Why is it that people like Art Brut, again?

I'm not getting it.

They write nice tunes.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 9 June 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

And they're funny.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 9 June 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

i don't like them one bit

That One Guy (That One Guy), Thursday, 9 June 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

Steev - you are not alone. Dude's voice makes me physically angry.

darin (darin), Thursday, 9 June 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Probably the same reason people like The Fall.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Exposing ambitious careerists as charlatans since 1986. (East, Thursday, 9 June 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

But that doesn't imply that anyone who likes The Fall might like Art Brut, too.

Their lyrics are cool.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

WTF? Darin, if the sound of a guy basically talking makes you "physically angry" (?) I suggest buying some really tight headphones and killing your television!

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

I like Art Brut. They're clever. And I like the chorus on Move to LA

WillS, Friday, 10 June 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

"Formed a band" is ace, if a joke. I think I could easily have it playing on repeat for three hours while I was working on something else.

Guayaquil, Friday, 10 June 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

eh, the album's all right.

There can never be enough stick-thin self-conciously "wacky" Britpop revivalists with shit fashion sense in the top 40.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 10 June 2005 08:59 (twenty years ago)

nabiscothingy - It's not the talky part that bugs me. It's just that the music seems lazy and tossed off while the vocal delivery feels smug and rubs me the wrong way. I know I should try listening again to develope a more informed opinion, but I'm kind of dreading going there.

one of the best put-downs/fuck-yous i've ever heard in my life is from their recent NAG NAG NAG single that goes:

"I’m nothing to my peers, but envy and hatred/
but how many girls have *they* seen naked?"

YES!! fantastic.

Judging from the samples I've heard, I'm kind of looking forward to the new disc (Art Brut v. Satan). I'm sure there's a 1000 records focusing on the music industry itself, but I guess I've had a yen for one (something scathing and new), and I think -- lyrically -- this might fit the bill. Sample lyric: "I can't believe I've only just discovered The Replacements. How have I only just found out about The Replacements? Some of them are nearly as old as my parents." Lead singer's voice is an acquired taste, I'll admit, and the music is pretty by-the-numbers. But the lyrics are an evil delight.

FWIW, I love The Replacements.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 20 April 2009 21:03 (seventeen years ago)

I thought the second album was a weak Xerox of the first and I thought I'd have little use for anything else by this band, but the preview tracks I've heard have me actually looking forward to it.

listened to it on luisterpaal, wasn't impressed. music is boring, lyrics are generally embarassing

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 20 April 2009 21:18 (seventeen years ago)

What did you think of the band before? I mean, are the lyrics embarrassing in relation to the earlier albums? Or do you just find them embarrassing to music in general?

69, Monday, 20 April 2009 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

I just glanced at a few reviews: BBC and Times Online. They hate the disc for precisely the reasons I'm looking forward to it. Who knows? Maybe the disc will be a poor attempt to deliver on the idea/theme (or maybe the idea/theme of the disc won't really be what I'd hoped for, anyway).

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 20 April 2009 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

i enjoyed some of the songs off the first album, downloaded the second but only listened a few times and didn't get into it. can't tell if the band is doing something different or if i'm just tired of them. it sounds like art brut, but instead of thinking the lyrics are funny or clever it just seemed like he's stretching for topics. also i wish the band would play faster or he'd change up his lyrical delivery, i've come to hate how he divides words and phrases to deliver the syllables/words on beat so there are big gaps in between

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 20 April 2009 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

That makes sense n/a, I was just trying to feel out whether you or not you liked their earlier work. I definitely felt a big sense of diminishing returns with the last album and wasn't expecting much from a third at all.

suggest banh mi (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 20 April 2009 21:37 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't heard the album and don't know anything about it other than what I've read about it on this thread but I can't help noticing the lack of originality in these details. I mean, Heavenly made an album called Heavenly vs. Satan. They Might Be Giants already wrote a song about the Replacements and Half Man Half Biscuit (who I'm sure Art Brut already get unfavourably compared to) have already written dozens of amusing songs about the music industry. That's not even touching on what I assume is once again their usual totally familiar indie guitar sound.

just found out, Frank Black producing hmmmm!

Dr Morbius, Monday, 20 April 2009 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, but Black's presence doesn't make the band sound different they did on their debut record. (Again, judging by the samples)

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 20 April 2009 23:55 (seventeen years ago)

new lyric I kinda like: "I fought the floor and the floor won"

Very positive review on Pfork today - http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/12902-art-brut-vs-satan/

I loved the first album but It's A Bit Complicated was very patchy and I wasn't overly taken with Alcoholics Unanimous when I heard that. So I might leave this unless I read a load of rave reviews. Which seems unlikely.

In theory I should hate this, but I really love it.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 03:47 (sixteen years ago)

I think the latest one is a big improvement on It's a bit complicated which was a slight let down after the debut. It captures the energy of the first album and I have to agree with the Uncut review that said they might be a one trick pony but it's a great trick.

Eddie's learned how to sing according to the below press release:

Art Brut return with their new studio album Brilliant! Tragic! on May 24rd. The first single "Lost Weekend" is released the week before on May 16th.

Again produced by Black Francis but unlike its predessesor Art Brut vs Satan, which was recorded in under two weeks, Brilliant Tragic's writing process was a lot more intense than usual, as Eddie Argos explains "with the last album we met up every couple of months and wrote three or four songs. This time we got together in the second half of the year and wrote whenever we could 2 or 3 times a week. We had more time in the studio this time too (about a week more) so Black Francis had time to teach me how to sing." and "I'm very proud that I sing on it. Only took four albums to start singing, not bad."

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

Just heard the debut and am quite taken with it. MES fronting a Britpop band, that's alright! Took a few songs to accept his vocal style but I'm there.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 29 April 2011 16:31 (fifteen years ago)

I'm curious what his improved ability to "sing" will sound like on the new one

I'm right there with you, KP! I only have the debut, I'm hoping the singles will trigger a deeper interest in their subsequent albums.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 23:37 (thirteen years ago)

I was absolutely mad/bonkers/crazy about their first album, and even saw them live, but I barely remember a damn thing from any of the subsequent albums.

― Johnny Fever

I know a lot of people would agree that the first album is all you need but to me only needing one album by them would be the same as saying you only need the first Modern Lovers album and nothing else Jonthan Richman ever did. The third album is almost as good as the debut in my opinion. The other two albums aren't quite as great but are solid records.

For me they're my favourite band of the last few years by quite a long way. Amazing live and one of the few bands I love that give me that thrill of being a teenager and obsessed with a band so much it's all I can think about* This best of would be an ideal introduction to the band as the song selection is absolutely spot on. Formed a Band might be the song they'll be remembered for but it should be a song called Demons Out from the third album.

*That band was Mansun by the way
