strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

My memories were correct: the 1993 list is much superior to the ' 89.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I was more of a Casey Kasem man in the early to mid-80s myself. Then after that I just relied on the newspaper.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Shadoe Stevens was the "official" spokesman for Billboard in the late '80s to early '90s. Kasem's were "inaccurate."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

That doesn't explain those lists, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

There are some horrible records in both of them (Spin Doctors vs. Chicago??). I hope the UK ones would be better but suspect not.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

it's a strange coincidence for sure that the janet jackson songs are the best (only decent?) things in each top 10.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

89 > 93. Overlooking the high-ranking white-boy balladry on the '89 list ("Right Here Waiting", "Look Fucking Away", and so on), there are some great songs there -- many more great songs than the comparatively more consistent but blander list from 1993.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

> 53: ARMEGEDDON IT - RICHARD MARX

Whoopsie!

> 1: LOOK AWAY - CHICAGO
> WTF?

"Look Away" held the #1 slot for four weeks, which was enough to be #1 for the year in a year of rapid chart turnover.

FWIW, I far prefer the 1989 set to the 1993 one; I fell out of touch with Top 40 radio while I was in college. But there's no way that 1993 countdown culls from Billboard chart data: "I Will Always Love You" was #1 for 14 weeks, and even though "Two Princes" got massive airplay, it couldn't have done THAT well -- could it?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

"That doesn't explain those lists, though."

Billboard compiled those lists based on airplay and single sales. Those lists pretty much jibe with what I remember were the inescapable hits.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

This could mutate into a guilty pleasures thread....
One from each top 10.

I liked this

9: BABY I LOVE YOUR WAY/FREEBIRD MEDLEY - WILL TO POWER

and this

7: ALL THAT SHE WANTS - ACE OF BASE

eek.

And I still do, but I'd never admit to it in public.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

If we put together an ILM panel we'd probably agree that there as many great songs on BOTH lists as they are duds.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

i am amazed by how many of these songs i don't remember AT ALL.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Best song from either list: Gin Blossoms Hey Jealousy

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Joseph's right: "Two Princes" only peaked at #7 on the Hot 100.

Meanwhile, "Informer" was #1 for SEVEN weeks -- only "I Will Always Love You," "Dreamlover," "I Can't Help Falling in Love," and "That's the Way Love Goes" were at the top for as long or longer -- but scrapes in on this list at #73? Weird.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Not to be all DJ Martian, but here's alternate Top 100 for both years (this site definitely doesn't use Billboard data -- it's culled from something called ARC Weekly):

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

WILL TO POWER! OMFG!

Also - Strongo hates ballads! And "DREAMLOVER"!!! You probably hate Amy Grant, too! LAME!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

My guilty pleasure: 38 Special, "Second Chance"

Song I'd like to hear again, haven't heard since it was on the charts: Bobby Brown, "On Our Own"

Song I've never even heard of: Lisa Keith, "Better Than You"

Favorites: "Hey Jealousy," "Morning Papers," "Another Sad Love Song"

Song that most defined each year for me: "If You Don't Know Me By Now," "Sleeping Satellite"

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Seward to thread so we can reminisce about the Mad TV skits w/ Will Sasso & Alex Borstein as a poncey out-of-whack husband / wife pop duo that was, for all intents & purposes, WILL TO POWER!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

the 1989 list reminds me of middle school, so I love it! I think... At the least, it reminds me that I really need to locate a copy of the Donny Osmond "Soldier of Love" single. I forgot that song even existed, but it's great.

The 1993 list reminds me of nothing. So no opinion really. It does seem to have more generic balladry, which is a turn-off. The 1989 list looks more dance-y and glam-y.

Kip, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Is "Sleeping Satellite" the one that goes, "I blame you for the moonlight sky" (or something)?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I know about 95% of the 89 list but only about 75% of the 93 list.

I guess that's when I discovered "real" music, heh.

Viz (Viz), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

It's obvious Shadoe got drunk before the show and just played some records in whatever order he picked them up off the floor.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Alfred.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

I kinda miss Casey Kasem, he represented a pivotal period in my music development. He still does AT20 and AT10, but I can't find the broadcasts anywhere.

About a year ago.. I DID hear Casey doing one of his last AT40 broadcasts and I gotta say it was a hoot hearing him talking about 50 Cent and Missy Elliot.. then stepping into the Peter Cetara track as the inevitable long distance dedication.

"KEEP YOUR FEET ON THE GROUND BUT KEEP REACHING FOR THE STARS"

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

i can't decide if his name being spelled "shadoe" makes me like him more or less.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

I dig the fact that Love And Rocket's "So Alive" charted one spot higher than the New Kids On The Block's "The Right Stuff" in the 1989 list.

Marshall Stax (Marshall Stax), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

and "So Alive" hit the Top 5 a few weeks before The Cure peaked at number two with "Love Song." An interesting time, no doubt.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

I've been debating getting up early on Sunday so I can find out if Shadoe is forced to play "Wait" on his show.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Fun fact: Shadoe Stevens is married to Donna Summer.

Patrick (Patrick), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Back when I used to listen to AT40, they used to just skip over "Me So Horny" entirely! They'd go right from #33 to #31 without saying a thing about 32!

Patrick (Patrick), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

"Fun fact: Shadoe Stevens is married to Donna Summer."

And I'm married to John Taylor.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Also, "The Humpty Dance" would fade out after the first chorus. Too bad I had stopped paying attention by the time "Mind Playin' Tricks On Me" hit the top 40.

Patrick (Patrick), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

> Fun fact: Shadoe Stevens is married to Donna Summer.

She's not still married to the guy from Brooklyn Dreams who sang on "Heaven Knows"?
