They sound exactly like Interpol. I'm beginning to think this is this third Interpol album, released under a pseudonym.

Lights
Munich
Blood
Fall
All Sparks
Camera
Fingers In The Factories
Bullets
Someone Says
Open Your Arms
Distance

I'll upload some tracks in a few from the debut album, The Back Room, which leaked a few days ago. They aren't terrible.. but.. I dunno. I can't really bring myself to like them, primiarily because they sound so much like Interpol.. it's like an Interpol parody band. And they sort of seem like ingenuine (OH NOES I'M A ROCKIST) scene hoppers...

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

I was so sure this was about actual editors.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

The singles were nice and the album's nice enough, I guess, but it just kind of lies flat and says "appreciate me." And I can't.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Nice cover

Is "ingenuine" a word?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Is "ingenuine" a word?

Apparently not. I always thought it was... what would be the correct word to use?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

The vocalist seems like a midpoint between Paul Banks and Ian Curtis that makes me question my earlier belief that they don't sound that alike, but also with an odd North-Midlands-ish pronunciation of words like 'you' ('yheeeuuuwww').

They're quite good live but I suspect this is mostly to do with the rhythm section, and that they're probably a bit too into attempting Big Anthemic stuff to be really interesting.

They apparently live in the same town as me but I have never knowingly seen them or sold them groceries, which would have allowed me to interrogate them on their influences. "Four fourteh nine, mate -like the CHAMELEONS, do you?"

M Annoyman (Ferg), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

They can't sound like Interpol as much as The Departure do. From what I've heard they're quite good, but I'm getting a little tired of this whole thing now.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Why, why do I like 'Munich'?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

They definitely ound more like the Wedding Present. Alright, crossed with Interpol.

No, it isn't.

zeus, Monday, 22 August 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

I prefer Johnny's last observation.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

And I don't think it's true either. Antics is a good record.

zeus, Monday, 22 August 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

I am glad for you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

Is there a band called The Freelancers?

OK I love these now. It isn't better than Antics but it's bloody good all the same. I really wasn't that impressed on the first couple of listens but I've been caning it hard in the last few days. They piss all over The Departure at any rate.

randomlurker, Thursday, 19 January 2006 22:48 (twenty years ago)

They ain't great but they ain't the worst neither, they're just boring. Personally I think that record labels need to interview bands and if they mention interpol or chameleons and wear black they get a slap. Preventative measures to prevent this kind of thing must be put in place. Oh yes.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Haha, my thoughts exactly. Shame the rest of the album is about as interesting as a sock drawer.

Louis Giomblechett and his kerayzy friends (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2006 22:51 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

I'm liking their new one a lot.

StanM, Thursday, 24 May 2007 09:31 (nineteen years ago)

i really dug a few of the non-single tracks on the debut. and the stereolab cover is less interesting than it really could have been, but it's certainly a very different vibe than the original

electricsound, Thursday, 24 May 2007 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

they're less interpol than the prosaics (RIP) were

electricsound, Thursday, 24 May 2007 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

Hopefully not too much like Interpol at all.

Interpol are like Franz Ferdinand, only without the good tunes.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 24 May 2007 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

Err, no they aren't.

baaderonixx, Thursday, 24 May 2007 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, they are. Influenced by early 80s postpunk, rather bleak, sounding like Martin Hannet produced.

But then Franz Ferdinand have those great melodies and great catchy choruses in addition. Which makes them stick out from the rest of the bunch.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 24 May 2007 10:57 (nineteen years ago)

i read yesterday that they were a wishy-washy coldplay-lite band til the day they decided on a total stylistic volte-face to grab a bit of the pot--post-punk thingy. this makes me like them much less. i still think blood and munich and all sparks are great songs but the new stuff's going in way too hard for the stadium indie jugular. v2008 headliners, you watch.

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 24 May 2007 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

Sounds like they used to be better before then.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 24 May 2007 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

Coldplay to Interpol isn't exactly what I'd call a 'stylistic volte-face', either way

acrobat, Saturday, 23 June 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

where the fuck did this style of song writing come from. quite bit then duh duh duh duh thwacking of instruments then quite bit then more duh duh duh and maybe a hooky anthemic bit at the end. it was yellow wasn't it, or is it u2 or even you made me realize or jeez it's horrible. nasty distorted noise.

acrobat, Saturday, 23 June 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

Yellow. Yellow is the root of all evil.

I hate Interpol but I really like these guys. Hmm.

HI DERE, Sunday, 2 September 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

did all this happen in england?

RJG, Sunday, 2 September 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

Uh dude, then give Interpol another re-listen. Or better yet, just scrap it all and go buy "Unknown Pleasures".

Stevie D, Sunday, 2 September 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

did all this happen in england?

Yeah, basically I saw videos for Edtiors, Kate Nash, Axwell and that remix of "Don't Mess With My Man" and went CD crazy before getting on the plane.

I really, really, really don't want to listen to Interpol again. The album I bought by these guys basically feels like all of the stuff Interpol took from Joy Division mixed in with awesome Floodland bombast.

HI DERE, Sunday, 2 September 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

Aren't Editors like the biggest band in France now, currently?

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 2 September 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

The album I bought by these guys basically feels like all of the stuff Interpol took from Joy Division

Is this a joke? Are you yanking our chains with this whole "No rly I like EDITORS!!" shit?

Stevie D, Sunday, 2 September 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

So basically everyone hates them, then.

HI DERE, Sunday, 2 September 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

Okay I can see why everyone would hate them based on the slow song, ugh.

I'm just going to go around to every venue where I talk about music to put the phrase "Ian MacCulloch fronts Mission UK" next to my name in as many places as possible in relation to this song

far too much asshole flesh (DJP), Thursday, 9 May 2013 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

The singer's tiny little ponytail bun is killing me. Let's let that trend stay buried by the sands of time, plz.

Song's not bad, though. I've always kind of liked this band, at least some of what they've done.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 May 2013 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

They're another band that gets the "OMG! It's Joy Division" brigade in a lather.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 9 May 2013 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

that would make more sense to me if every Joy Division song sounded like "Transmission"

far too much asshole flesh (DJP), Thursday, 9 May 2013 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

OTM DJP ..

think doran said this exact same thing re all the so called copy bands a few years ago ..

mark e, Thursday, 9 May 2013 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

that said, i think doran used 'love will tear us apart' as his example of a blueprint ..

re editors :

album 1 = good, album 2 = never heard, album 3 = electro album, and still not sure it works.

mark e, Thursday, 9 May 2013 20:01 (thirteen years ago)

Joy Division divided by Coldplay

PaulTMA, Friday, 10 May 2013 10:57 (thirteen years ago)

I still like the song Bullets, not heard anything else by them that's grabbed me much at all.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 10 May 2013 11:14 (thirteen years ago)

This new song is terrible btw, it sounds like it's by some Scottish U2 wannabes from the late 80s.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 10 May 2013 11:18 (thirteen years ago)

simple minds, then.

Elvis was a hero to most but he never her (ledge), Friday, 10 May 2013 11:24 (thirteen years ago)

Oi! I was thinking more about shite like Zerra One, but they were Irish of course.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 10 May 2013 11:49 (thirteen years ago)

"of course"

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 10 May 2013 11:50 (thirteen years ago)

Got a vague memory of these guys claiming to be taken aback by the vehemence of the Joy Division comparisons because none of them had ever heard a Joy Division song.

I'm certain that they're lying but I don't know whether that makes me dislike them more or less than if it was actually true and they'd never listened to JD in their lives.

Windsor Davies, Friday, 10 May 2013 14:08 (thirteen years ago)

My only real exposure to these guys is An End Has A Start, which I think is a perfectly fine album with a great title track.

I totally get the U2 evocations but due to the music my mind defaults to Wayne Hussey, aka "the goth Bono".

far too much asshole flesh (DJP), Friday, 10 May 2013 15:06 (thirteen years ago)

four years pass...

I am really, really surprised that DJP likes that record!

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 19:59 (eight years ago)

I don't think I've listened to the entire thing in about 5 years but I still stand by "An End Has A Start" as a song.

this iphone speaks many languages (DJP), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 20:21 (eight years ago)

I find the production on that album appalling, but then it is another Jacknife Lee hyper-compressed sonic abortion... there's autotune all over the vocals, too - not that there's anything wrong with using it sparingly, but you can hear it every time it kicks in and I don't think you're supposed to. Like, I don't think autotune-as-effect is the intention. It's like they couldn't be arsed to comp the vocals properly and opted just to over-tweak them artificially instead.

Also, while I'm sure they intended 'Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors' etc. to be these sweeping, emotional pieces of music, there's something about this record that means it doesn't really resonate in that way for me. I get the same feeling as I do from a Coldplay record, or something.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 20:44 (eight years ago)

I do like one or two songs from the debut, though!
