Hunky Dory, glam, Orwellian dystopia and faux Philly soul vs funk-rock hybridisation, krautrock experimentalism, whole sides of instrumentals, Frippian guitar work...

I choose Bowie 70-73 and Bowie 76-80. (Strangely, Bowie 99-04 hasn't been too bad either). In spite of "Young Americans" being rather average, I still go for the latter half of the decade though.

I was never much for Bowie as a glam rocker manqué, my love for "Aladdin Sane" not withstanding; so, I'll take "Station To Station" thru "Scary Monsters" (overrated as that album is) in a pinch.

78-80 is obv the most amazing period. the glam rock period is much less imaginative.

1975/Philly soul belongs in the latter category — and then, yes, I'll take it.

76-80, no question about it. no artist had a better run than bowie; everything from station to station to scary monsters is untouchable.

Oh course the period with Low and Heroes wins, no contest. But 71-75 is still a great period (especially aladin sane/diamond dogs).

and by the way, scary monsters is SO not overrated. Bowie is never fuckin overrated.

Er, yes he is. As a summing up "Scary Monsters" is abstruse and sometimes just incoherent; and, God, the singing.....But, since I'm a fan, I accepted these faults a long time ago and regard the album as a near-great one.

Phish's best "David Bowie" was 12/29/94

Bowie is never fuckin overrated.

Around 1983, he was. His then recent material, that is.

The early seventies stuff is all good, and I have a special fondness for "Hunky Dory". But "Station To Station" to "Scary Monsters" is the best five-album run of anyone, ever.

as someone on ILM once answered to a "how do you choose what to play ?" type question with the answer .. 'depends on the weather',

the same thing applies with bowie.

tis all great and choosing over which is the best era is impossible as some moods require the Berlin period and some boxes of red wine require the Glam soundtrack. so in my house it's all regarded as totally great - bar the odd dip here and there, still haven't got around to getting Never Let you down' on cd - but i know i will succumb one day ..
