RUN THE FUCK AWAY

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

why?

T. Weiss (Timmy), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

Hey... ja-ja-jaded...

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

if you're not jaded now, you will be. working with people sucks. lowest common denominator. and you're appetite for new music will multiply exponentially meaning you get bored of new music faster and you spend all your checks on music.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

it depends on what the store is like, but working at record stores can make enjoying music as a fan more difficult, especially if you're selling music you like to people like you. you run the risk of getting soured on music, other people, and yourself.

its looking like either this or a bowling alley at this point..its only for the summer btw

T. Weiss (Timmy), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

xpost
i.e. see response #1

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

its only for the summer btw

Ah.. go for it then!

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

is it a good bowling alley?

dan (dan), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

yeah if it's only for the summer, you'll have fun. i was "only supposed to be working here for, like, six months tops" ha ha.

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

is it a good bowling alley?

it's decent. but i'd probably used my checks on bowling then.

NEVER GIVE ADVICE. people expect you to be psychic barometers of their secret shitty desires and invariably they come back and complain to you about it.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

haha i mean advice about what records to buy although "never give advice" is probably the sort of life lesson i'll end up telling my grandkids.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

what sort of record store? a sad, dingy used LP place? a mall store? Virgin Megastore? Amoeba?

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Gear - it's a good store. i'd rather not say the name in order to not nix my chances.

T. Weiss (Timmy), Thursday, 9 June 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

haha wait, where do you live. we're hiring right now.

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 9 June 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

Los Angeles

T. Weiss (Timmy), Thursday, 9 June 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

you only know more than the boss in areas he doesn't know anything about

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 9 June 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

I disagree on the "don't give advice" front, but only if someone asks for it. Otherwise you look like every other stupid know-it-all clerk who we all (presumably) don't like much.

Hutlock (Hutlock), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

i love it when the staff at my record shop give me advice! i've bought some of my favourite cds that way. and i've never been back to complain. although i am honest in my opinions. but i think they like that too as it helps them know what i like so they can recommend other stuff in future. the people in my record shop are very nice though. also i'm a super-regular customer so they all know me, i would never think of it as them being know-it-alls.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

timmy, whatever you do, don't work for penny lane. that's where i worked in la. but it's prolly not even a cd store anymore with all the porn dvds they sell

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

Just apply to Amoeba and be done with it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

I used to give advice, and to mixed results. This one girl wound up not liking Steve Earle, and another guy wound up bored by Ethiopiques 6, but this one kid I recommended X's Los Angeles to came back a year later and told me it had changed his life, so in the long run, who cares if those other people are stupid.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 June 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

Give advice, but don't try to make anyone feel stupid or embarrassed for liking what they like.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

smile,yes,agree

trash tramps, Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

Advice for the interview: be enthusiastic and cute and emphasize how much you like music and people AND HELPING PEOPLE WITH MUSIC and say that you're organized and neat and blah blah blah.

It got me my retail job. A year and a half later, I AM FULL OF HATE.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

yeah for customer service smiling during the interview is key, be very polite, talk about helping people. nobody gives a shit what kind of music you listen to as long as they know you can use the lookup database they've got in the store.
