Is "Freak Like Me" the only #1 single to sample another #1 single?

I think it might be.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

Bob The Builder 'Mambo #5'?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

"Angel" by Shaggy samples "The Joker" by the Steve Miller Band. (Thanks, everyHit!)

Ark Hopping (avoid80), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

was 'every breath you take' no. 1? puff diddy then.

N_RQ, Friday, 10 June 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

NickB (NickB), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Doctorin' The Tardis/Blockbuster.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

rocknro-oll hey rocknroll

N_RQ, Friday, 10 June 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

over in the U.S. we have a couple (off the top of my head)

Puff Daddy - "I'll Be Missing You" / Police - "Every Breath You Take"
Mariah Carey - "Emotions" / Emotions - "Best of My Love"
Notorious B.I.G. - "Hypnotize" / Herb Alpert - "Rise"
Shaggy - "Angel" / Steve Miller Band - "The Joker"

Doctorin' The Tardis/Blockbuster.

did the writer - gary gliter go number one

fred schneider's chrysler, Friday, 10 June 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

Not with "Rock & Roll Part 2" he didn't (that peaked at number two) but he did have three number ones with "I'm The Leader Of The Gang (I Am)," "I Love You Love Me Love" and "Always Yours."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Isn't "Freak Like Me" a cover?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

No - modified bootleg of Tubeway Army backing track and Adina Howard vocal line.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

although strictly speaking it was a cover of the Girls On Top "original" bootleg single.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Two near-misses from the U.S.: Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" (Sly's "Thank You") and "If" ("Someday We'll Be Together") both narrowly missed the top spot.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

Did the writer - gary gliter go number one

"Doctorin' The Tardis" was based on three different songs. "Rock'n'Roll Part 2" didn't hit #1, neither did the theme from "Dr. Who", but "Blockbuster" did.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

As I believe I said about ten posts ago.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if either were #1 singles, but what about "You Can't Touch This"/"Superfreak"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 June 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

'u can't touch this' didn't go number one cuz it wasn't actually a single

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Harold Faltermeyer & Crazy Frog?

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

LMC vs U2 ("Take Me To The Clouds Above") and Whitney Houston ("How Will I Know")

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

LL Cool J - Ain't Nobody, maybe?

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

I don't think "Emotions" actually samples "Best of My Love," just is reminiscent. ("Best of My Love" not cited in the songwriting credits.)

Though Stars On 45's big hit doesn't count, since the track copied songs rather than sampling them, it's an obvious precursor to "Freak Like Me" in that it copied a bootleg, the musicians playing the song bits that the boot had sampled.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Friday, 10 June 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

"U Can't Touch This" was certainly a single, but it didn't go UK #1. And "Superfreak" _certainly_ didn't.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 10 June 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

"Ready Or Not" and "I Don't Wanna Know" are number ones based off the same sample, but the Enya original didn't go to number one.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 10 June 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

I thought the vocal in Freak Like Me was Bootsy Collins' I'd Rather Be With You. That said, I don't know who Adina Howard is.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 10 June 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

neither James or MC Hammer went to #1 in the states, shockingly enough.

I don't think "Emotions" actually samples "Best of My Love," just is reminiscent. ("Best of My Love" not cited in the songwriting credits.)

Intentionally reminiscent = sampling for the purpose of this thread, I'd say.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 10 June 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

How about Parliament - Aquaboogie --> Dr Dre - Dre Day

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 11 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

I thought for sure there would be a #1 that sampled Flashlight but that was the best I could do.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 11 June 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait, here is the connection I was looking for: Atomic Dog --> What's My Name.

Of course these are all #1s on rap or dance charts rather than the overall chart, so I don't know if that matters.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 11 June 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

What about "Justify My Love"?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 11 June 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

So the original "Freak Like Me" wasn't a #1, but "Are Friends Electric" was. Is it okay if I think that's bizarre?

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 11 June 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

The orginal 'Freak Like Me' was rubbish though - however, Tru Faith & Dub Conspiracy's 2-step remix was the bomb.
