Strength" and "All the Right Reasons" are a true fan's maybe eccentric choices. I'm not a die-hard fan in the case of either band, but mine would have been "Boys Will Be Boys" and "Settled Down Like Rain." Balloon Guy/Smattering might have almost made it into the "I can't believe you idiots forgot..." category, for all I know, but we were allowed a limited amount of choices there, too... Me lobbying Dylan to include an obscure mambo track bumbed them out, probably!

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

'the crusher' is amazing.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Smattering did make it into the "How Could You Idiots Forget?" list, which also includes the Breaking Circus tune mentioned above (the blurb notes that the song was recorded before Bjorklund's relocation to Minneapolis.) The omitted tune that I most wanted on there was the Elektra's "Dirty Old Man," but a lot of worthy stuff was left off, and perhaps some unworthy stuff was included. As Peter said above, in editing the piece I let the writers go with their hearts as to song selection, which resulted in some quirky choices. For the Jayhawks, I probably would have picked “Let the Critics Wonder,” “Blue,” or “Waiting for the Sun.” “Time Heals” was my favorite Gear Daddies tune.

dylan (dylan), Thursday, 9 June 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

I am now burning with the desire to hear "Croton-Hormon" right now. And "Curiosity". Preferably mashed up.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 June 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Big mistake on the sidebar list: We Like It Here (Songs about Minnesota):

JORDAN BY BIG BLACK! YOU FORGOT!

Also: WHERE IS ARCWELDER!!!!!!! I DEMAND A RECOUNT

ALSO "ANNA VOOG IS SLEEPING" BY RANK STRANGERS!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Wait... no Superman Curl?!?!!

Ryan Pitchfork, Friday, 10 June 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I think we'd all as soon forget "Jordan, Minnesota," Big Black included.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 10 June 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

I think we'd all as soon forget "Jordan, Minnesota," Big Black included.

Yeah but it should've been on the list...it WAS about Minnesota.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

I love Arcwelder live, but admit they're a blind spot for me on record. TCPunk.com was also irked at the ommission...

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 10 June 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Anna Voog ( she was in the Blue Up? at one point, right?) is one of those interesting people who never was an interesting songwriter. And I saw Arcwelder a half dozen times and never could get into them.

Hats off to "Time Heals"--even if it was cheesy when everyone threw ciggies at Billy, it was still kind of awesome. For the Jayhawks, I'd pick "Settled" or "Blue", though if they would have ever released their live version of "Sixpack On the Dashboard" (the slow one, not the fast version that came out on the "Big Hits" comp.

don weiner (don weiner), Friday, 10 June 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

(oh wait, that was "Jesus In the Driver's Seat" that was on the Big Hits From Mid-America comp.)

don weiner (don weiner), Friday, 10 June 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Anna Voog ( she was in the Blue Up? at one point, right?) is one of those interesting people who never was an interesting songwriter.

Agreed. I was talking about a song by the Rank Strangers (local band with local producer Mike Wisti)...it was called "Ana Voog Is Sleeping" written as a sort of weird tribute/dis record about her webcam site, she was one of the first people I remember who had a website where you could watch her daily life, etc....amazing song actually.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Time Heals is a great song...the "you shouldn't smoke them goddamn cigarrettes" part of the chorus I think you'd have to be heartless not to love...

But, again on the Gear Daddie's "Strength"...I was more displeased because that song actually represents all of Zellar's WORST traits: his half-assed Springsteen glutteral vocal moments, the po-faced "oh woe is me"....he's better when he's being charming and sorta sad/happy/wry little slices of smalltown Austin MN....his solo records are mostly overbearing crap, and you can see the seeds of his downfall in "Strength"....The Daddies were great when they felt like just regular small town Joes, they really dissected life in Southern MN (and I know cuz I grew up like 20 min down the freeway from Austin in a small town called Blue Earth) like nobody else could (not that anyone else ever wanted to or tried)...but they were their worst when they were straining for "big rock" meaning and importance....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

What does Rollerderby magazine have to do with cocktail culture?

mike a, Friday, 10 June 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Not a clue, my man, not a clue.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Dude, did you read Rollerderby?

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 10 June 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

I've never even seen this magazine. Does it have something to do with the CP list? I'm confused.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)
