Blondie - Mucho Mistrust?

Mucho mistrust? Are these rerally the lyrics to Heart of Glass? If so, what does it say about latino influence in Blondie lyrics? Did it arrive via Puerto Rican hip-hop? Or are the words really 'mutual mistrust'? Or is it something completley different?

I need this for 'work', I'm not just messing about. The hard of hearing community's enjoyment of Brooke 'sister of Kevin' Shields vehicle 'Endless Love' depends on this.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

It was definitely "mucho mistrust."

How do I know? Because Bothwell's leading punk band of the late '70s, Raw Deal, rehearsed it a few times and took great pleasure in altering the lyric to "Marcello mistrust." How I chortled.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

I always thought it was a reference to the NME Lone Groover cartoon strip from around that time.

"Mucho Mucho Mucho marvey, I got a chick from the Yugoslavey"

(I'm serious)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure you'll find it's really 'mush on my truss'. Possibly a messy hernia reference, I'm not sure.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

I remember the later days of the Lone Groover, when "he" started taking the piss out of punk. The hapless Tony Benyon was shown the door shortly thereafter.

Whatever happened to J Edward Oliver who used to do the awesome EC Ryder strips for Disc and Music Echo back in my days of youth?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

"Marcello mistrust" doesn't even scan. Remind me not to buy that Raw Deal box-set.

Peter and I imagined 300 goony answers to this before noon. How nice to have it sorted out so swiftly.

(xpost - may have spoken too soon)

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

Thank you, Marcello.

This thread has already taken on a completely unexpected life of its own.

I wish the film would do the same.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

I think it was some time after punk that Tony Benyon went. I remember one of the lastish strips was a joke about headbands (i.e. bands on your head) and Pronto or Tonto replied "Oh I dunno, I quite like the Teardrop Explodes..."

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

I thought Ray Lowry was doing the cartoons by that time (are any of his NME reviews up on the Web yet? Talk about proto-blog...).

Raw Deal also did an ace version of "Nut Rocker." They retitled it "I'm Gonna Pogo All Over Your Head."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm fairly certain there was some time when they both were doing strips.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

Ah, how nice...the J Edward Oliver website.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 9 June 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

Ah how nice is right. I remember his stuff from my Record Mirror years. I did see his name on a comic strip once since, but nice he's still doing his ting.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 9 June 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

IIRC Th' Lone Groover actually released a record.... in fact I suspect I may even have a copy....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 June 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

It was an e.p. on Charly records. Supposedly recorded in 1971. More than that, I don't know.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 9 June 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

I know I had a "Th' Lone Groover" comic book thing called "How To Be A Rock Star".

My favourite Tony Benyon cartoon was of two hippies one of whom is admonishing the other for wearing T-shirt with a band / musician name on it:
"Hey man, don't follow leaders"
"You're righ man - Dylan said that"
"Yeah man, Dylan's the greatest"

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 June 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

yes, I have/had that one.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 9 June 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

I lent mine to a guy I was in a band with in 1984, along with my copy of The Unforgettable Fire, and I never saw either of 'em again.

I kinda miss that book.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 9 June 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

Did it arrive via Puerto Rican hip-hop?

Did such a thing exist in 1980?

i always think she's singing "i'm riding high, i've fallen for the jewish lie"

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Wait, what is she singing?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

whenever i read one of marcello's posts i become convinced that (a)england is on another planet and (b) i never want to visit there.

i always think she's singing "i'm riding high, i've fallen for the jewish lie"

Bizarre coinkydink: according to some real estate agents at my mother's firm who helped sell one of their former apartments, evidently Debbie and Chris are big collectors of Nazi memorabilia.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

iiiiiiiiiiinteresting.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

also, they named their band "blondie." as in BLONDE HAIR!

Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out had a heart of glass
Seemed like the real thing only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

In between what I find is pleasing
And I'm feeling fine, love is so confusing
There's no peace of mind if I fear I'm losin' you
It's just no good, you teasin' like you do

Once I had a love and it was divine
Soon found out I was losing my mind
It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind
Mucho mistrust, love's gone blind

Lost inside adorable illusion and I cannot hide
I'm the one you're using, please don't push me aside
We coulda made it cruisin', yeah
Coulda made it cruisin', yeah

Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out to be a pain in the ass
But I was so blind
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

Yeah, riding high on love's true bluish light, ooh, oh

latebloomer: Pain Don't Hurt (latebloomer), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

dude, we've already established they're nazis. case closed.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

love's true bluish light???

How have I lived with this song for 15 years without having any idea that was what she was singing? I thought it was love's sick and foolish lie or something.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Wouldn't Chris Stein be jewish, tho'?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Err... 25, not 15. Damn time flies.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

evidently Debbie and Chris are big collectors of Nazi memorabilia.

does chris stein still consider himself jewish? (xpost)

metal assembly (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Nick, as I said to my co-worker, I'm pretty sure I could reproduce that song phonetically to a great degree of accuracy, but I had never until yesterdy given the words so much as a passing thought.

I would like to think this is the hallmark of a truly great pop song.

I don't think they are nazis.

I think there was Puerto Rican hip-hop, or at least Puerto Rican 'roots' of hip-hop, i.e. timbales an' ting 'breaks' played over and over again.

I should know, I organised hundreds of block parties when I was chief entertainments organiser in the ghetto.

one year passes...
Look, if Rapture isn't the most amazing song of humankind, then...what?
