Will you be nostalgic for the compact disc one day?

I think I will not. I just did my first CD purchase in a few months (I've tried the iTunes music store instead for a while), and they just don't feel good in my hands. I hate how hard the plastic and sticker-protection thingies are to open. I hate the feel and action of the jewel-case. I don't like the aesthetic -- the size is unappealing, as is the silver bottom of the disc itself. Perhaps if all CDs came in cardboard paks I'd feel a little more kindly toward them.

Meanwhile, vinyl, which I only had until I was maybe 10 years old, just feels nice. I like the big cover art and the aesthetic of the record itself turning on the turntable. I'm not one of those vinyl-only people (I haven't even owned a record player for a few years), but I just don't think CDs will ever make me feel all warm inside the way records do (nor will cassettes.)

cassettes are pretty cool, i say.

re: nostalgia for CD format. it depeneds on what they are superceded by, i suppose. if it is a machine that grabs your dick and pumps the music through your urethtra then i'd probably be dreaming of the golden days of ye olde compact disc.

i hates how they crunch and crack when you step over them.

vinyl strewn over your bedroom floor looks so much better.

The brittle, easily broken CD jewel case is the worst packaging ever designed.

Cassettes are cool? How could a cassette possibly be cool? They sound terrible from the start, and the sound quality degrades the more you play them.

I guess the portability was ok.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Cassettes were the format that I listened to everything on in high school, so I guess they'll always have some nostalgia value for me - but as a format they kind of suck. Though mix tapes are still cooler than mix CDs.

Cassettes stink.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

I don't like the aesthetic -- the size is unappealing, as is the silver bottom of the disc itself.

I like how the underside of the discs in that bootleg Comsat Angels box set are black.

I got laughed at by a clerk for buying Manscape by Wire on cassette last year. Prolly justified.

i will probably be nostalgic for them, but then i end up nostalgic for everything with time.

I won't be in the sense that it makes moving a *lot* easier. Reducing my collection down thanks to the joys of ripping is one of the blessings of The Modern Day.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

very often i find myself staring at my wall of cds without any desire to play any of them... buying cds out. listening to music is out. viva ringtones !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

i like how CDs take up less space than records.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

That's one good thing. Especially when you put like 200 in one of those CD books.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

I think there's still a crypt of empty CD cases at my parents house from when I moved to college.

xpost -- Not like I've ever done that. *considers amount of mp3 CDRs and despairs*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

hasn't free downloading changed our relation to music ? i think in a way, it has less value to me now. a few years ago, i was ready to put quite a lot of money in cds, ultra rare bootlegs, etc.
nowadays, if i don't like a downloaded track on first listen (sometimes within the first 20 secs) i erase it (and chances are low i'll ever listen to it/buy it afterward).
the idea that ALL is THERE, somewhere make it harder to make it important to store it in any format.

bizarro gazzara, Sunday, 29 December 2013 22:18 (twelve years ago)

I think I have a nostalgia for CD-ROMs and old computer programs/videogames made to work on a CD or multiple CDs, but music.....nah.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 30 December 2013 00:41 (twelve years ago)

OP: No. I converted a 800 CD collection to 320 MP3s seven years ago. The collection filled a box that has followed my migrations, that has never been opened.

Disco Ebionite (Sanpaku), Monday, 30 December 2013 00:56 (twelve years ago)

How did you fit 800 CDs into only 320 mp3s

乒乓, Monday, 30 December 2013 01:07 (twelve years ago)

This mashup trend has really gone too far.

adam, I get that about CD-ROMS and games too. Weird...but I do like music CDs too, just not as much as vinyl. I don't think the CD will ever become retro-chic in the same way as LPs, they're just too utilitarian in appearance.
