How many songs have slipped through the censors' net?

One of the funniest has to be the Kinks' Apeman: ...this air pollution is fogging up my eyes. Yeah, right...

Also, Play that funky music white boy... - is that lyric used every time in the song? Hahaha...

Lou Reed, natch -- "And she always kept her head/Even when she was giving it/She said hey boy..."

I heard Talking Head's "Sax and Violins" on the radio this morning. they cut out the "mom and pop they will ____ you up" but the whole end with the repeating part that sounds like "shuck that daddy up" was left in.

D-Mob's "Put Your Hands Together" featured a repeating sample of a bloke saying "fuck off" in the background. Another dance track around the same time had the same sample, but I forget what it was.

More precisely, Ned: "But she never lost her head/Even when she was givin' head." Hearing on the radio when I was ten or eleven years old, I simply could not believe my ears.

Did Prince's "Darling Nikki" chart without editing? Help me out here, somebody.

Ned, I had fake HTML tags that were supposed to alert the reader to turn the Lou Reed Geek Sensor Alert on and off at the pertinent moments. Greenspun evidently thought they were real tags and rendered them invisible. Anyhow, the correction above is meant to come with a grain of salt, and now this amendment is way too long.

I don't think Darling Nikki was a single, John, though I am often wrong about these things. Now that I think about it, were there any actual swears in that song? "grind" and "masturbate" and "funky" (at least the way Prince says it) are the dirtiest words I can remember.

Have you guys heard some censored hiphop where only the VOWELS are smoothed/soundeffected/bleeped out so it still basically sounds like the word? I'm thinking of "Forgot About Dre" specifically. "Fuck" becomes "f-eeoic-k", which is even cooler, and just as nasty!

I hate saying this, but Wet Wet Wet's single Temptation used to get played on the radio complete with the lyrics "Don't waste my fuckin' spirit".And you're right,Darling Nikki wasn't a single.

now this amendment is way too long

But I thank you for the effort and correction. And I caught the reference regardless. ;-)

And it wasn't. I think the order of the singles on Purple Rain was "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy," "Purple Rain," "I Would Die 4 U," "Take Me With U." My ninth grade year could be defined by the singles being all over the radio one after another -- brilliant.

We've overlooked an obvious one ... the Who's "Who Are You" ("awww, who the fuck are you?")

re "Play that Funky Music": apparently, I used to run the house as a little kid singing "play that fucking music" (prob. put up to it by my evil older sister).

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Beatles, "I Saw Her Standing There": "One two three FUCK!"

Colin Meeder, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not to mention the last verse of "Hey Jude" before the big finish, where Lennon drops his guitar and clearly exclaims, "Fucking hell!" (behind McCartney singing "then you can start . . .").

Terry Shannon, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Right at the fadeoff of Abba's "Summernight City" instead of "parking in the moonlight", it's "fucking in the moonlight"!! I was certainly shocked, I can tell you!!!
