Should I go see Devo live?

$80.

something about a tarantula coming out of a coconut (deangulberry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

I expected to answer with a resounding "Why not?!" until I opened the thread. $80 is steep for anyone, even Devo. I can't say I'd even be tempted at that price.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

I've never seen Devo and really want to ... but it's not Devo-Devo. It's fat old Devo. And it's at a House of Blues ... on Sunset Blvd. So, beyond the $80 (which isn't really the main factor here), the show is in a pretty undesireable location.

I 've just spent a $100 to see the Stones for the umpteenth time, so I feel like $80 might not be too unreasonable ... but, fuck.

something about a tarantula coming out of a coconut (deangulberry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

Uhm, I'd pay that. Having never seen them before, knowing it'll be a truly memorable show, House of Blues or no...plus with all the projects those guys have been working on, who knows what they'll do. And they're grownups, so one would hope they'd want to give you your moneys worth.

Then again, everyone else on here has probably seen them fiftybillionty-two times at acoustic performances in their living rooms when the band was all of 12 years old & performing under another name...so what do I know.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Yes I'm bitter.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm waiting for Alex to wake up and yell at me.

something about a tarantula coming out of a coconut (deangulberry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

I'd go if they were playing san francisco. I heard good things about a show they did two years ago.

It's Devo, you should go.

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

$80 is a lot. but it's devo! i defy anyone who's ever been to a devo show to tell me they've had anything less than a brilliant time.

metal detective (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

4-day pass for Bumbershoot in Seattle where Devo are headlining, amongst lots of other things.. $55.

What's this $80 shit? For one night? One band? That's obscene.

donut e-goo (donut), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

Granted, it's an odd lineup, but within the four days..

Devo - Ani DiFranco - Son Volt - Tift Merritt - Brazilian Girls - Flatstock - Digable Planets - STREB - The Decemberists - Ted Leo/Pharmacists - Poet Populist - DeVotchKa - The Gospel Hummingbirds - 1 Reel Film Festival - Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion - Ink Spot - Keren Ann - Sonny Landreth - Billy Preston - The Duke Robillard Band - Billy Joe Shaver - Mavis Staples - Vis à Vis Society

donut e-goo (donut), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

It's fat old Devo.

house of blues blows, but fat old devo sound exactly as good as skinny young devo. they're just great musicians and performers; they've never had anything else to coast on. it's not like they were ever sex symbols or anything.

metal detective (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

fuck four days... you can buy a one-day pass and just see devo!

metal detective (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

True! But I'm planning the four day thing.. why not? $18 is cheaper than $55 though... (though be forewarned, you do have to lineup the day of the show when the gates to Bumbershoot open and get a wrist-pass... the only price you pay for the cheapness of the ticket.. but as long as you show up when the gates open, you're fine.)

donut e-goo (donut), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

(if people could do that and still get to see Pixies last year, I'm sure it will be ok with Devo. As popular as Devo are, the push to see Pixies last year will seem far more intense in retrospect than the push to see Devo this year.)

donut e-goo (donut), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

You're hard pressed to find a bigger defender of theirs than m'self (well, there's Jody), but yeah ---- Eighty Bucks is entirely fucked up.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

what a bunch of bastards, 80 bucks. but i'd consider going if i had some spare 80 bucks somewhere (who hasn't, right?)

rizzx (rizzx), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I know. I was teasing a bit. Mostly, I was wondering if their age has caught up with them a bit. Maybe the Devo hats and jumpsuits don't look so good stretched out over bloated, old bodies? I primarily brought that up because it might be more of an indication of the crowd (especially on Sunset Blvd) that "fat old Devo" would draw. I'm imagining a crowd full of that Big Entertainment exec from the "Worried Man" video.

Jena (JenaP), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

There, you saw them, now take that money and go see Lightning Bolt... 10 times!!!

Jena (JenaP), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

I will say this in their defense: to this day, Devo do put on a helluva show. Sure, they're all old, fat and greying (as you will be too, one day), but they're tight as hell, hyperkinetic, and still put on a great spectacle. They can completely still deliver.

Still, $80.00? That seems strikingly opposed to their original aesthetic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Let's put it this way, I had such a good time at last summer's Devo show, that I was practically crying with joy (ask Jody and Elivs Telecom, who had the grave misfortune of standing next to me). Granted, I was also hecka-drunk, but still.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Despite my misgivings about the price tag and the venue they're playing here in NYC (the Hammerstein Ballroom -- which stinks), I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to end up trying to go to this. I mean, fuck, it's DEVO. They're among my very faves. I mean, hell, I fuckin' flew to London to see Killing Joke in February. By comparison, eighty bucks is pretty fuckin' cheap.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

There, you saw them, now take that money and go see Lightning Bolt... 10 times!!!

You missed the point. I can afford it. $80 is not a lot of money. I'm just wondering if it is worth it.

Perhaps you mean to hurl the Lightning Bolt joke at Jon? I like Devo much more than I like Lightning Bolt, $80 tickets or not.

This is true. I'm pretty sure that I'll go. Or else, I may choose to see Lightning Bolt one hundred times.

something about a tarantula coming out of a coconut (deangulberry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Lightning Bolt would have to pay me $80.00 before I'd sit through one of their shows.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

If you can afford the $80, then certainly do it, although for my standards that's unreasonably high, I've never been to a show that cost over $25. The picture above was from this past Sunday, where I got to see Devo at Midtown Music festival in Atlanta, but I got in for free. I got to see Lightning Bolt twice for a total of about $7 in the past year, and I know I'll go see them again whenever they're around. I also know they won't charge $80.

Jena (JenaP), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I also know they won't charge $80.

Give'em a few years.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Fat, old Lightning Bolt.

something about a tarantula coming out of a coconut (deangulberry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

or, if you can get a ride with a friend, see Devo in Seattle for $18. (granted, it's more than $80 by any means to get from LA to Seattle and back... but hey!)

donut e-goo (donut), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Is Lightning Bolt going to be there though?

something about a tarantula coming out of a coconut (deangulberry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Lighting Bloat

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Maybe they can tour with Misfats.

something about a tarantula coming out of a coconut (deangulberry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

i wonder how much of the $80 dan aykroyd is getting.

metal detective (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

as a relatively young devo fan (28) planning to go to both shows at the 9:30 Club in DC with a less-relatively young devo fan (22), i say they could charge 100 bucks even and we'd go. it's DEVO, goddamn you.
fat? yes. mark mothersbaugh said not long ago that the yellow suits made them look like cheeseburgers when they were young, and now they make them look like double cheeseburgers. old? yeah. i can't recall any amusing shit mark had to say about that, though. as long
as they can deliver, and the vast majority of reviews i've heard/seen
say they can and do, that's all that really matters. that and getting a piece of one of those yellow suits when they go airborne.

jenn benningfield (jenn), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

haha! that's ok, i like double cheeseburgers.

metal detective (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

i just ate mark mothersbaugh for lunch.

something about dan aykroyd coming out of a coconut (deangulberry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

i find it suprising that jenn benningfield would post in a "would you see devo thread" *kisskiss*

as she once said "I'd rather see fat old devo then over 90% of all other bands"

seeing them live at primavera aweek ago or so solidyfied my fandom. seriously brilliant.

They were astonishing at Primavera. Bob's boner was totally justified.

going.

S-, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 07:22 (seventeen years ago)

wtf @ that picture

the fact they're old actually improved the live experience - added to the weirdness for me anyhow.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

I saw them a year or two back. They were fantastic.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to their Brooklyn show -- which is similarly expensive.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 11:31 (seventeen years ago)

I think they're one band who are seriously worth the money.

I was just about to comment on the inappropriate hotness of Bob 1 until I looked further down. Best thing about the picture is clearly the other Bob's transfixed expression.

verhexen, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

Saw them on their last UK tour. Do it!

Soukesian, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

$93.40!!

Wow, a 25c discount for you guys. Probably bumps up to $115 or so with booking fees and transaction fees and postage fees (nb: in Australia they charge you the same extra fee for you picking up the tickets from the box office yourself, or for them posting them to you)

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 00:28 (seventeen years ago)

Went to the UK tour last year and wished I'd done more dates. Superb entertainment.

aldo, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 08:12 (seventeen years ago)

saw them at a festival last year and they blew pretty much all the other bands off the stage, so much fun.

They pulled the plug, and forcibly took the mic out of Booji Boy's hand at exactly 10 p.m. (denying Devo the opportunity for an encore). God forbid we ruffle the feathers of the dwellers of the newly erected space-age condos that surround the park.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 27 June 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

Herewith a needlessly lenghty extrapolation on same.

really looking forward to seeing the hardcore stuff at the wiltern tonight. who's seen them on this tour so far?

Van Spleef & R. Kellz (get bent), Sunday, 29 June 2014 18:12 (eleven years ago)

I saw the majority of the Oakland show (missed the first quarter). It was extremely fun and good. Hope they keep touring. Would have liked to hear Mongoloid, not sure why they aren't doing that since it was on the Hardcore comp. Wouldn't have killed me to hear Gates of Steel and Freedom of Choice too, but otherwise no complaints.

akm, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 03:40 (eleven years ago)

i overheard someone in line say that devo did "mongoloid" as a second encore at one of the shows.

Neil Patrick Haggerty (get bent), Wednesday, 2 July 2014 03:48 (eleven years ago)

damnit

no second encore in Oakland though people were begging for it.

akm, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 16:40 (eleven years ago)

anyone have a set list?

not sure why that doesn't have oakland on it. but according to those, they haven't done a second encore anywhere.

couldn't go see them in Denver, but this is kind of cool - will have to go check it out.

Devo co-founder Mark Mothersbaugh wanted to do something special in advance of “Myopia,” his first-ever gallery show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver on Oct. 31. Something that reflected his whimsical, bizarre, brilliant cultural contributions. Something musical.

“I bought this old disc-cutter from the ’40s that you could can cut (vinyl) 45s on, and I bought some old jukeboxes from the ’50s that I liked the look of because they weren’t the ones with the bubbles and the art deco stuff,” Mothersbaugh said last week from the lobby of the Grand Marriott in downtown Denver, just a few hours after Devo played Summit Music Hall.

“My thought was, ‘What if I cut discs where I record the content only onto that disc, and so they’re like one-shot, test-pressings on soft vinyl? It doesn’t matter what you get on the discs, let’s just record a bunch and see what happens.’”

Mothersbaugh quickly met his self-imposed challenge with dozens of discs featuring private Devo rehearsals, unreleased bits of music from his scoring for Wes Anderson films, stream-of-consciousness prose, one-off songs and more.

He filled the custom jukebox with 120 tracks — or 60 different 45-RPM vinyl singles with two songs per disc — and shipped it to Denver so it could debut shortly before Devo’s June 23 Summit show (part of the band’s “Hardcore ’74-’77″ tour).

The jukebox, a restored, 1950s-era AMI Multi-Horn High Fidelity machine, was installed a little over a week ago at hip LoHi bar Forest Room 5, and will move around to different area watering holes at regular intervals.

tylerw, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 19:08 (eleven years ago)

denver gets all the good stuff

Neil Patrick Haggerty (get bent), Wednesday, 2 July 2014 19:15 (eleven years ago)

ha i dunno about that, but this is pretty neat.

tylerw, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 19:17 (eleven years ago)

the last time I almost saw Devo was like 25 years ago, they played Chrissy Field in SF for an EArth Day thing, but couldn't actually play on stage because it started raining. So they just stood there for a bit and then left. Really glad I finally got to see them after skipping several of their shows over the past few years. This set was really powerful, zero kitsch. Hope they keep going.

akm, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 20:36 (eleven years ago)
