Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

I don't know any of these bands but they have great names!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

This isn't sponsored by the US Army. Sadly.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Are Junior Pantherz a grime crew?

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I want to hear me some Shalabi Effect.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

No, the Junior Pantherz are from Saskatchewan, where the only grime about is that diesely gunk that covers the tractor's engine.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Tell me about the booze.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Well, just beer... We haven't lined up the festival's booze sponsor yet.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Do yourself a favor and see Alan Astor.

Here's what Amy Phillips said about him:

Alan Astor is one of those people. Big orange hair, scruffy stubble. Low-slung baggy jeans with boxers hanging out, an open dashiki/robe-thing exposing a hairy chest, a tangle of necklaces, one of which looked like a Jewish star. I’m pretty sure he didn’t have any shoes on. He sang along with pre-recorded backing tracks (cornball glitchy ‘80s synth-pop wackiness) and occasionally played the saxophone. His voice and stage presence are very “I’m auditioning for A Chorus Line.” Lots of Christ poses and sweeping hand gestures. So bad it’s good.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 June 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Junior Pantherz are VERY GOOD. (is their new album out?)
Very Swervedrivery.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 June 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

I guess I meant if this is a "pssst, we're selling warm beer over there behind the big tree, take this drink ticket" or "here's your Molson cup, that'll be $7 please".

I see this festival has no respect for white-collar folks who can't possibly make it there for 6pm (thus no We're Marching On for me). I'm gonna have to finally see the Besnard Lakes after many failed attempts.

Serious question: how is this gonna compete with traffic noise in that area? I guess it's not a problem for a loud band, but I can't imagine how more delicate-sounding acts are gonna pull it off.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Katie Moore is a GREAT twangy singer-sonwriter.

Telefauna are nice.

Wolf Parade - duh.

Sean M (Sean M), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

I don't know that the traffic will be that bad right now, as the bottom half of St. Laurent is closed off, so I don't imagine many cars will be taking that route up... Also, there's an enclosed space, and there's a sound system too, so the delicate acts will transform into massive-sounding juggernauts of rock.

I think they're selling beer, yes, I don't think it's 7 dollars, though - last year it was $3? I dunno, beg me for drink tickets... I'll be behind a tree selling warm tabs of Ecstasy to Fringe Festival actors.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

White-collar people, in Montreal? They're here? I thought everyone has "media" jobs that allow for 2 hour, 3 glasses of wine lunches...

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

hahahahahaha! Like s1ocki!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

we'rer going to be there dude wtf

jones (actual), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm leaving the office right now, first act... Seperatist meadow-lovers Les P'tit Coucou, featuring members of Cowboys Fringant, who are (like) Quebec's biggest courier-du-bois band!

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

What now?

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

LET'S GET IT STARTED-AH!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Slutsky, we can break bread and put this foolish fake rivalry to rest! After all, you apologized to the young girl that you made cry and all.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Friday, 10 June 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

breezy, Thursday, 16 June 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Junior Pantherz are good? Swervedrivery?

Those are definitely two qualities I wouldn't associate with the band named after Sloan's worst song.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 16 June 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Dandi Wind are gonna be on Le Coq's label, and he just flew up to Montreal today for business after hanging out with me here in Baltimore for a couple days. so I assume he's gonna be at that show. what he played me sounded cool.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

What's Le Coq's label? S.L.U.M.? Is that Douglas Ko?

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Friday, 17 June 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that's it/him.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 17 June 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Supposedly he's putting out this record by this band I was in a year or two back, some post-humous nonsense, but I've only heard that from the Vancouver SLUM chapter... Do you have an e-mail address for him, actually?

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Friday, 17 June 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Did you catch any of the shows, Alex? I mean, the programming wasn't so stellar, but given the usual quality of Fringe musicians...

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Jay you dirrrty bastard, I hope you got my msgs - thanks for the hospitality, had an insane time w yr crew, I am in love with Mtl like crackhead love crack. Oh yeah I was over at Kayla's today taking digis of some of her artwork and she said she was flying over tomorrow, I showed her pics of us partying and she was like 'whoa, Montreal looks so fun' and I was like, 'word, your man Jay does it up right'. It's true, you put on such gangster shows I wanna strip buttnaked at all of them. OK so we're remixing yr shit as we speak, I'll send you FTP passwords n shit so you can hear em as they come to hand. I still can't believe we have the exact same birthday!

LeCoq (LeCoq), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

I caught Wolf Parade (of course) and sadly that was it. Besnard Lakes were playing too early and the weather was kinda shitty. But it was a really nice spot and had I caught some shows earlier in the week, I might have been tempted to just go back to chill and enjoy the vibe.
