i have to go for todd even though ive been a prince fan for longer. prince and todd have lots of similarities, prince is obviously a fan of todds (his song circle of amour sounds quite a bit like one of rundgren's soft-rock ballads, the horrid overtly loud electronic percussion aside), but todd seems to always get overlooked when it comes to pop auteur figures.

70s Todd versus nearly anyone would be a victory for Todd. I may yet have cause to regret saying that, and I've never heard Initiation, but Rundgren's Holy Trinity has kept plenty of other bands off my stereo this year.

Lovesexy owes an incredible debt to Todd...

I'm tempted to believe that the missing link between Hendrix and Prince is No. 1 Lowest Common Denominator from Todd's Todd album.

Interesting comparision because they aren't all that dissimilar. I choose Prince, but "Something/Anything" is a better album than anything Prince ever released during his 80s heyday.

two of my favorites, to be sure. i have to side with prince; hes been my favorite musician for almost as long as ive been very interested in music. rundgren is no slouch, though. a wizard, a true star is billions of light years ahead of its time.

another for Todd, who's sound is more palatble for this kid and seems to have a genuinely stronger decade under his rib.

..."The Beautiful Ones"...is a bit reminiscent of Todd Rundgren attempting Curtis Mayfield except that Prince really has the chops to pull it off. Definitely a wizard, a true star for the '80s.

A more appropriate matchup (in my opinion) than Prince/Neil Young. And one that'd be even more of a fun parlour-game if Prince had more obviously differentiated between solo and Revolution albums the way Todd did with Utopia. Personally, I agree with EVERYTHING Geir said above, but with a few disclaimers: 1. I'm missing huge portions of the Rundgren catalog - never heard anything after Initiation, 2. A lot of my appreciation of early Rundgren is rooted in his '70s-specific instrumental choices (Clavinets, Univibe, etc.), and 3. my REAL favourite Todd Rundgren works are still the first two Nazz albums.

(Awaiting "TS: 70s Stevie Wonder vs. 80s Prince")

I think Time / Vanity 6 / Apollonia 6 / Sheila E = Prince's Utopia
