I think you should just play the files at random without looking at what's what until there are particular tracks you find yourself liking. Blind jury!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 10 June 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

Colin Meloy - sings Morrissey.
is there "last november killed a monster in the shape of this child "

rachel tweedy, Friday, 10 June 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

they all look pretty horrible except for the skip spence one. so, listen to that one first.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 10 June 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

That's quite a sweet Damien Jurado album. And the Jesse Sykes album has more slow-burning depth than a lot of stuff from last year.

Sean M (Sean M), Friday, 10 June 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

The Engineers album is in my Top 10 so far this year
The Postal Service - Excellent, top album
The Radio Dept. - Average
Skip Spence - Excellent
Teenage Fanclub - Average
Dios - Crap
Clearlake - OK

Don't think I've heard any of the others

actionjackson, Friday, 10 June 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

Skip Spence definentely pick of the bunch

Seuss, Friday, 10 June 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

Yep, Skip Spence and skip the rest.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

Good:
Clearlake - Cedars
The Radio Dept - Lesser Matters

Great:
Skip Spence - Oar

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

I'll rep for Ken Stringfellow all day every day, but Soft Commands was a kinda weak album, only two really great songs (tracks 2 and 9), Touched was a much better record.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Andrew Bird is worth a listen, ditto Clearlake

DJ Mencap0))), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

i really like the nada surf and postal service albums.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

Engineers good, Clearlake OK, the rest meh.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

Damien Jurado - Where shall you take me

Matinee is very charming. :)

Ludo (Ludo), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

I really liked Ben folds and Damien Jurado, Hayden's album is awful.

Eva van Rein (Gaia1981), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

after listening to oar you may be well past caring about the rest

b b, Friday, 10 June 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Def listen to the Clearlake and Postal Service albums. Clearlake's got a nice twist to a Britpop sound.

JC-L (JC-L), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

I really liked Soft Commands actually, his show here earlier in the year was fab too.

Mil (Mil), Friday, 10 June 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

I should have bought 2,000 mojos instead of the Engineers album.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 10 June 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

Ben Folds Five is quite light hearted and piano driven, something to listen to if you're in a good mood, I think. Dudes got a good voice too, like an extremely good wedding singer.

Don Rowlando (Sam Rowlands), Friday, 10 June 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

Colin Meloy - sings Morrissey
haven't heard but I'm a sucker for his voice, I imagine it might turn you off if you hate whiny/wine-y voiced singers

The Postal Service - Give Up
excellent pop

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 10 June 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

also I remember Damien Jurado boring me but I don't know if that was the album I listened to.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 10 June 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

I have heard and enjoyed the Postal Service and Dios records. The Death Cab one is ok too. Haven't heard the others. There.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 10 June 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

postal service - Nuked for 2 min on HIGH, it makes a nice ashtray. meh.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 11 June 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

I love Andrew Bird (Swimming Hour, esp.), and Skip Spence is fantastic. Nada Surf and the new Ben Folds...blah.

John Justen (johnjusten), Saturday, 11 June 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

the radio dept. album is pretty damn good

That One Guy (That One Guy), Saturday, 11 June 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

best ones are radio dept and engineers. after reading this thread i don't think i'll be bothering with skip spence. the clearlake album is a bit of a bore and i really liked its predecessor

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Saturday, 11 June 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

The Radio Dept - Lesser Matters: Love this record.
Skip Spence - Oar: One of my all time faves.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 11 June 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

The only thing I could recommend here in good conscience would be Stringfellow. I think he's pretty talented from what I've heard, though I don't have any of his records.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Saturday, 11 June 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter - Reckless Burning

This is an awesome album.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Monday, 20 September 2010 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

Owen Pallett, Emeralds and Jack Rose (RIP) all set my world on fire. The latest Thee Oh Sees disapointed. Matthew Dear is interesting. Peter Gabriel is the same old immutably cuntish bag of shite he always was. On a similarly prejudiced without hearing note, who the fuckination desires a live MF Doom album? Pilot Talk has its moments but too few.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 20 September 2010 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

You are not missing a thing (well, I have not heard White Hills).

Fruitless and Pansy Free (Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 01:50 (fifteen years ago)

booka shade and woods albums are surprisingly resilient. they sound nice and are super easy to get into.

laurie anderson is for laurie anderson fans only

guilty simpson and ikonika are forgettable

matthew dear is interesting but i suspect not particularly lasting/good

wooden shjips is pretty cool. kinda like lo-fi silver apples??? you will impress people with this album. hippie lo-fi is way cooler than beach lo-fi

you might think emeralds and oneohtrix are interchangeable, but you would be WRONG. emeralds is basically a (pretty good) tangerine dream imitation, but oneohtrix's record has SOUL. one of my favorite albums of the year.

gil scott-heron has a good album. pretty straightforward and slightly insubstantial but it's polished as all heck.

ceo is ok. i would just listen to the tough alliance instead.

that's all i've heard from this list

fennel cartwright, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:29 (fifteen years ago)

Torche record comes out today -- Owen's record is solid

markers, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:30 (fifteen years ago)

cloudland canyon album is pretty good, just listened to it for the first time today. way less krauty than the last one, more reverby

pig on wheels (electricsound), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:31 (fifteen years ago)

hippie lo-fi is way cooler than beach lo-fi

Well considering beach lo-fi is just about the lowest standard ever...

Thanks for all the input, btw!

Among the stuff I've heard, best on yr list is Owen Pallett and Curren$y.

jaymc, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 06:18 (fifteen years ago)

that's not where i'd start with richard youngs tbh; it sounds to me too much like RY plays beachgaze or w/e.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 06:21 (fifteen years ago)

The Silver Mt Zion record is great. So is the Youngs.

margana (anagram), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 07:33 (fifteen years ago)

The Oh Sees record is solid, though just filling in the gaps of what they've done already- this time with a 16 minute boogie, a Duane Eddy twanger, etc. The vocal arrangments are, if anything, eerier and more abstract, more "instrumental" than they've been before.

I found the Ikonika disappointing. It's got some really good moments, but nothing that tops the Hyperdub 5 tracks, and more than a few of the songs don't gel.

Same for the Booka Shade- some fine stuff, but some of it I actively want to skip over.

bendy, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 09:40 (fifteen years ago)

loved the books' disc, especially cold freezin' night.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 10:25 (fifteen years ago)

cloudland canyon album is pretty good, just listened to it for the first time today. way less krauty than the last one, more reverby

this sounds good. softly noisy, with hooks underneath the squall.
