Grime in 2010

Grime in 2010 (feminazi), Saturday, 11 June 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

Anyboody heard the new Sord'd Tosser mp7? If you slow it way down you can begin to make our some lyrics, and a discernable unpleasant rhythm. Note: This is the first Grime single anybody in the states ever heard.

Have John and Edward Grimes ever thought of recording a Grime record?

The New Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

Quite amusing every time an American revives one of these threads to go lol, given the number of grime MCs who are actually, like, selling records and shit by now.

not new, i just heard it while rummaging through some gracious k mp3s, but danny weed and targets activity riddim is shockingly stiff and plodding.

newish terror danjah album on planet mu is alright. technically i cant fault it but i think i liked terror more before his big comeback. not like hes laurel resting or anything but i think i liked him before he expanded his palette, or before he started making more dubstep/electronica leaning tracks.

theres something a bit 'fake' about alot of what i hear on butterz. seems contrived. basically grime to appeal to the post dubstep/hoxton-ish (saying hoxton-ish sounds a bit dated in 2011, i know) crowd. i like that its fresh, giving grime producers a new platform, etc etc, and i keep wanting to buy doks chemical planet for example and the new swindle (which i think is good, just not enough for me to really want it badly) but it seems gimmicky. feel bad saying that tbh cos they seem like cool guys but i heard some of the butterz show the other night driving home and i ended up going for smooth fm instead lol.

reaction to that's been soooooo interesting

haha she made it onto WSHH!

kl0ppa kl0ppa down (tpp), Thursday, 14 April 2011 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

whaaaat

idk were people actually just not paying attention to lil kim and foxy brown for the past FIFTEEN YEARS

i get that it's something new in the UK scene - when i interviewed stush the other year i brought it up - and the reasons why would be really interesting to explore and interrogate

i think she's pretty good + it's def the "grimiest" thing i've heard in a while!

i get why for a british female mc who hasn't been rapping about group sex to see this get attention is upsetting tho.

kl0ppa kl0ppa down (tpp), Thursday, 14 April 2011 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

i'm amazed it hadn't happened sooner, and i guess og niki's kinda brave to do it? stush laughed it off when i asked her, basically said all the boys would laugh you off the stage and call you a slut - i guess that's the diff, stush et al came up in an era when live mc battles were the way you made your name, whereas now it's all about youtube. and chatting ho-rap lines on stage (in front of a 98% male audience) is a very different proposition to spitting them online.

(and i guess kim, foxy, trina et al made their name by what they laid down in the studio rather than live stuff?)

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

all the boys would laugh you off the stage and call you a slut

i think this is still most ppl's reaction anyway

kl0ppa kl0ppa down (tpp), Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

just instead of boos you have youtube comments

kl0ppa kl0ppa down (tpp), Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i meant to say something like "which has happened anyway" but youtube comments are way less intimidating than physical boos from a gang of men (and she pretty much had to expect them - but she's also got a lot of online support from some of the biggest names around thanks to that attention, which again wouldn't have applied if she'd just done this live at a rave)

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

idk how old lil kim, trina etc were when they started out? 17 seems young to throw yourself to the wolves but then this seems better than doing big brother or porn.

kl0ppa kl0ppa down (tpp), Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

i also love how nowadays i associate the birmingham accent with grime more than any london accent

kl0ppa kl0ppa down (tpp), Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

kim was 18 when she joined junior mafia, foxy was 17 when she released ill na na

(iirc in both cases)

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:18 (fifteen years ago)

the reaction from boys calling her a sket and a ho, and the weirdly moralistic outrage from people who think nothing of rapping about guns and violence (and of rapping about sex in p much the same way), reveals only that people like niki, kim and foxy are 100% necessary

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

one of the things why grime was/is still amazing is that it exposes the world to these voices + accents ppl don't usually get to hear. remember hearing 'i luv you' on my friends walkman at school at being like O_o how does he make the words sound like that?!?

kl0ppa kl0ppa down (tpp), Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

fucking hell the comments!

kl0ppa kl0ppa down (tpp), Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

the reaction from boys calling her a sket and a ho, and the weirdly moralistic outrage from people who think nothing of rapping about guns and violence

Guns, violence and often misogyny as well dude.

No way am I going to read Youtube comments about something like this.

Matt DC, Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

the comments are are more depraved than the song they are so outraged by which is no worse than the porn they jack off to twice a day

kl0ppa kl0ppa down (tpp), Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

those youtube comments do seem ott and a bit creepy.
