From the TS: Kokomo vs. Margaritaville thread, this is my favorite description of the song, courtesy Brimstead:
margaritaville is immensely affecting, it's like a nauseous drunk update of "sitting on the dock of the bay". A real American touchstone of art about American alcoholism and bad feelings

More gold from that other thread:

My girlfriend and I were recruited by a friend of a friend in college to pour beer at a concert of his in Columbus one summer. It seemed like a perfectly fine way to earn a couple of bucks. But as soon as our bus arrived at the concert, it was clear that it was going to be a very bad day. Everybody around the stadium was already completely drunk, it poured the whole day and very soon the entire festival was a muddy mess that looked like Jello chocolate pudding. His fans were the scum of the earth. We had mud thrown at our heads. People repeatedly said “Give me a fucking beer, bitch” to my girlfriend. It was humiliating. Nobody cared. At one point, dozens of guys were lined up along a fence pissing on it. A guy with beer distribution came up to me and said I should wait until dark because “the ladies start squattin’.” It didn’t take until dark. Five minutes later women were openly peeing in fields. There was such a rush to get to the doors we couldn’t get to our bus to leave for another hour and my girlfriend was almost trampled at the exits. We made $55 for the whole day and weren’t given food for 14 hours.Obviously this was part of some scam the promoters do to get a honey pot to recruit college kids because those jobs are awful. On the bus ride back, everyone was livid with said college girl honey pot for how terribly we were treated all day. She cried. I still remember the moment when Jimmy Buffett finally came on stage with his shit eating grin. I was filled with rage. Obviously, he has little to nothing to do with any that stuff, but anyone who has so many (obviously not all) fans that are that shitty … it says something about them. Also, while I agreed with his politics (he was a big Dem donor) he had a knack for playing at the parties of horrible people. At least twice he played for billionaires who ended up in jail for fraud and the like. One was the Tyco guy with the gold shower curtain rings.

I vaguely remembered that Buffett had covered a Bruce Cockburn song. In fact, he covered six of his songs over several albums. This is a more than respectable rendition:

That story about the Jamaican authorities shooting at his plane with Bono and Chris Blackwell inside is pretty well wild:
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/02/arts/music/jimmy-buffett-bono-plane-jamaica-mistaica.html
“Some people said, ‘God, you could have sued them, you could have sued the government,’” Buffett said in The Spokesman-Review interview. “But I went, ‘No, it’s probably karma. We’re even now.’”

Yeah, I was thinking about that.
I actually love "Come Monday," it's the only Jimmy Buffett song I like. I once put it on a mix cd that I made for a bookstore I worked in, and came back from my day off to find two of my coworkers in a disagreement about "Come Monday." One of them said it sounded like Jimmy Buffett, and the other was arguing that it couldn't possibly be Jimmy Buffett because it was good.

It is kind of mind-boggling the business empire that seems to have stemmed from the song "Margaritaville".
What other pop songs outside of maybe something like "White Christmas" perhaps?
― earlnash, Monday, 4 September 2023 02:51 (two years ago)
Lily Dale, that is precisely why I spent ~20 years thinking it was by Gordon Lightfoot or maybe Glenn Campbell. I didn't have a gig today but I went to a show where my friends were playing and almost everyone did a Buffett song.
Earlnash, not quite a business empire but Blueberry Hill is a decently successful restaurant in St. Louis, sometimes associated with Chuck Berry. It's not, however, the restaurant in which he installed video cameras in the women's restroom. That's a different restaurant.

Hagar's "Mas Tequila"? (though I think he started the empire before the song?)

"Rudoph the Red Nosed Raindeer" would probably be another tune that the money was huge and probably the marketing around it crazy lucrative.
They would give away "Margaritaville" branded houses once a year on Wheel of Fortune, let alone all the trips to the various resorts.

Saw this as a suggested post on FB:
RIP to music legend and Miami Heat fan Jimmy Buffett. Here's Jimmy talking to SI about the time he was ejected from a Heat vs Knicks game: "It was a bad call. It still is a rotten call! John Starks clobbered Tim Hardaway. It was a close game. I just said you stupid, mother——, that is the worst call I ever heard. People yell all the time but he turned at me. Normally, referees do not make eye contact. So while he did not come over to me, he told the local security guard. By then the crowd was getting into it. Pat Riley was on the bench, asking ‘They are kicking you out of the game? Alonzo was like: Sit down. You stay there. I told the security guard. This is probably not a good idea. Then they came to me and said they would give the Heat a technical foul. So I said, okay, I’ll go."
