Raveonettes - "Pretty In Black"

I had their first EP and liked it well enough, but found it pretty easy to forget about and eventually sold it. I never heard Chain Gang of Love, but Pretty In Black makes me think I've missed out. I bought it on a whim, based on the recommendation of a friend who is prone to rep for the latest BRMC knockoff or downtempo-flavor-of-the-month, while somehow refusing to buy any music more than a couple of months old. So I was surprised at how much I loved this. It reminds me of a garage-rock Damon and Naomi crossed with Nancy and Lee. Really excellent.

That's a promising description. AllMusic.com weren't nearly as charitable.

I also liked the Whip it On e.p., but that's all I've heard. And that's all I think I'll need from them.

allmusic is on some kind of bad junk. This is fuckin great. I've gotta say, much better than Whip It On

I like the earlier stuff, but I'm impressed with the movement into, as you said, Nancy-and-Lee territory. "Somewhere in Texas" is a really good track.

chain gang of love is a huge step forward from whip it on. i think this band take a very limited scope and run with it in a very impressive manner.

I have Chain Gang of Love and like it a lot; but at the same time I felt it sounded so much like 15 deleted tracks from Barbed Wire Kisses that I didn't need to hear any more. Does the new record sound different?

the first half of this is pretty great

I have to say I love the song "Remember," even though it's a complete "Just Like Honey" ripoff.

Liked Whip It On and Chain Gang. Heard half of Pretty and got bored.

I find this record to be much better than anything else they have ever released.

I'm not really a fan of the first half... it really gets going around track 7 (though "Sleepwalking" and and "Seductstres of Bums" are great). "Here Comes Mary," "Red Tan," and "Twilight" is up there with the best 1-2-3's this year, so far.

it's ok. i liked the first 2 much more

they're kinda bloodless. i mean when they try to get 'sexy' it is pretty corny.
