Magma - suggestions

Many moons ago I had an album by these french prog rockers with the invented lingo for lyrics. I remember nothing other than I kept hold of it because of some dramatic groaning and drums and figured since it finally appears that virtually everything is now being released to CD it might be worth checking out again, alas I ain't a clue what it was called. Can anyone recommend stuff by them. Checking their site tells me nothing because I don't speak/read french.

Live: Hhai blue/black album cover with logo is probably the most 'classic' launching-off point. You also can't go wrong with Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh, Attahk or Wurdah Itah.

Their latest album, KA (released in late 2004) is an amazing work and actually might make an outstanding beginning point as well, especially because the production/sound quality is much improved relatvie to their earlier studio albums.

The Double live album mentioned upthread is epic. This disc is due for a 5.1 remaster IMHO. But this isn't a perfect world.

I need to get MDK. But Udu Wudu and Attahk rule.

for some reason, MDK isn't as bombastic as i've read it's supposed to be. it seems more loose & hippyish, almost dead-like? i don't get it? besides "De Futura" what's the most looped groove heavy album or song?

1001 Degrees Centigrades is also quite good. It's more fusiony and Soft Machine-esque than the later stuff though.

??? I don't hear much Dead/hippy/looseness in MDK at all. It's pretty tightly written, sounds like an opera (Carmina Burana) and has falsettos and bloodcurdling screaming (not very Jerry-like) on side 2. Therefore, bombastic. :)

After "De Futura", I would say some of the other stuff Jannick Top wrote in this period is similarly looped-groove (e.g., "Zombies" and other tracks from Udu Wudu or "La Musique des Spheres" from VanderTop Live). Other entries in the 'hypnotic repetition' category for Magma would be: "Om Zonka" from Inedits (a.k.a. "KA Part 3" from KA), "Theusz Hamtaahk" (various versions exist), and "Zess" from Bobino.

and again i say don't overlook jannick top's soleil d'ork album, with demos and heavy outtakes, plus the "utopia viva" ep (magma disco funk).
