Backpackers gone crunk - Aceyalone ft Pep Love "Give It Here"

man, in the same way that dancehall and grime have felt like there's not much going on, commercial hip hop has seemed pretty boring lately. but i heard a track on the local late night hip hop tv show Distortion to Static that made me search it down. it's on the Project Blowed presents Good Brothers album. it's got eastern drums, heavy synth with shouted chorus and talented MCs. strangely, i barely even recognize Acey's voice (i used to love the shit out of his first two albums). check it out, i think it's pretty fresh.

I still dont understand this "not much going in hip hop, grime or dancehall" thing.

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Sorry I'm not commenting on the song, I'm at work.

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

I can't listen to the link for some reason. Windows Media Player won't open it.

I still think people are unfairly down on this year. This sounds like it should be good.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 10 June 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

the only new hip-hop I've really been into this year has been the Bay Area rap Slump n Grind mix some ILMer pointed me to. altho the ideal environment for that stuff is either a) partying or b) driving and I haven't been doing too much of either lately...

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 10 June 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

I probably pointed you to that, and I've been bumping it a lot this year too...however, it pains me to mention it actually came out in '04.

I like the Beanie Sigel, C-Murder, Mike Jones, Z-Ro and Messy Marv albums. The Swishahouse 2k5 mixtape is good. What it Dew 2 is really good. And Jeezy's Trap or Die mixtape is great. These albums/mixtapes, plus a gang of singles, plus all the dancehall/grime/R&B, are reasons I like hip-hop and tangentially hip-hop related musics this year.

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh and that Edan album.

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

I mean, not that you have to like those albums or anything! I just dont think that hip-hop being weak this year is really fair. I do think that there haven't been any big critical hits so far because there's no david banner/outkast/missy (yet).

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

hmmm, y'know I never did get around to hearing that David Banner album...

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 10 June 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

knew this would be jaxon.

We SFers are predictable types haha.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 10 June 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

What did everyone think of backpackers gone grime

Perceptionists - Blo prod. by El-P?

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

I thought I am not going to listen to a record with Mr Lif on it.

Serious I can't stand him. (Alex in SF), Friday, 10 June 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah he is clearly the worst thing on it.

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

Is there an intrumental version of that record?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

There is conscious grime if you want to hear it.

(It's all about "gash"!)

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

knew this would be jaxon

haha. i started wearing a backpack again because i've got a scoliosis and my messenger bag prolly wasn't good for me

but deej, i said "commercial rap". all that stuff you've mentioned is thugged out, but underground

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

i started wearing a backpack again because i've got a scoliosis and my messenger bag prolly wasn't good for me

Yeah, and I wear my A shoes to correct athlete's foot.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

or because you're a euro raver

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

and that

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Mike Jones is about to go platinum! beanie sigel was on the charts too - I believe his latest is also his best-selling.

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Yeah what is commercial rap if "Still Tippin" isn't?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

i accidentally deleted the part that said "everything on there but mike jones"

it's actually the only one of those i've actually heard (own)

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Alex, have you listened to that Platicman/Mike Jones thing yet???

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Whats this?!

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Ah no. It's still on my desktop. I download the Roll Deep album last and got depressed.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Plasticman blending Crazy Titch vocals with Swishahouse and Mariah Carey instrumentals (and a bit of dubstep).

xp

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

It's...better than it sounds.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

This track - this whole album - is from 2003. Also, the first MC on the track is Ahmad, not Acey, which might be why you don't recognize his voice.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 11 June 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

Ahmad, from "Back in the Day"?

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 11 June 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Deej, which Swisha 2k5 mixtape do you mean? The one with the GTA-theme cover ('Final Chapter' I think)?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 11 June 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

That's the one, Jaxon.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 11 June 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

That's the one, milo.

deej.., Saturday, 11 June 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

New album drops in a few days...thinking about seeing him live, esp. he plays with an actual band. Not v. crunk though, some kind of homage to 50's-70's R&B/motown from what I've heard so far.
