It should be noted that I have only peripheral knowledge of dixieland, ragtime, creole, zydeco and other local features, but I would love to explore this more while I am here.
Finally, I NEED A JOB! Perhaps this is ILM abuse, but if any of you know of any record shops, galleries, bars etc (see above) in which I might pursue such avenues, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you!

The online version accidentally left off this introductory quote:
Well if you're going to New Orleans, you ought to go see the Mardi Gras/If you're going to New Orleans, you ought to go see the Mardi Gras/When you see the Mardi Gras, somebody'll tell you what's Carnival for

I also recommend reading Backbeat: Earl Palmer's Story, which is hilarious:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/030680980X/qid=1118531431/sr=8-3/ref=pd_ka_1/104-4894231-4877540?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
For starters, you could do worse than just wander around the Treme in the daytime talking to people. I don't know if Trombone Shorty's is still there, but I'm sure Kermit Ruffins holds down a weekly gig somewhere around there.

Also, Jim Russell's Rare Records, on Magazine St. (around the 2000 block, I think) has a lot of old jazz, blues, funk, and soul records, as well as some secondhand turntables and accessories.

Actually the whole C-Murder/C-Miller story is worth knowing. Who knows if he's guilty. I used to walk through the Miller family's old project, Calliope. That's where the Nevilles grew up, too.
