"Headhunters 2005" um uh WTF?

from today's nytimes...

The jam-band circuit started with bands modeled on the Grateful Dead, but it has embraced funk, and some of Bonnaroo's best music was built on deeply syncopated grooves. The keyboardist Herbie Hancock introduced Headhunters 2005, including John Mayer on bluesy guitar and the jazz musicians Roy Hargrove on trumpet and Kenny Garrett on saxophone. In songs from Mr. Hancock's 1970's Headhunters and new ones - including a suave, Stingesque song written by Mr. Mayer and Mr. Hancock - succinct grooves left room for daring harmonic excursions.

Maybe it's a typo and it's really John MayALL?

Haha. Is this the band that includes Mike Clark and Bill Summers or are they heading a separate Headhunters? 'Cause I know that group has been doing a lot of gigging on their own in New Orleans and whatnot, sans Herbie or pop stars.

that would rule out the suave and stingish, wouldn't it though?

I've heard that Mayer is actually an excellent guitar player.

And that he's gotten quite sick of his sensitive singer/songwriter shtick.

he just came to the pageant here in st louis, and i didn't go but i had many many friends who did and i got many really great reviews of it. apparently there was a group of screaming girls for john mayer, but the show was really focused around the jazz and funk rather than him (although he did sing one song). marcus miller is also on bass, which is quite amazing. and he isn't that bad of a guitarist.

twenty years pass...

Back in 1997 when I got Return of the Headhunters I played it once and dismissed it as too slick. I’ve thought about giving it to the charity shop several times.

Now I’ve discovered I appreciate it. The fusion cuts span a variety of moods from funky to spacy, and the R&B vocals and rap tracks are the sort of 90s I appreciate. Production sounds like a million bucks, very spacious. And I simply love listening to Bennie Maupin play.
