This is a lyric from the track heat – ‘state senators, life twirls, most sell out, like a dread with a white girl’. Explain please.
Rastafarianism is a black culture. When you see dreadlocked dudes with white girls that’s like they going against what the dreadlocks purpose was. The dreadlocks was a symbol of black love and the black people getting to a certain level. In America weve got a lot of dreadlocked dudes and all you see them with is white girls. I don’t think theres anything the matter with somebody loving somebody from another race but its almost a stereotype that if you’ve got dreadlocks you go out with a white girl.i just feel like, as black men, we do have to be aware that, yo, every time we step out with some woman its setting an example for our daughters and its also representing something for our mothers. If you cant really love your own, how can you really love others?
So you don’t agree with mixed relationships?
I don’t disagree with them. Its just that ive been around blak girls who say ‘I only date white men’. Ive been around black dudes who I see only be with white girls. Is that a lack of self love? To say ‘I only deal with these type of people’ has gotta be a problem.

People got their choice. Im not telling them how to live their lives. I just tell them what I think about and what I feel about certain situations. Dealing with having sex with a white girl is something I have encountered and im not acting like white girls and other races are not people. We all people: children of god. But our race has been damaged. Sometimes to get back up to the level of respect and love, you’ve gotta stick with your own for a minute and build a certain amount of strength and community within yours so that other people can respect and honour traditions.

I think the title of this thread kind of mis-quotes him, doesn't it? He never actually said those words. All he said was that when the interviewer asked him if he'd ever dated a white woman he said no, and when he asked him if he'd ever slept with one, he admitted he had. The way the thread title mangles that makes it sound like he makes a regular practice of it.

All I'm saying is that anyone who has made up their minds about an entire group of people (AKA making huge blanket statements about their ability/inability to please you emotionally) has a mental block. It seems awfully closeminded to say that you would NEVER date someone outside of your race. What healthy or compelling reason is there to say that with finality? My problem is that Common seems to think that it's ok to make large judgments about a black man based on 1) the race of his girlfriend 2) his haircut.

So, Common walks down the street, sees a black guy with a white girl. Based on this information, he makes a judgement about the black man's attitude toward his own race. That's shitty.

I'm in an interracial couple, and I really don't like the idea that someone thinks they've got me pegged because of my girlfriend's skin color.
