Is "What Have You Done" the best thing on it?
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)
Probably! But is has a lot of bass. It's a bit of a mess.
― admrl, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)
this the album from last year right? it is good. and yes, 'what have you done' is the best thing on it. we could have done with it coming out in 2005, really, but in light of the hot messes which are the roll deep/lethal bizzle/wiley albums (and i dare not think about kano) i'll take what i can get really.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)
last year maybe, yes.
― admrl, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)
I like Kano!
The MRK1 and Plastician albums are pretty good too. I'm beginning to think that grime producers have a better sense of how put together records than MCs. In fairness to Roll Deep though, the Rules & Regulations mixtape that isn't a mixtape was quite good.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)
i keep meaning to pick up guns'n'roses 2 - ruff sqwad were amazing when i saw them on sat, and they've always reliably come with the highest highs. must get plastician too.
i luv kano's voice. this is why i can't bear to conetmplate concepts like "kano ft. kate nash" :(((
the ny mixtape is awesome!
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)
kate nash? really? haha
― admrl, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)
this year also brings us "lethal bizzle ft. babyshambles"
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)
oh yes i nearly forgot "kano ft. damon albarn"
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)
Damon Albarn is big on road.
― jim, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)
I like both Guns & Roses mixtapes although both suffer from mixtape syndrome (i.e. weird choices for backing tracks and overlength.)
Has anyone heard the Ghetto mixtape? I used to love that guy.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)
i dont know if wiley has released anything on eski beat yet but i like this first beat from ice kid. dont talk and temp below zero arent bad either though not energetic, more like 80s pop-inspired slow murky grime. http://www.myspace.com/realicekid
maniac is really good. http://www.myspace.com/realicekid
― titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 4 October 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)
that plastician album is never coming out, i dont think.
Yeah it seems the 'great' lost grime-step album now doesn't it. Sadly it's not amazing. About on par with the Mark One/MRK1 offerings to my ears.
― Alex in SF, Thursday, 4 October 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, i think its probably wise it didnt come out. it just wasnt that good. bit too much on the dubstep side of things too.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 4 October 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)
it was fucking appalling.
sort of looking forward to putting on logan's best of tunnel vision wiley comp, i could never be bothered sifting through them all. still about 50 tracks long mind.
skepta's greatest hits is okay, although i think i might have put myself through way too much anticipatory flapping of gums for it to be anything but a letdown. anyone with fresh ears plz apply. had a boner for 'in a corner' for a while, esp flow dan's outstandingly malevolent turn, but not so much now really.
tinch, i dont think i said this b4, but you were right about that zumpi huntah riddim! i wonder why it wasnt a bigger deal. also, 'no qualms'
― r|t|c, Thursday, 4 October 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)
appalling is a bit harsh - it was just incredibly fucking boring, barring bad boy. sounded like a pretty weak dubstep cash in to my ears.
im looking forward to the best of TV too although even that seems too long. does anyone have the patience to get through that many songs that wiley did in between posting on rwds website? i thought the point of a best of would be to make it a bit shorter.
'skeppy's album is a let down, agreed. grime mcs try WAY too fucking hard when it comes to recording something.
the best grime beats out there at the mo are on the dubplates (ie snippets) section of dubplate.net. not that new now, but mostly still unreleased.
geeneus' rinse 01 mix cd is brill.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)
okay, incredibly fucking boring... appalling... were saying the same thing basically lol
― titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)
I am so behind that I was totally chuffed to pick up the Skepta best of and the Tinchy Strider album today (no way these would ever make it to Oz). I picked up the Geeneus mix but it seemed gluttonous to buy it as well. More information titch?
― Tim F, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)
haha dubplate.net, is that still going?! i think the last time i went there i was morbidly replaying new flesh vs horsepower productions or something. good times.
grime really is dead btw.
― r|t|c, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)
rinse 01 tracklisting - http://www.dubplate.net/Tunes.aspx?type=Grime&id=529
its basically bits of grime, dubstep (of course) and funky house that geeneus and zinc are making now. which could be any cd of course, but its mixed together quite imaginatively (skepta and plasticmans track intensive snare is really really dull and plodding on the album version but geeneus mixes it with some dubstep thing here and it sounds a 100 times more enlivened). one of the best post-garage comps ive heard in ages. makes me think of those old rossi b and luca mix cds. also helps cos geeneus can actually mix and has an ear for sequencing/selection. those old comps like heat in the street had some good tracks but bossman isnt much of a dj is he?
some of these beats are really good - http://www.dubplate.net/Dubplates.aspx?id=
i dunno about grime being dead but i read blackdowns column and if we are now saying ghetto is one of the best mcs in the scene at the moment, then things must be bad.

― max r, Friday, 5 October 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)
wonders pretty boring now IMO. jokers good, more dubsteppy to me though, partic in terms of tempo. i like that new japanese guy signed to hyperdub. not sure if hed dubstep or grime really but hes really good.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 5 October 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)
FWIW i think that older style of fast/frenetic grime production is totally dead.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 5 October 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)
this joker track 'y would i' is like old school timbaland/R&B synths gone dubstep. i like.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 5 October 2007 11:17 (eighteen years ago)
Geeneus "Old school" 12" I picked up this week is lovely. It lifts heavily from Bodysnatch "Just for U London", and features full on Mentasm/ Dominator synth action. Lovely.
I'm also still enjoying the 23Hz/ Numaestro track from earlier in the year "Galleon Dub".
Coming from a hardcore/ jungle/ d'n'b background, I'm not always convinced that grime/ dubstep is the evolution of the much vanted "'nuum" but tracks like these above make a reasonably compelling argument...
― Iain Macdonald, Friday, 5 October 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)
decided to listen to joker's myspace - all good and well but what the hell does the melody of "y would i" remind me of so strongly? something with female vocals i think.. possibly something indie.. someone help.
― jermainetwo, Friday, 5 October 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)
wait, i remembered - neither female nor indie - its the highfish and zander remix of the psychonauts' 'the world keeps turning'
