Know anything about these artists?

Bought the Rough Trade Shops 25 year Anniversary Box the other week, and there are 4 artists who I know nothing about - Gescom, Gak, Studio Pressure and I Am Kloot. Does anyone have any comments about them?

The box set is excellent, by the way, and the fact they can find room for some more obscure tracks alongside The Smiths, Cocteaus etc, is a good thing.

i am kloot are generally dire eccentric tune-mongerers from manchester, i think they may have an lp out, theres certainly some 7"s knocking about, they play around london alot. the rough trade box set is indeed a beautiful artifact, a real loving, thoughtful appraisal of their legacy. did anyone else attempt to go to the rough trade anniversery soirees? - total fiasco - every band that didn't cancel changed venue at least 3 times. in a devastating masterstroke the closing bash was in converted brewery & the temptation to go along & see if anyone succesfully got drunk was almost insurmountable. sorry, rambling with no discernable focus, but on a final rough trade tip, if anyone finds themselves kicking their heels around the smoke on saturday afternoons, rough trade have a weekly happening at the notting hill arts centre: its free, its diverse, & more often than not, it rocks.

I Am Kloot's lead singer used to call himself Johnny Dangerously and made two or three fine singles back in the late 1980s there, before disappearing. I don't like his I Am Kloot material anything like as much, although I do like his voice.

I went to watch The Sea And Cake and Pram at one of the RT shows, which was very fine, and the organisation seemed tolerable (even good, perhaps). I did enjoy the fun bag thing: for three pounds you received a fanzine with the history of RT, a tape of selected RT singles 78-81, a few postcards and a 7" single picked at random from the many boxes hanging around in the basement. Nice one. Shame about the Vic Godard / YMGs / Raincoats show fiasco, though.

Tim - what was the fiasco? I nearly went to that show.

vic godard pulled out, then young marble giants pulled out, followed promptly by the raincoats, leaving the butterflies of love playing in the bar of the sodding union chapel. but it was ok cos the tickets were slashed from 10 pounds to a bargain 8. cheek.

Gescom is Sean Booth and Rob Brown of Autechre and occasionally includes the guy who runs Skam records. It tends to be a lot thumpier and more rhythm-heavy than Autechre stuff, I think. They've released several EPs, mostly on Skam but also some on Clear and Warp, but I don't know of any albums or anything. I could be wrong, though; I'm no expert. I imagine there are a few Autechre completists around here who could tell you more.

Oh, and please don't tell my local second-hand record shop that it's an Autechre sideproject, as I've picked up a couple of Gescom 12"s for two quid or less each from there, and I'd imagine that if they'd known they were Ae-related they'd have slapped a much heftier pricetag on them...

Everything I know about I Am Kloot and more has already been said, and I don't know anything about the others; sorry. But I really should get this Rough Trade box set, I've heard a lot of very good things about it.

GAK was a sideproject by Richard D James aka Aphex Twin. It's pretty rare but I haven't heard it.

Anyone got the Gescom Minidisc?

Charlie Frame, Friday, 16 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Gescom MD is a nasty, jarring, dislocated mess. 40-odd named tracks, 88 index marks - barely anything hangs around long enough to be grasped. I think I like it.

Calling all purveyors of coruscating digital filth - more minidisc- only releases, please.

Studio Pressure = Photek. Geez, why can't these electronic artists pick a name and stick with it? ;)
